Toronto gets Phaneuf, Giguere, Sjostrom, + others

PrintI was kind of shocked to see all these moves happen today, but I would think this is just the beginning to a few transactions that will come before the Olympic Deadline. I know those of us that watched the Pens vs. Red Wings knows about these, but I saw it hadn't been posted so thought I'd throw it on.
Maple Leafs nab Phaneuf, Giguere

Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brian Burke has seen enough of his underachieving club.
Sunday morning, Burke remade the Maple Leafs with two bold moves, acquiring defenseman Dion Phaneuf and goalie J.S. Giguere in separate trades.
"We are in buying and selling mode," Burke said during his morning press conference to announce a deal for Phaneuf, who comes aboard with two other players from the Calgary Flames in exchange for four players.
The complete deal was Phaneuf, right wing Fredrik Sjostrom and prospect Keith Aulie to Toronto for forwards Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Jamal Mayers and defenseman Ian White.

Burke was back at the podium later in the day to announce the acquisition of Giguere from the Anaheim Ducks. Sent to Anaheim were goalie Vesa Toskala and winger Jason Blake.

Well, the Leafs get finally rid of Toskela who has been really, really, really etc, aweful sofar this season. With Giguere, Phaneuf and Gustavson their defense seems to shape up rather nicely but they have like no scoring now besides Kessel. For Calgery this move makes sense since there have been rumors about problems between Sutter and Phaneuf and they had too many expensive defensman, they need the secondary scoring badly,this trade might also shake them awake since they have been in a nasty slump lately.
There is a knack to flying: it's learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

Giguere’s been inconsistent lately, but due to his contract the Ducks basically gave him away.
As far as the Phaneuf deal goes, if you would have proposed this deal a year ago, people would laugh you all the way to the mental ward. I think in the long run this could be a really good deal for TOR….Calgary probably needed to clear the table and get a bad attitude out of the room, but jeez they didn’t seem like they got much back for the long-term.

Jiggy (as the Ducks announcers called him) has been horrible, inconsistent is generous Hooks. And I think he’s been like that for the past couple seasons.

This is awesome news. Jason Blake is no longer in the Eastern Conference, so we don’t have to put with him much anymore.
Unfortuneately this also means that the cheap-shot artist known as Phaneuf will be in the eastern conference. All forwards beware…the elbow will be flying. How awful, Pronger and Phaneuf come to the eastern conference in the same year.
I haven’t seen a lot of Phaneuf, but to me it seems like his reputation might be a little more extreme than his consistent play is. I’ll be the first to admit if I’m wrong, but I think he’s made a few splash plays, a couple of flashy moments and everyone thinks of him as a bigger impact player than he really is.
