Brooks Orpik named to Team USA

Team USA named their roster for the Olympics; and as widely predicted Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik made the squad.  Forward Bill Guerin and Alex Goligoski -- both seen as longshots as best -- were left out.

Orpik's inclusion brings the Pens final Olympian total to five, he'll join Sidney Crosby and Marc-Andre Fleury (Canada) and Evgeni Malkin and Sergei Gonchar (Russia) in the big tourny.  The US and Canada are in the same group and will play each other; so it seems like Orpik and Crosby will cross paths at some point.

In former Pens news for Team USA: forward Ryan Malone made the team but defensemen Rob Scuderi and Ryan Whitney were both omitted.

I’ve been hoping they’ll be okay with each other the rest of the season after competing against each other in the Olympics. That’s a nice sort of problem to have, though, and other teams will also have it. I’m really happy to see a Penguin on Team USA. I cheered when Orpik’s name was announced.

Also, I admit I smiled huge for Tim Thomas when he skated out at the end. I can’t see a hockey player’s day getting much better than winning a big-deal game with a lot of hype, then being announced as an Olympian.

I wouldn’t anticipate any problems. Not to say that Orpik/Crosby won’t be physical with each other if the puck goes in the corner (they will) but they’re pros and I think everyone on the team is pretty much on friendly terms.

About the most to happen would be some after-the-fact chirping in the NHL lockeroom from teammates if Crosby or Malkin makes Orpik look stupid.

Can someone tell the Bruins PA announcer that Pittsburgh is located in the state of Pennsylvania, not the state of Philadelphia? sigh

But no, I was pretty pumped to see Orpik make it too. I also gave a little cheer at my TV. :)

that was quite the travesty. If I’m not mistaken, didn’t he say, “From Pittsburgh Philadelphia and also Tampa Bay?”

while Orpik was not a lock to make the team, I think he was a pretty safe bet given the fact that Burke likes hard-nosed play. (therefore not a big surprise Whitney didn’t get the call)

As a Pens fan I’m glad Guerin will get the two weeks off… he’s been playing great, but has seemed a bit out of gas in some games and I wouldn’t like to see him like that in the playoffs.

I agree, the time off for Guerin should do him well. It’d have to be tough for a 39 year old to play a condensed 82 game season and Olympics and have a lot left in the tank for a playoff run.

This should give him a perfect chance to “re-charge the batteries” and gear up for the playoffs, rather than keep running for like 8-9 months straight.

Pretty stoked to see Orpik get the nod. Solid Team USA consideration and glad Burke could see that in his decision making.

Let me also say though that I’m not entirely sold on all the Devils on the roster outside of Parise, yet I also can’t disagree with the selections. I am a bit surprised though that Modano didn’t make it.

Yea, i’m rooting for Canada all the way, so it’s been hard for me to pay much mind to the US squad, but omitting Modano and Guerin might leave a bit of a leadership void. It’ll be interesting to see how that works out for them.
