Pittsburgh Penguins re-sign Ruslan Fedotenko
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Ruslan Fedotenko agreed to terms that will keep him in the black and gold next season. Outside of it being a one-year contract I'm not sure what the details are just yet, but it's good to know Pitt will have a guy returning who really worked out well with the top lines last season.
[Update] The deal is for $1.8 mill. That really says a lot about Fedotenko and his drive to win another Cup. Granted he made just slightly more last season ($2.25 mill), but any guy who takes a pay cut to stay on a winning team has something more important on his mind - as in, another Stanley Cup.
Way to go Feds. Happy to see you back.

Well, this works. We know what we’re getting out of Tenks, and that deal – much like Guerin’s – is affordable for the Pens. I updated my payroll thread, and according to my math, the Pens have ~$2.95m to work with in cap space at this point. The good news is that they have 13 NHL-caliber forwards under contract with Caputi and Jeffrey lurking in the minors, so they’re set up front. Now they need to figure out what to do about that elusive 6th D-man and if G Curry is ready for the bigtime.
Heart, Max Talbot has it by the mile. The Pens are your 2008-2009 Stanley Cup Champions.
So…at this point:
Kunitz-Crosby-Guerin
Fedotenko-Malkin-Talbot
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Dupuis-Adams-Godard/Rupp
Orpik-Gonchar
Eaton-Letang
XXXX-Goligoski
Fluery

Lovejoy as the 6th Dman if all else fails.

Lovejoy makes a good 7th D-man, I think. It’s a long season and someone is bound to get hurt, so that would be a great opportunity for Lovejoy to get some consistent playing time, but they need a proven 6th D-man. I think $1.5-2m is a good range for them. Shero will find good value for that price.

I think Frank said McKee was an option?
If he’s a D-first bruiser like Orpik, I’d like them to make a play for him, because both Gill and Scuds were good D-first players. IMO they need another player like that to give them some grit. They’re loaded with scorers, let’s add some toughness.

McKee might also be a bit expensive, so we’ll have to see. This is one of those positions where you may try and entice a guy to sign by luring the Stanley Cup repeat hopes over his contract.

Good!
Glad to see Feds coming back, and like Guerin coming back at a lower rate. Makes up, somewhat for the guys that got cherry picked by teams with more money to spend. Lot easier to keep guys and get a “Discount” if you’re a winner…Go Pens!
OK now who do they pick up on the Blue line for about $2.5M?
2.5 million left
maybe should have offered Scuderi more than 2 a year? Still though, tough to turn down 3.4

Hurrah!
I’m very happy about this news, and the fact that Feds turned down more money and more years to stay makes me like him even more. Bylsma named his system “Ruslan Fedotenko hockey” after Feds… he was an important part of the new system, and important in the locker room. Staying for less will make him even more popular in the locker room.
Plus, I think Geno really appreciates having a Russian speaker on his line — remember when they communicated in Russian and scored?
I thought that Scuderi would stay out of loyalty, and Fedotenko would leave for more money. I turned out to be wrong about both of them — who knew that Scuderi would turn down 8+ million while Fedotenko would stay for 1.8.
Well done Ray!
Great move, I think this signals the end for Petr Gunn
what a class act!
nice to see players that love the game for the competitive side rather than the $$$$.way to go feds and mr shero. back 2 back
Nice job Tenk!
I was thinking he was going to go for the most money, which he could have probably gotten somewhere else..
Now that we’re basically capped out… think the Pens are making the call to Yagr to see if he wants to come here and play for the minimum??? :P
Nice work Shero
Great signing, we’ll have our top lines that we won the cup with for next year. I wonder what Shero will do now that we have a surplus of 4th line forwards? Any chances of swinging some sort of deal for a 6th defensive defensemen? I’d even be ok with a 3rd round pick thrown in to sweeten a deal that gets rid of Dupius? Dump his salary…
Feds threw away a few hundred thousand atliest, Class act
I think once Guerin signed for 2 mil Fedotenko couldn’t ask for more then Guerin, the same Malkin couldn’t ask for more then 8.7 mil once Crosby signed for it. I think there will absolutely be atliest one forward traded. We could get a legit defensemen and still have enough left for a deadline boost. Shero Rules
Phili B
Crosby makes $8.7 million? Figures. :-)
I hope we get a good defenseman, too.

It's so refreshing to see players like Feds and Guerin
After getting screwed over by that mercenary, Hossa, it’s so nice to see players take discounts to play for teams like ours. Personally, I also can’t blame Scuds. Not a lot of people can refuse 8 million dollars. Especially if you make a career out of being a walking target for pucks.
RE: Feds, Scuderi
Actually Scuderi turned down $10M over 5 years for an extra $3.6M and one less year. Scuds is 30, a guy who is going to for the first time experience BIG money. Sorry he left, can’t blame him a bit. Feds, pleasantly surprised he signed for a one year deal and $1.8M at that. Looks like the Pens got a great deal, also like that this signals Feds is out to prove himself and he thinks he can do just that playing alongside Geno. That and maybe the guy is really about being a part of this team again, obviously that was a factor as well. Good to have Tenk back!
Glad to see Fedotenko return
Wasn’t sure he was a good signing after an average season (I felt like with a linemate like Malkin he should have had more points). But the way he played in the Playoffs made me forget all about that. He was one of the toughest players for us, and for that alone I am happy to see him come back. It’s good to retain players like that – the kind that’ll give anything to win (like Talbot and Orpik). << Before i get chastised I mean outside of our star players!
