Penguins Receive Stanley Cup Rings
Well, the Penguins website has released images of the Pittsburgh Penguins 2009 Stanley Cup Championship rings. You can see them here. My thoughts and description after the jump.
Personally, I think they look gorgeous. I have always been a fan of the white gold rather than the yellow gold look. The rings are very simple and classy, with the skating Penguin logo featured prominently on the front of the ring, with an outline of the Stanley Cup in the background. The face of the ring is covered almost entirely in diamonds, save for the Penguin logo. The logo itself seems to have used the more yellow gold for the golden triangle from the early 90's, rather than the Vegas gold used on the uniforms today. The white chest area of the Penguin features one large, teardrop shaped diamond.
There is no photo of the detail of the side panels yet, but the website describes them thusly: "The left side of the ring features the player’s name and number as well as a list of the team four playoff series victories. The right side of the ring has the year 2009 split with three Stanley Cups, adorned in diamonds. The two outer Stanley Cups are inscribed on top with 91 and 92, paying homage to the Penguins’ two previous championships."
Overall, I think the rings are very classy, and befitting of a classy organization such as the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Damn. Those are awesome.
How much you think one of these goes for?

Well I know in the NFL the league will pay up to $2000 per ring for Super Bowl rings. I would imagine these cost no more than that.

The PG’s description of the ring said it had 167 diamonds in it. I’m no jewelry connoisseur, but I can’t imagine that a blinged out ring like this could be $2,000 a piece.
I’m sure the team picked up the tab of whatever the league didn’t pay. After all, Burkle, Lemieux and Shero were the principal designers, they know what they wanted and obviously got it.
Even if they were expensive, what’s that to a billionare like Burkle? Especially as a “thank you” to the players and staff that gave the organization a championship.

Mmmm, yes. That definitely sounds reasonable. I honestly didn’t even think of the owners picking up the rest of the tab.

Not bad at all, especially considering how much symbolism they tried to pack into not too much ring! The players ought to like the diamonds.

Pic of Sid sporting the ring. Looks much bigger on the hand than I thought it would.

Forget what I said above about “not too much ring”! Damn!
I loved the expression on Crosby’s face. Pure swagger, finally. Or as WrapAroundCurl might say, “Baller. Status.”

It’s true, that’s exactly what I said.

Red wings ring from last year was apparently $85K a pop
If you believe this page, anyway

The Pens one looks like it might be a little higher, as it has a few more diamonds on the side Cups?

Wow, lots of detail on that one too. Looks like it may have even required a bit more work than the Pens ring. Those rubies or whatever in the wheel are really nice.

Looks like decent quality rubies in the winged wheel. That’ll definitely drive up the cost. You don’t get that color for cheap.

Didja catch the next pic linked from my red wings ring link
Looks like it might be the 1991 Pens championship ring.
Love how they brought back the teardrop diamond torso element for the new one.

One last one, while I'm poking around
http://pittsburghhockey.net/PensPages/scrings.html
Methinks the 1992 ring is a bit too understated
For the record, the Red Wings ring I linked appears to be the 2002 version, and I haven’t seen anything like an $85K value attached to any other championship ring, so I’m a little skeptical. By way of comparison, the Steelers 2009 ring weighs in at $15K.

Oh, man, that’s bad. My rock-bottom “special value” class ring, which turned my finger green the one time I wore it and which I only got because my mother pleaded and whined, looks nicer than that.
