Morning links: USA wins big, ATL fans upset at Kovy, Max's shoulder still bothering him?

Congrats to Team USA U-20 on beating Team Canada in Canada to earn the gold medal in the WJC's.  Yes, the likely marks the first and last time Penguin fans will be happy for OT hero John Carlson (Washington Caps property). [TSN]

Given his salary demands, Atlanta fans are a little fed up with Ilya Kovalchuk's efforts on the plays of some of the Penguins goals last night [Bird Watchers Anonymous]

If there's injury, Jordan Staal still has some support to make Team Canada for the Olympics yet. [The Hockey News]

Is Ian Laperriere under-performing for the Flyers? [Broad Street Hockey]

In Lou We Trust talks a lot of trash about Jack Johnson making Team USA (deservedly so) but still pencils in Brooks Orpik as the #7 d-man?  Riiiight. [ILWT]

If I was 47 years old and riding buses in the AHL I’d be drinking a lot too.

We’ve seen it being mentioned at a couple of places already… I checked some stats and it does seem consideration worthy… Jordan Staal for the Selke this season? what are you thoughts? may be too early to win it but a nomination?

You have to see it for yourself...

I think offensive numbers have too big of and influence on the Selke award. They shouldn’t really matter at all, but it always seems to be good defensive guys with a lot of points. At the mid season point Staal would be a Selke finalist for me though. Its hard to get a lot of attention for anything when the guys in front of you are name Crosby and Malkin. I think Staals play in the playoffs the last few years should at least put him on the radar for a lot of people.

Staal is too young

Don’t be shocked when John Madden wins it again now that he is healthy and it was a big deal that he went to the Blackhawks. It amazes me how a guy that scores a bunch of short handed goals, but gives up more due to his attempts at cherry picking, can win this award. Typically worst award ever. Plus the Pens play an offensive system which automatically excludes Staal from many voters radar.

My point is that politics play a huge part, unlike the awards tha are not subjective.

by Ulf Murphy on Jan 6, 2010 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, awards like the Selke have a lot to do with reputation.

I think Staal has a pretty solid reputation throughout the league, he’s certainly regarded as one of the best defensive forwards.

I bet you liked putting Washington Caps property at the end of john carlson’s name. :-)
