Am I a hypocrite?
I recently posted a blog on my NHL Connect page about the Crosby/Ovechkin debate, and, being a fan of Sid,naturally,I was saying what I liked about him,and not criticizing OV,per se,but using a variation of his last name that I came up with, and referred to him as "Alex the not-so-great". I also included a chewing-out I gave 2 of my friends via Facebook during I believe, game 5 or 6....I don't remeber...anyway,these friends had started in on the Crosby bashing, and at one point,I finally told them to shut the f*** up,and that "all you little Red Wings fans need to come down off your f***ing pedestals, back down to Earth, and get over the diving, whining, and homophobia"---it's like, yes,Sid's a good looking guy,but just because you never hear of him going out every night, passing himself around to every girl in town, and having a piece of ass in every town he goes to,does not make him gay. People who have commented have pretty much called me a hypocrite for praising Sid,and bashing Alex Ovechkin....The way I see it,everyone else does it,so why can't I? I personally know people who practically worship AO,and detest Sid(the aforementioned friends, and some of their friends who have been brought into the group),and they have,on more than one occasion,in my presence, said something awful about Sid in one breath, and then said something praising OV in the next. So I have to ask.....does this make me a hypocrite?

Nah, it makes you a fan. This is supposed to be a fun diversion—don’t let it stress you. If it stops being fun, move on.
Anyway, what does it matter who an NHL player dances with, really, so long as he occasionally dances with Lord Stanley? I’m okay with criticisms of Crosby’s sportsmanship, and even his gameplay. But if non-fans have to resort to making up crap that doesn’t even matter to the game or the team, he’s doing just fine.

hypocrite?
Wrong word. It makes you less than you can be. Your friends need to change and so do you, but somebody has to be first to change. Being a fan is no excuse for being rude!

Yes and no
As a Caps fan I have seen the unreasonable Crosby bashing and I understand your frustration, particularly when the criticisms are plebeian and sophomoric, and the subject is so good. But as an habitual reader of hockey blogs I have seen the hypocrisy of Pens fans who bash Ovie and complain about about the Crosby bashing.
The argument that “every one else is doing it so why can’t I” is ridiculous if you will pardon my candor. Either you understand why it is wrong or you don’t, and if you do there is no excuse for doing it.
Crosby and Ovechkin are two different players with two different styles, and both are the best at what those individual approaches to the game. I can’t imagine anyone who loves hockey not being a fan of both of them, EXCEPT when either plays a favorite team. Hockey rules apply and those rule stipulate that when a great player plays YOUR team that player is worthless. Under those circumstances you can pull out any invective, regardless of its credibility.
So bashing Ovie or Crosby as a general rule is just hockey stupid. Bashing them when they are playing your team just makes good hockey sense.
