Eric Godard out 4-6 weeks with groin injury
From the official site:
Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma announced that forward Eric Godard will miss the next 4-6 weeks with a groin injury.
"Eric Godard is 4-6 weeks with a groin injury," Bylsma said. "He is still be evaluated with where he is at with that. It will be long term."
Not a huge loss for on the ice, as Godard averages just 4:15 of icetime per game. But his presence at the end of the bench may have deterred some abuse for Pens top players (I'm thinking about Donald Brashear burying Sidney Crosby in the corner after Godard left with his injury).
The Penguins only have eight games before the Olympic Break, and will be on leave until March 2nd -- which will be five weeks from the time of Godard's injury. So it's possible they may not miss their bodyguard for many actual games, even if he'll be hurt for a month or longer.

He’ll likely be healthy just in time for the trade deadline. Coincidence?

Perhaps. Maybe a team out there wants an enforcer for next season at a reasonable rate.
Then again, I think the Penguins like having him around at the end of the bench, just in case. Crosby/Malkin can double shift and pick up the extra ice time (hell that’s better for them) and if anything happens there’s nothing wrong with having a big dog ready to attack.

I wouldn’t think there are a lot of “buyers” for Godard… and also agree that the Pens will most likely keep him
You have to see it for yourself...
I don’t see Godard going straight up But I can see him as a package deal or something

They have Rupp to help fill that void though of the presence. It’s just a question of whether he wants to make his presence known. Also Cooke can do some lifting and possibly one of the D, I’m thinking Skoula. Take one for the team old man.
A bee in a bird's nest never made no honey, and a bird in a hive sang no song.
Godard is a top 10 heavyweight in the league. Rupp can fight if needed, but he’s not in the “true enforcer” mold like Godard is.
The team definitely has toughness; McKee will fight, Adams will go (even if he shouldn’t), pretty much to a man anyone would drop the gloves if someone gets put in a bad situation. Hell, Letang fought two games ago. I’m not worried about that, I’m just worried about the muscle behind it.
It’s always good to have a “big brother” behind you to clean things up, and Godard’s one of the best in the biz at that.

I don’t mind having him around for insurance purposes, although I’m not sure his salary numbers. With the ability of all the 4th liners to play wing, its no problem for Crosby, Malkin, and Staal to pick up the extra time to center the 4th line. They should be getting the extra minutes anyway, not to mention some of the ad lib lines produce results from time to time. It’s a formula that worked in the playoffs. If you remember, they were dressing 7 defensemen and 11 forwards.
I think they went 7 D mainly to ease the pressure on Gonchar and the bad knee he had.
But your overall point is very true, Godard’s likely not in the the lineup for this spring’s playoffs. Just as he was a scratch every game last time

Hooks can you elaborate on that a little more- did Godard get a ring then? What are the requirements to be able to get a ring. i.e. how many games do you have to play in the regular season and/or baseball? And how does it compare to other sports?

Crap, I meant and/or playoffs.

To get your name on the Stanley Cup you have to be on the roster at the end of the season play at least 40 reg season games or 1 game in the SC Finals. Teams can do sometimes to make appeals to the league to include a player.
So Eric Godard’s name is on the Cup, since he played 70+ games last season.
I think the rings are done by the team, I’m sure Godard got one, I think even guys like Goligoski (who didn’t play much) would have gotten one.

I am not sure but I think if you played in the playoff run at all you are included on the cup.
I am pretty sure Mike Zigamanous is on there from last year, and I really don’t remember him playing all that much.

Zigomanis is on. He only played 22 reg season games with the Pens before his shoulder injury and the team appealed to the league to get him on the Cup, since he didn’t meet the minimum requirements. There must have been enough room, because the league approved it. Sometimes they will deny such requests.

Okay,
I am friends with a cousin of his from canada, and he told me about it and I looked it up, wasn’t sure how he made it on though.

Well, as has been noted before, Detroit seems to have gotten by just fine all these years without an enforcer. Chuck him overboard and get on with life.
I still stand by the fact that the days of enforcers are over. I have not once seen a situation where someone takes a liberty with Sid/Geno and it’s GODARD who defends them. It’s usually Rupp or someone already on the ice. Godard is unnecessary. Let guys like Jeffrey get some 4th line time, provide some energy, and chip in a goal here and there. This team’s plenty tough.
Didn't Big George just get outright waived?
I can’t rememeber hearing too much about him this year (other than the T&A commercial), but he has been a legit top 5 (former HWY champ) for more than a few years. If he can get waived, the goon era is truly over.
I agree that he is a nice presence to have at the end of the bench, but I would rather proceed with a line-up ready to head into the playoffs than see Goddard return from injury and take roster spot for 3 weeks only to be sat for the playoffs.
Laraque has a $1.5 million cap hit this season and next, that’s an expensive 4th liner in this day and age where a lot of the top teams are right up near the salary cap. You’re definitely on to something about this being the end of the goon era, the pure “enforcer” is a dying breed.

I thought it was a pretty significant contract when the season started too. Same can be said of Brashear in NY.

larpque got waived, according to Montreal hockey sources, because not only he caused some “distrctions” off the ice (commercial), but also had only 4 fights the whole year (pretty much the same as he was doing inPigh). At 1.5 mil a year towards the cap that’s a lot of money if you are not willing to do your job. Even Bob Gainiey recognized this and told him good bye.
Yup, apparently he was only willing to fight opponents who were his ‘peer’ as far as fighting skill went.
I hear thought I read that he is interested in a contract with a Swedish team or something.

This From The Rink.
Looks like Georgie is being stopped from trying to get to AIK.

Worse than waived — they told him to stay home for the rest of the season. They will buy out his contract this summer.
