Sunday linkage: Relive the Brooks Orpik shift, Elias bumps Jagr down, where the Flyers need help
Happy Sunday. Here's a video for your viewing pleasure. It may be from two season's ago with an overall outcome we'd all like to keep behind us, but I can never get enough of this shift:
- Former Penguin Jarkko Ruutu turns 34 today. Seth from Empty Netters posted what is likely his best fight in a Pens uniform. [Empty Netters]
- According to NHL.com, defense and goaltending are the main concerns of the Philadelphia Flyers. Not an inflated salary (Daniel Briere) as we all initially thought. [NHL.com]
- Patrick Elias ends Jaromir Jagr's four-year reign as Czech Player of the Year. [New York Times]
- Wes Goldstein provides a little look into the US Team's development program. [CBS]

I recall reading much criticism of this shift, from folks claiming that the number of hits Orpik delivered indicated he was “running around” in his zone. Looking at it again, he never seems far out of position, and arguably never is out of position. All the hits take place in the same corner, on the back or side boards. Then again, I’ve been an Orpik fan since he wore Marc-Andre Fleury’s number.
Man, how can anyone criticize this shift? The rest of the team is playing zone, he’s just annihilating everything that moves. Someone also suggested that one of the hits should’ve been a boarding call, but I’m sure the person who said that was a Wings fan.
