STEELERS VS. PENGUINS
I have grown up in burbs of the burgh, and never have I seen such a closer bond than this team has made with everyone in western PA, and all over the world.
I am also a huge Steeler fan. When the 2008-2009 Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII, and a NFL record 6 Super Bowls, it was a big deal. It was estimated that 350,000 people made it to the Steelers victory parade downtown in the cold of February. The Steelers are without a doubt the heart of the City of Pittsburgh. But I feel that a strong shift has been made on the side of the young and upcoming Penguins.
The victory parade for the Pens was estimated to have about 375,000 people. You can make an argument that the cold had something to do with it, but I don’t think it did. The Steelers had done something that has never been done before. Win a NFL record 6 Super Bowls. How could the Penguins turn out 25,000 more fans?
It's simple, you love these guys because the emotion that they bring to the ice every night for our viewing pleasure. They are good boys who dont beat their kids or wives, or get caght with a fat sack of weed near the Mellon. They are a group of mostly young, talented, superstars, which are great role models and leaders for our next generation of hockey fans and young men. Sidney Crosby is the best role model of all.
It’s funny because I visited an "old folk’s home" during the second round of the cup finals, and everyone there was into it. They were watching game 7 between the Rangers, and the Capitals. They were talking about how great it would be if Crosby, Malkin, and that "caveman" Ovechkin met in a series. That just goes to show how these players have impacted the area. Hockey in Pittsburgh is mostly a younger people sport.
The old people in Pittsburgh usually only care about the Steelers, and their great teams of the past. The 2009 Penguins Hockey Team has changed all of that.
That reminds me of a joke….Did you hear about the new drink they are making at Starbucks in honor of the great Marian Hossa? Yeah…It comes without a cup…………. Sorry Hossa, maybe next year.
Let me know what you think….I accept all forms of feedback

Wow, votes are 9-0 for the No’s right now. Haha
Personally I think Hossa takes the money in a long-term contract in some far away hockey out-post like LA or Edmonton and is seldom heard from again….Not that either of those teams can’t make a deep run, but it’s hard to get to the Finals.
Even harder as Hossa’s finding out to win it.

I agree 100%...
….with your post. I used to be a Steeler fan (and a fan of the NFL in general). Now I borderline despise the NFL because of the lack of values and the overall criminal activity of many players.
I have turned my focus to the NHL because of young stars like Crosby. These guys love the game and would play for free. The turning point for me was the Winter Classic vs. Buffalo when the weather was awful and tough on the players. However, every player said it was great and they would do it again in a second.
WE ARE.......PENN STATE!

My wife was at the Pens parade, because her work let employees take their lunch to coincide with the parade, didn’t do that for the Steelers.
I don’t think the Pens will overtake the Steelers, unless a lockout occurs. They definately are ahead of the Pirates, and it’s a tribute to the Pens that this discussion topic could ever happen.

Agreed. It is good to see that Hockey has a very solid base in the city. Hard to believe it was only a couple of years ago that the team was on the brink of leaving town. Nice being an elite franchise in both performance on the ice and support off of it.

ray shero
I believe if the pirates are going to join the ranks of the steelers and the pens, they need a ray shero type of g.m.hey maybe Ray, can help the pirates out, like by telling them to quit trading off good ballers….i mean who is next to go….

School
One of the biggest reasons the Pens turned out more fans is that school was out. And, yes, I think the weather had a lot to do with it.
When you see guys wearing Penguins Jerseys to Steelers games, then we can talk… right now, the Steelers are still number one in Pittsburgh.
I’m just glad I don’t have to choose!
