Pittsburgh Penguins vs Montreal Canadiens

October 9, 2010

We knew the history coming into this. The Habs closed out the old barn in embarrassing fashion. Now, the Pens had a chance to get their first win in the new barn against this storied team. Continue past the jump to see how it turned out (in case you don't already know ;-)

The night started with dinner at the Lexus Club. I get that corporate sponsorship is the way of things, but it felt like the oh so generic nature of the name (sure do miss the Igloo Club) carried over to the offerings at the club. It's early, though, and hopefully they will work out the kinks. They certainly were very open to criticism and seemed genuinely interested in making improvements. We'll see...maybe.

We ran late for warm-ups. I have to admit, I ducked when Tanger let this one go. I mean, glass or no glass, I somehow knew he'd miss the net.

LET'S GET IT ON!

The PK watch was on. Do It for Staal! Michalek lines him up...

Nothing new here. Pens give up the first goal:

PK Watch 2. Comrie, taking on Lapierre and taking down PK Soupcan, is looking to be a fan favorite here pretty soon.

Hal Gill, making his presence felt....

On offense, leading the rush?

And on defense:

At some point, the Pens scored. I think. Couldn't see the goal through the idiot fans who were making their way back to their seats while the puck was in play.

Letestu mentions how nice it is that Soupcan, who appeared to be dying just minutes earlier, had made his way back to the game.

Say what you will about Lapierre. He is certainly good at being a pest...

But that right there is what you call screening the goalie. Yes, Fleury is back there somewhere.

Missed opportunities are becoming the early theme for the Pens.

Thought for sure Sid was going to get one on this next series:

It didn't seem to last long. Habs tied it. Oh well, at the very least we'll get some bonus hockey, right?

Overtime plans were squashed as Gomez potted the game winner just 24 seconds later.

Again, the Pens couldn't get much going trailing by a goal in the closing seconds.

To cap off the "perfect" weekend, I hurried back to Maryland this morning to watch my first NFL game, only to see the Baltimore Criminals trounce my beloved Broncos. Fortunately, no photos of that game are available.

Next weekend I'll be taking the Knitting Lady up to the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival in New York. So, look for the next game photos post after the October 30th game in Raleigh. Until then, GO PENS!!!
