Behold, the Penguins' 2009/10 schedule
It's an exciting offseason day when you can wait for the 2009/10 season schedule to drop. But finally it is here, and over the next day or so I'm sure we'll talk it into the ground with ridiculous over-critical analysis. Or something like that.
Yesterday the Net was abuzz with a rumor that Pitt would open the season against the Islanders. As it turns out, the Penguins actual open the season up against the Rangers at home on Oct 2. First game of the season at home. Stupendous. And against a division rival no less. Perhaps the rumor was a bit misguided for Pens fans, because the Islanders actually open their season against the Pens. So it's going to be #1 team against #1 pick on October 3.
Quick glance at the schedule shows the Pens have 14 separate occasions in which they play back-to-back games, two of which come within the first week of the season.
Full schedule after the jump. See what you like/don't like and let's chat it up.

It looks a lot similiar to last season; West coast swing in early November. I remember dates for some reason and know I went and saw the Pens play in Atlanta on November 20th, this year they play in ATL again on Nov 21. And another long home-stand towards the end of the season.
Also 6 of the last 7 games are against teams that didn’t make the 2009 playoffs, so it seems like the Pens might benefit from playing some weaker teams (NYI, ATL, TB, TOR) at the end of the year. Of course that’s what we expect now before things begin.

I was thinking the same thing Hooks. Looks (on paper of course) like we could challenge for the conference with a strong finish. And we may need a few easy games to en d the season after the 6 games in a row against 2008 playoff teams (3/17 til 3/27). And I am loving the home and home with the Flyers in mid-December. I may have to take some time off for a mid-week road trip!
Would you recommend Pens fans go to Atlanta to see the Pens? I’m thinking about going in April since It’s not going to be easy or cheap to get Pens-Caps tickets in these parts.
I may actually go to the second to last game of the year in Atlanta too. A friend of mine is a Thrashers fan and is interested in heading down there a few times this year.

As I said, I went last year once and will go again this year (my sister lives in SC, on the way).
It’s a great place to watch a hockey game. The people are pretty friendly, there’s a good contingent of Pens fans in the crowd (which will probably expand this year since they won the Cup) and it’s not like the arena is packed or anything.
But the traffic in Atlanta absolutely sucks. And this coming from a guy that deals with Washington DC traffic on a daily basis.

Yeah last year they opened up against the Devils, this year Rangers. The Coyotes game kinda seems a bit out of place in the first month, but whatevs. I’m just over-analyzing things.

How bout March 20-27 we play the hurricanes, red wings, capitals, flyers. All 4 teams we beat in the playoffs.
I was just about to point out the March schedule. Always seems to be a rough month for the pens
Bruins x2
Devils x2 (Both road)
Hurricans x2
Lightning x2 (maybe not that hard)
@ Wings and @ Caps in 3 days, followed by Flyers
5 game road streak (albeit all east coast, but still)
As an aside, does anyone know the rules for NBC game of the week? Are all Sunday games scheduled for 3 PM and NBC picks one each week to be broadcast at 12:20?

No prob, if you’re not thinking about it, it’s odd I know.

1) yea that’s rather odd place for the phoenix game
2)At least we don’t play philly and wash back-to-back three times again, rather teams like tampa & fla
3) nice homestand at the end
4)What’s with home & home with Minnesota? Reunion w/ Chuck Fletcher?, would have rather it been with Chicago—they could’ve had a comparison field day
5) Ok, enough with Detroit!!!—but I guess would we rather have a home or an away game? Not sure so I guess one of each is fair.
6) At
7) What’s with the geographic yo-yo road trip at the end of the season? Car, NJ, TB, NJ, Bos? At least the other road trip is geographically sequential
8)What’s with the Islanders and legal-holiday matinees?
9) Sunday 5pm w/ Tampa & Toronto? Is this something new?
I think that’s all for now
8)What’s with the Islanders and legal-holiday matinees?
I don’t know why, but they always seem to host those afternoon games…Maybe they draw better crowds or have a lot of kids at the games then? I’m not sure the history behind it, but they’ve done it for a while that way on Long Island.

It seems to me
Like the Penguins are involved in every one of these games! And they play half of them at home! It must be more Bettman loving Crosby. If Crosby’s so amazing he should have to play every game on the road, by himself. I’m so sick of the NHL shoving Crosby down our throats all the time by giving the Penguins 82 games, god.

@ thecheeseisblue: Hahahahaha!!!!!
I have a couple stupid questions for everyone—when can we start buying tickets? And do we have to “borrow” a Pittsburgh zip code or area code in order to get home game tickets?
I’m happy about the Islanders’ opener, because the Pens will be in my backyard! Early! Some of my friends and I are probably going. Might be in nosebleed seats, but we’ll so be there.

I never really know actually. If I remember from last season it was sometime in August, but don’t hold me to it. I bought home opener tix two years ago and hardly remember when I actually bought them. But I do know you better have the phone going and the ticketmaster.com feed because it was sold out in 8 minutes.

Thank you! We want those Isles season opener tickets, and I know I won’t have to worry about their only selling to people in the right areas in that case. It looks like it’ll be an eight-some, too. I’ve already set e-mail alerts. Hope they work.
Will December tickets go on sale at the same time as the season opener, do you think? (Anyone else is more than free to jump in here.)

I think any tix for any game go on sale on the same day. The box office always leaves a few aside for game night but your best bet is to buy them in advance. I’ve been wanting to make it out to Nassau before the place is torn down. Maybe this season will be it.

I’m thinking we better get in while it’s still the bargain NYC-area hockey venue and team. (“Bargain,” of course, being a relative term.)

Not crazy about the playing the hated flyers in philly the day after a game with the Yotes. Makes that first game seem like a trap game. Oh well, there`s 82 on the schedule. Probably see if I can get to one of the S.Cal games this year. Worried about that March stretch, that`s brutal, I guess the preparation for the Playoffs. See how the Penguins weather that gauntlet.
feb
glad we only have a few games in feb, i would love nothing more then to abolish the month of feb. we are awefull then

Isn’t that what the Daytona 500* is for? ;-) Hope the guys are better separately in the Olympics, anyway.

I swear the pens play the islanders at the end of the season every year…. I like the schedule though. It’s pretty fair

even after winning the cup, people still have to comment about the kid, grow up. im willing to bet that there isent a team or a fan that wouldnt love to have him on there team.
do people even relize what he does off the ice? i believe people only see sid as a player, not as a person off the ice. maybe someone will get a list of GREAT things he does for his community/city. and all the kids he helps. Im sick of hearing about how bad of person he is….
If at any point you think the Pens have some schedule impediments...
Check out the Canucks schedule, I understand that due to the OLympics being in Vancouver they have a 14 game Road trip! Good grief.
That does sort of put things into perspective. Hope the Canucks all get points for their hotel stays!
I still fondly remember that first post-Bylsma road trip when the Pens just tore it up. Also, Crosby uses fan hate better than any athlete I’ve seen except Kyle Busch. No worries here.

wow
That’s really harsh. Especially considering that teams like Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton have way more travel time than other teams even in normal years.
P is for Latrobe.
