My understanding is that it was similar to what Wayne Gretzky experienced when Marty McSorley came aboard with the Edmonton Oilers. While some teammates put the Great One on a pedestal, Marty had no problem poking fun at Wayne just as he would every other teammate.
Suppoedly Gretzky loved being one of the guys, just as as Crosby enjoys the relationship he has with Guerin. Guerin is the hockey equivalent of a staff sergeant. At this stage of his career, Guerin has been through every possible dressing room drama and he can be a very valuable asset to Crosby going forward. forward. Although Crosby has an impressive hockey resume, including a Stanley Cup, he is still young enough that he can benefit from Guerin's presence.
Guerin is a player who has only spent a few months in Pittsburgh, but knows the name of every Mellon Arena security guard. I've knwn Guerin for almost 20 years and what I've noted about him is that he always treats people with respect. Teammates listen when he talks, and he's someone who can counsel a young captain without undermining his captain's ability to lead.

People talk about intangibles, leadership, etc. and how they’re so valuable. But the NHL reality is, most of your signings have to be based upon performance. I don’t think Billy G falls into the “most” category. His performance was nothing to shirk at, but his intangibles make him immensely valuable.
It’s a huge coup if he stays. I would love to see him back in a Pens sweater. And he’s not that old: he’s almost a decade younger than Chelios. Oh wait…that’s still pretty old.
