Up next: Dustin Penner, Sam Gagner and the Edmonton Oilers
[SBN Oilers blog - Copper N Blue]
Record: 16-24-5 (15th in West)
Scorers: Dustin Penner (21g, 20a), Lubomir Visnovksy (8g, 19a), Sam Gagner (9g, 17a)
I figured I could afford holding off on the preview until later today, especially when you consider the late starts on schedule this week.
Fact: The Oilers have yet to win a game in regulation this month. Actually, they haven't posted a regulation win since December 11 against the Blues. Since then, the Oilers have gone 1-11-1 with the only win coming against the Maple Leafs on December 30.
Of course the other unfortunate fact is, as you may already know, embedded in the notion that Pittsburgh plays poorly against bad teams. I'd like to think this won't be the case tonight. I still stand by my prediction that the Pens will go 4-1 on this five-game road trip and remain confident that they will skate into Vancouver Saturday night up 3-1 on the road.
Left Wing Lock has rookie goaltender Devan Dubnyk listed as the starter for Edmonton. He's made just four appearances this season in which he's given up 15 goals en route to a 0-2-0 record. I don't mind the kid getting his first NHL win before the season is done, but I'd prefer it if he held off on that achievement for at least one more game.
Another late start again tonight. Puck and thread drop at 9:30. Again, 9:30 start.

Let's not get carried away
No doubt the Pens should win this game comfortably, however you would have said the exact same thing about the Hurricanes coming to town on the heels of an 0-13-1 (or thereabouts) road record at the time, or of a recent visit by the 14th place Maple Leafs. The Pens have certainly proven they can play down to their opponent or viewed the other way the opponent proves they can play at the Pens level. Obviously an inexperienced back up in net plays to the Penguins advantage but I truly hope they go into this game knowing they could lose it, hate to sour the win in Calgary with a follow up loss to a very much struggling Edmonton team! Go Pens Go. Love to see Geno get some of his mojo back TONIGHT!
Actually I do think I said the same exact thing about the Hurricanes at the time, hence my slight hesitation on this one ;-)

Pat Quinn on the starting goaltender tonight (Devin Dubnyk):
"Devan will have to be at his best, and our team, too, so we don’t get embarrassed."
So is that like a white flag? “Ok, ok fine you guys can leave with two points, but please don’t embarrass us.”
I hope the Pens score pounce very early in this one.
871
Sounds a bit scattered to me. Like saying, “Devan has to be good. Oh yeah! and the team too, but mostly Devan.”
