What about Scuderi?
Rob Scuderi was a huge contributor to the Pens winning the Cup. Not only did he cover his responsibilities amazingly well and was solid shift after shift against superstar opponents, he also covered for all of Hal "flat-foot" Gill's sluggishness and constant mistakes plus he saved goals. Sure, Billy G. and Adams are great to have back, but the key ingredient who has to be re-signed before anyone else is Rob Scuderi. In order to beat the opponent, you need a wall around Fleury. Scuderi is as solid a blue liner as any and if the Pens don't sign him, forget about another cup. Give him 3 mil before someone else does. Go Pens!

Scuderi wants to test free agency and see what offers are out there for him. Which you really can’t blame, he’s worked his way from a 5th round pick and served a lot of years in the minors…He’s on the verge of becoming a multi-millionare one way or another, so he deserves the chance to see his open market value.
He said once he gets the offers in, he’ll go back to the Pens and ask them how close they can come. Hopefully Scuderi will feel the most comfortable with Pittsburgh’s offer, but I guess it all depends how wild the other GM’s are feeling tomorrow.

Give him 3 mil before someone else does.
There really isn’t a lot of room to give him that kind of money and not think twice. There are other spots to fill on the roster and there is something like $5mil left.
If he takes a $2mil offer then he is probably a steal, much more than that and it will be tough for us to keep him without sacrificing some other vital parts of the team.
I want to see him back but I don’t think he will be.

I agree. Scuds’ way of handling it, as in giving Pitt the last chance to top his best offer, is admirable but I don’t see how he’ll offer anything less than 3 mil. The Pens can’t offer that. At that point the only thing in Pitt’s corner is that he may…MAY…consider a discount to return to the Cup-winning team. But for a guy who makes his living blocking shots it’s definitely a dangerous investment to not take a long-term deal if offered.

I think most importantly is that he wants a long term deal, and we’ll have to see if anyone else offers him long enough and high enough of a contract to make him break away from Pitt.

Catch-22
While Scuderi contributed heavily to the Cup Win and performed brilliantly throughout the Playoffs I fear he’ll probably wind up like Ryan Malone. Malone was a big contibutor to the Pens run to the Finals in ‘08 but once he hit Free Agency he got a ridiculous offer from Tampa he couldn’t pass up. I’m afraid that his exposure in the Playoffs and his solid play will generate equally unmatchable offers from elsewhere. I will be surprised if someone doesn’t throw something in the range of 5yr/18M, which is about $1M or so too much for the Penguins…

I agree, Dutch.
Even then, no offense to Scuderi but in five years he’ll be 35 years old….Shot blocking defensive defensemen unfortunately break down around that age and at $3+ million he aint gonna be a bargain in the latter years of his contract.
I too get that feeling I got with Malone when it comes to Scuderi this year…..That he will be getting big offers elsewhere and the Pens needing to move on for the sake of their salary structure.

I disagree that it’s a catch-22; maybe a win-win actually.
If they’re able to re-sign Scuderi, win.
If not, they’ll have more money to spread around to their other needs. They can spend a little more on a winger for Malkin and/or get a semi-seasoned backup for MAF and let Curry develop comfortably. Which could also be considered a win.
I’ve all but considered Scuds gone though. They are way too many wacky GMs out there and one of them is sure to have a bad defense core and say, “Did you see him blocking shots last Cup Finals? He must be worth 4, 5m/yr…what’s that? Another team is rumored to be talking to him?! 6m/yr…for 7 years!” Oh, well.
Heart, Max Talbot has it by the mile. The Pens are your 2008-2009 Stanley Cup Champions.

Godard/Rupp/Dupuis
With the signing of Rupp, it looks like the pens are trying to free up cap space. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them drop Godard and Dupuis somewhere for cheap so they can offer Scuderi a little more than they could before.
I agree with Malsby, and the possibility of freeing up ~2.1million before we have to offer a contract to Scuderi makes both situations better.

For so for the Penguins than for almost every other team in the league
Even in other sports, you can trust Mario o do the right thing for this team. With or without Scuds (preferably with), we’ll survive.

Farewell Scuds..
I am a bit disappointed to see Scuderi leave. The upsides are that he didn’t go to a conference rival and that the Pens have a chance to reinvest that money in a setup man for Crosby and/or Malkin. Ray and Mario need to dump Godard and Dupuis for sure. As we all saw, the Wings shut down Sid completely and Malkin was the setup guy for Max and others instead of the other way around. Any suggestions? Nothing but class from Scuderi and I hope the best for him, but not for the Kings.

I'm kinda curious what's Shero gonna do with the cap space
With about 2.8 million to burn on a top 6 defender and a backup goalie, I think we’re in good shape. Especially now that Feds has signed with us. Do you think we can pick up Jay McKee. He’s injury prone but a very solid stay at home if we can keep his contract reasonable. I’d like him next to Goligoski or Letang on the 3rd pair.
