Pittsburgh Penguins will not re-sign Mike Zigomanis
News of the recent re-signing of Craig Adams had more than a few Pensburghers assuming that Mike Zigomanis was a goner. Turns out we were right. Dave Molinari of the Post-Gazette confirmed such today:
Zigomanis' agent, Kurt Overhardt, said this afternoon that "I think it's a fait accompli" that he will not have any additional discussions with the Penguins about them retaining his client.
In the grand scheme of things it doesn't hurt the Pens all that much. While it may be hard to find a fourth-line center with Ziggy's faceoff skills, it's just as easy to promote from within via Wilkes-Barre Scranton or find a more durable and consistent fourth liner on the free agent wire.

Faceoffs: Zigomanis > Adams
Everything else: Adams > Zigomanis

Exactly. For utility guys you gotta be as well rounded as possible. Ziggy may be good but Adams wins in the end.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
You might also want to add that the Pens’ centers (Crosby, Staal, Malkin) improved their faceoff percentage since last season when Ziggy was picked up, and there’s less of a need for a faceoff specialist. Not to say that one wouldn’t hurt, but the Pens are no longer last in the league in faceoffs.

Agreed, gorgy….Every year Crosby and Staal are getting significantly better in faceoffs and Malkin’s improving too.
Zigomanis is good at faceoffs, but as I’ve said before, within five years Crosby will be a top 5-10 guy in the league in faceoffs, thus diminishing what you need Z for in the first place.

Happy trails, Ziggy. Best of luck in your next city.
As an aside, is it just me, or does the name Kurt Overhardt sound much more suited to a death metal guitarist than a sports agent?
P is for Latrobe.
I found it weird he used the expression “fait accompli”….Don’t hear that every day when talking about hockey contract negotiations.

Can't keep em all
Shame to lose a guy who won 5 of 8 Faceoffs, but ultimately have to make your choices. Good luck to Ziggy elsewhere I’m sure he’ll wind up on another NHL roster very soon.
Who really cares about Z, the guy has been injured his entire time with the pens. Later, they did it without you.
why so hostile?
I was hopping they would re-sign him, but it’s Shero’s choice, not mine and not Zigomanis’. No need to cut the guy up
