Marian Hossa to the Hawks
Marian Hossa has once again jumped ship and just signed a 12-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks. It has been reported that the deal is worth $5.5M a year. Kudos to the Hawks for pulling this deal off. Hossa should fit in well with the Hawk's young talent, and transforms the team from a middle-of-the-pack Western conference team into an instant contender. But as most Penguins fans will tell you, the Hawks will have to overcome a lot with Hossa on their roster to raise the Cup and have their names engraved on Lord Stanley's jewels. No team in the history of the NHL has won a Stanley Cup while Hossa has been on their roster. What most teams realize...

I'm actually kinda scared of the blackhawks
They’ve got a good young blue-line tandem in Keith and Seabrook and some really great offensive talent. Now if they kept Khalibuddin…

haha I love massacring Khabibulin’s name. I often go for, “Khabqjkyegheulin.”

Hey they still have Christina Huet…but Toes is almost ready for a new contract so they are gonna have some cap crap hitting the fan like us soon if they keep it up.

i have a question
let me preface this by saying: 1) i don’t know a lot about NHL contracts. so i’m assuming since everyone is talking about trading players to get rid of their contracts instead of mentioning cutting them, that contracts for players will count against the cap if the team cuts the player so the only way out is to trade them. not to mention, restructuring contracts doesnt seem to be permitted.
2) i realize hossa’s contract AVERAGES 5mil a year, so it may not be worth that much at the end.
so although this may be a great deal for chicago right now, but having 5mil of your cap taken up by 42 year old player doesnt seem like such a good deal. granted, maybe chicago will look to deal him 5 years from now, but teams will have to look on that as a negative when considering a trade because they know they’ll probably be looking to deal him in a couple years also

The short answer to your question is that most of his contract is guaranteed money. So “cutting” a player like they can in the NFL isn’t an option. But yes, the cap hit for Hossa’s deal should only be around $5.2M, even if he’ll make close to $8M for the first 7 years of the deal.

The grey area that I’m not too knowledgeable about is the cap hit when a contract is bought out. I understand that there are different rules for contracts signed when a player is under 35, as opposed to over 35. The reason for long contracts is to minimize cap hit by adding additional years on, but catastrophic injuries happen, as do player retirements before contracts end. If Zetterberg is 36 and blows out a knee, he’ll still have 5-6 years left on his contract and Detroit will still owe him the remainder of his contract (all NHL contracts are guaranteed, unlike the NFL). However, Detroit could still buy Zetterberg out. If that happened, does his annual cap hit come off the books, too? Any cap experts here?

All I know, as a semi-Hawk fan, is that Mr. Havlat is apologetically pissed off with the Blackhawks for not re-signing him. He really wanted to be back, and they chose Hossa instead.
Bad PR.

Well, I think Hossa is a better player than Havlat, and he doesn’t come with the scary injury history either. I thought Minnesota was crazy to give a 6-year deal to a player like Havlat; he’s one of those guys, like Gaborik, where you always expect the next hit to put him out of the lineup for two months.

Just saying Mr. Havlat’s twitter page, from what I’ve read from Second City Hockey, isn’t very pretty. Sounds like a break down in communication sufficed, and now they have the Panda man.
I’ll say this much, Toews is going to be scary to watch next year. Should be a fun team to watch.

Havlat v. Hossa
Based on past performance, health issues anyway, Maid Marian was a better pickup than keeping Havlat. I’m sure Chicago hated getting rid of him, but with the Cap issues what they are they didn’t have a lot of choice. Their issues are going to really come to a head if they can’t dump Brian Campbell’s huge contract soon, they won’t have the space to keep a Goalie (Huet way overpaid) at $5.5M, Campbell at near $8M, Maid Marian $5.2, Towes, Keith and Kane all going to be looking in the $4M+ range. PRoblem for Chicago is its very difficult to dump big $$$ long term deals, look at Philly and Dany Briere….Look at the Rangers and Wade Redden. Be interesting to see.
