Pittsburgh Penguins The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Ryan Bayda to a one-year contract, it was announced by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Bayda, who attended the Penguins’ 2009 training camp on a professional tryout, earned a two-way contract from the club.
The 5-11, 195-pound winger played parts of five seasons with Carolina after the Hurricanes drafted him with the 80th overall pick (third round) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
Bayda, 28, has tallied 40 points (16G-24A) in 179 career games. Last season, he posted 12 points (5G-7A) in 70 games and four points (2G-2A) in 15 post-season contests, which included four games against the Penguins in the Eastern Conference Finals.
The Saskatoon, Canada native played three collegiate seasons at the University of North Dakota.

Huh!
I guess the Carolina Hurricanes fans who hijacked the “forwards” poll got their way after all. Actually, I’m neither surprised nor disappointed. Bayda’s versatile and experienced.

Nice!
I don’t know about anyone else, but I really like this move. I’m curious to see what happens to Chris Conner now after this news, but if it comes down to only keeping Bayda, Conner, or Bissonette, I think I like Bayda staying the most.
Wow – I had no idea Pens management listened to us so closely. Maybe I need to ask for a referral fee! If Rutherford was reading Canes Country, I’m pretty sure Brandon Sutter would still be in Raleigh and Brindy would have been bought out in June. (just kidding)
I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, Pens fans. Good luck Ryan! How many wings can say they’ve played with 2 Staals?

LOL!! Could be worse. Enjoy.
Did you hear Eric and Tanya had a son Tuesday? Parker Lucas Staal. Another boy, with 3 uncles in the NHL. We’re thinking Linda is thrilled, tho Eric shared that Grandpa was hoping for a granddaughter. Eric has looked so good this pre-season, Parker is getting all the credit for providing inspiration. I wonder how often his name will be repeated every time daddy scores a nice goal this season.
And to add to the lore, Eric took a day off Wed to be with his wife and son, and 20-yr-old Brandon Sutter, who certainly has a great hockey pedigree, filled in for him at practice.
Talk about colorful tibits….

Actually, Conner could still make the roster. The Pens can have 23 active players, and if they go with only 7 defensemen and 2 goalies, they can have 14 forwards. Bissonnette will likely be the odd man out. Of course, once Talbot comes back, they’ll have to send somebody down to WB, probably Conner, unless they do something else to reduce their roster beforehand.
Conner
While it is possible that they could keep 23 on their roster, I read today in the Post Gazette that Shero is considering keeping 20 – 22 players and that’s it. It seems mostly salary cap / playing time related, and it does make sense considering Talbot will be back (hopefully) in November.
Another thing to consider is the players that will have to clear waivers if they are sent down to WB. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if someone picked up a Conner or Bissonnette, but maybe we could snipe someone of equal or greater promise.
