Blue line in trouble?

Star-divide

I don't really know what to think of the upcoming season.  I'm sure that our stellar offense will keep up the grit and grind but what about the special teams and better yet the defense?  I wouldn't have cared if we only lost Hal Gill OR Rob Scuderi but we lost BOTH.  That doesn't bode well with me.  I love Hal more then beating the Brownies but I wasn't ashamed to see him go.  I mean how many times did we see the oaf bumble down the ice and be about 1500 yards out of position.  I was at a Pens - Panthers game in Florida three rows from the ice, and many of you might remember this.  It was about halfway through the 1st and the puck came flying through the air down towards the flower.  The only people in the area were old Hal and some random Panthers player.  Hal decided instead of leaving the puck to hit the ice, that he would smack it out of the air harder then a beach volleyball player.  Well this swipe went straight backwards, the FLA player got it, and buried it right behind la flower.  The point is how many times a year did we see that happen?  How many times did Hal have no idea if he was holding a hockey stick or a baseball bat?  Did he even fight the whole year?  I honestly cannot recall one time seeing him show any sign of emotion besides complete and utter confusion.  You have to love the guy just because it seems like hes to large and awkward to ever wear a pair of skates.  But I guess there could be worse.  Moving on from Hal i'm honestly not sure what to think about Scuderi.  There is no question in my mind that without big Rob we wouldnt have touched Lord Stanley.  Honestly does anyone remember game 6 of the Stanley Cup?  You think Hal could have stopped three shots in the circle with his arms and legs?  On top of that he even realized not to put his glove over the puck to prevent a penalty shot.  Loyalty and devotion like that is real hard to find these days.  How many players are going to have the brains to remember the rule book in a situation like that and the agility to move his body right where the puck would go.  I love Goligoski as much as the next guy but i'm wondering if he has too much offense potential and not enough defensive potential.  At the same time he is one of the best prospects in our system and why would he play so efficiently in the parts he played this year if it wasnt signs of good play to come.  So really I see the loss of Scuderi being cancelled out by Goligoski.  Its that 6th defensman that i'm worried about.  We have as many players trying to grab the 6th spot as the Bengals do players in jail.  Ben Lovejoy?  I think he deffinitly could but that is a huge position to play.  The next option is Phillipe Boucher.  Unless i've had a mental breakdown I don't remember him being in the playoffs besides the 7th man and I don't remember seeing him on a free agency lists.  So for the time being he could equally qualify for the spot.  The 3rd option is Simon Despres.  I'm just gonna throw him out right now.  He isn't ready, he will be in a few years, but he would fare about as well as Ian Snells Pirates career did if he went into the NHL now.  The last option isssssssssssss Nate Guenin!  Ah that was more of a punchline if anything.  I truly don't know why the hell we signed him besides for insurance.  Is he ever supposed to get past average player?  Doubtful.  So for now I personally throw in Ben Lovejoy.  The only thing that bothers me is having two rookies play defense for us next year.  I guess could he do much worse then Hal Gill?  We'll see.

They dont look as strong on defense as they did at the begining of last season, thats for sure.

My answer is none of the above.

The Penguins will look to sign a reliable veteran guy like Jay McKee or Nick Boynton…McKee could be a great pickup — he’s making money on his buyout from St. Louis so the biggest thing to him might be a 1 year contract to redeem himself through his play and boost his value around the league. And there’s no better opportunity than to come to the Cup champions who still have their core players (Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Fleury) in tact.

But if a free agent isn’t an option, I’d look for a trade. The off-season will go on for a while, no need to panic.

Goligoski figures to be the 5th defenseman, but he almost never played with Lovejoy as a partner in Wilkes-Barre….Even though Lovejoy was an incredible +42 last year in the minors, I don’t think Ray Shero’s going to go into the season with him as the #6 guy, especially for if/when a roster defenseman goes down with injury.

So I fully expect the Pens to add another NHL roster player veteran…They just have to find the right fit, the right contract (in years and dollars). Free agency lasts all summer, no need to panic.

I honestly think the blue-line will be looking just about as good this year as last by the end of the offseason. Goligoski is not just any untested guy out of the AHL. He would have played a full season if they could have gotten one of our other D-men to Wilkes Barre without going through waivers. He should be able to make up defensively for what we lost in the devastatingly slow, hilariously uncoordinated Hal Gill. Throw in a Jay McKee or Nick Boynton, and we’ve got ourselves a defense that might not be quite as good as last year, certainly will have to play a different style than last year because of the different players on it, but will be close in terms of effectiveness..

Reversal of last season

when we lost Malone & Hossa, but kept Orpik (and Eaton?), and had 9 NHL defensemen. The thought then was we would trade a d-man for forward help (which ultimately happened with the Whitney-Kunitz deal). Now we keep the two key forwards, and lose the two D-men. It will sort itself out. One veteran d-man and we have 6 legitimate NHL d-men. We keep our top 4 D pairings, and keep our top 3 lines from the Cup series.

Trouble? Nah. Younger and more inexperienced? That’s a distinct possibility. But that doesn’t mean they’re in trouble. A lot of these younger guys play like it’s their only game. As long as they don’t get comfortable in that position and play a lazy game, I think they’ll be fine. Luckily they’ll have Sarge the vet to rely on, but he can hardly carry the whole defense. It’ll be interesting no doubt, but I don’t think we have to worry. I also don’t think they’re done on the market yet either.

All signs seem to be pointing in that direction. Only DB and Shero know best.

Welcome, btw.

A veteran d-man will eventually join the team

It’s a matter of time, once the FA frenzy winds down (probably soon) and teams assess what they have and what they still need and can afford. We don’t need a top 4 player, as we have Gonch, Orpik, and Letang already. Eaton is steady. Goligoski will be in the mix as stated, and I see Lovejoy being a 6th-7th man with some time in WBS. So all we need to add is someone to be a veteran 6th man in the list, in other words to replace the void left by Gill. Hopefully Letang and Goligoski’s development will continue and their offense will help negate the defense lost with the Scuds-Gill pairing. A healthy Gonchar will also help make up for it too, remember when we were touting him as a Norris candidate in 07-08 season?

Green was a norris candidate too and he didn’t know what his end looked like….

I think they need to bring in a vet on a one year contract, but if they can’t come to terms with someone they feel is right, Lovejoy will be the 6th man. Guenin is probably just a depth option they signed in case they had to bring Lovejoy up, and I’m glad they signed him because we are getting a little thin on options in the event of an injury. I’ve been pretty happy with the choices Shero has made so far (and a little confused…Rupp? Are you gonna trade Godard or what? Don’t leave us hanging!), so I’m confident he’ll have something lined up shortly.

I too was upset with them both going. Honestly I couldn’t have cared if just Gill left. That was amazing what Scuderi did in Game 6
