Wednesday links: Pens win preseason opener, Crosby has a new stick, can Penguins repeat?
- The Pens took down the first game of the preseason with a 5-4 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Sid and Kunitz had two goal apiece while highly touted prospect Eric Tangradi picked up two helpers and dinged one off the post in the first. No worries. The posts are slimmer in Toronto. [One post down]
- The Pens are waiting on their Stanley Cup rings. No picture yet but I'll keep my eyes open. Until then you can read a description of the rings, which is kinda like listening to your friend tell you about some exotic island they went to without you. [Trib-Review]
- Sid put close to seven shots on net last night. This is all, according to some speculation, because of a new stick he's working with. [Post-Gaz]
- Get to know Ben Lovejoy. There's no guarantee but he may just wind up playing on Pittsburgh's blue line at some point this season. [Faceoff Factor]
- The big question working its way through hockey circles is whether or not the Penguins can make a repeat run. Two straight seasons of Stanley Cup Finals is tough, but a young team has a better chance at doing it then say, oh I don't know, the Red Wings. [CBS Sports]
- For all you lucky folks who went out yesterday and picked up NHL 10, former hockey player and long-time Vancouver Canuck Trevor Linden says the fighting mechanism is good practice. So keep at it. There may be an enforcer role waiting for you yet. [THN]
- After heavy rumors suggesting Nik Zherdev was mulling over a signing with the Atlanta Thrashers, word is he has signed with Atlant. No, that's not a typo. Atlant. Not Atlanta. Atlant is apparantly a team in the KHL. Buh byes Zherdev. Have fun. [Blueshirt Banter]

The KHL will become relevant when they have a trophy that has been kissed for 100+ seasons. Zherdev is a decent young player, but until the Russian superstars (ie Malkin and that cherry picker in Washington), or any other superstars for that matter, consider leaving for the KHL, in their prime, it is just another Swedish Elite League. (A place for the “not good enough for the NHL”, the old, or the homesick.)
hah good eye. I’m sure he wouldn’t, but from the times I met him I’m also sure there isn’t much in the world that makes him happy.

It’s a good thing I didn’t run a blog six years ago or I might be referred to as Hooks “Pens should draft Zherdev” Orpik.

It’s ok, I fell into the Aleksey Morozov hype years ago. We all make mistakes.

I still have my #14 Milan Kraft jersey! At least Morozov will be remembered as a bust in 10 years, Kraft will only be remembered by Pens trivia buffs. :(
“Who was the second guy named “the greatest player not in the NHL” to flame-out in a Pens uniform?"
And didn’t we have a third one this year? Pessonen? Wasn’t he labeled the best not in the NHL two years ago? Pens need to stay AWAY from these guys.
Perhaps, but Pesonen was really a risk-free move that didn’t cost the team a thing. As long as they’re not betting the farm (or trading it away) for guys like this, I’m ok with them taking chances here and there.

Don’t feel bad. I actually saw an Ian Moran jersey at a Pens game once when they played the Devils in NJ.

I don’t think it’s fair to acclaim Morozov as a bust. He was 2nd in points on that awful 2003-04 Pens team, he just decided to return to Russia. I think his game is perfect for the bigger rinks of Europe.
In hindsight, it’s a shame the team was making delusions of grandeur at guys like John LeClair and Ziggy Palffy and didn’t make more of an effort to bring Morozov back to this side of the pond.

I don’t really think of Morozov as a bust. It’s was more about timing than anything else. You’re right about the wasted efforts on LeClair and Palffy. Is it fair to say that if you put Aleksey on the 2005 team he’s still a Pen today?. Either that or he’s getting a decent paycheck in the NHL somewhere else.

16G 34A in 75 games is hardly what I would call first-line worthy in any era. Besides, Dick Tarnstrom, DICK TARNSTROM, led the team in scoring. (I had to look it up and completely forgot how utterly awful that team was.) If Mario had not played for them, the 2008 Baby Pens were a better team than those guys.
Somebody had to get the points. He was just the beneficiary of 20 minutes ice time. For all the hype, he was a bust, completely and totally. I am not saying he could not play hockey at all, but he hype surrounding him as the heir apparent to Jagr’s throne as the best European hockey player in the game was way overblown.
