Typical Steve Simmons. He doesn’t like the cap. I would love to see higher calibre players with Crosby, but I accept the compromise in order to maintain a viable league and better parity. Yes, it is fun when your team is always expected to win (like when I was a Habs fan in the 70s and 80s) but that does nothing to keep this great game around for people who don’t follow that team. Anyway, ongoing debate. Simmons brings every argument back to the cap – sometimes it’s a stretch. Here it is not as much of a stretch, obviously, but it would help if he at least got his facts straight. Malkin started the year with Comrie and Tangradi, not Crosby, and that line actually played well.
When you see plays like the one last night when he set up Dupuis for that one-timer it really makes you wonder how many points he could rack up if he had a bone-fide all-star right-winger with a right handed shot. 150 points dosen’t sound so crazy, does it? I know ‘The Monster" made a fantastic save on Dupuis, but you have to believe that a goalscorer finishes that one off. Even the one to Letestu from behind the net when they had the extra-attacker, those shots just seem to find the back of the net for the finishers in the NHL. And this happens almost every game.
Just sayin’, it would be a whole lot of fun, sort of like watching Mario in 88-89.
The team as a whole is better without him, and I don’t know if we win the Cup with the cap space he would’ve taken up, but with a guy like Hossa on Sid’s line full time, 150 pts in definitely not out of the question.

150 points is totally out of the question.

He had 120 with two linemates no where near Hossa’s talent.
Not saying that he would do it every year, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility by any means.

Since Sid scored 120, no one’s scored more than 113.
Sure, if you lined up say Rick Nash and Alex Ovechkin with Sid and told them “hey boys, only focus is to score” then Sid would top 120.
But in today’s NHL, 150 is unreachable. The game’s too tightly contested, goalies are too good.

It’s just team building.
San Jose spends a ton on their first line to have Thornton, Heatley and Marleau together…How does that go for them in the spring?
Washington spends a lot to keep offensive players around Ovechkin (Backstrom, Semin, etc)….How has that been working out?
Pittsburgh has spent a lot in net, on defense and on other centers. It makes the team good. The point isn’t to get Sidney Crosby the best possible wingers, it’s to win games.

Yes. And if they were winning games you’d have something here.
I mean, I agree with most of what you’re saying, but your argument won’t be particularly convincing until the Pens crawl out of their current funk and start putting actual points up in the standings.

So because they’ve lost three of four games to start the season (with important and highly paid players like Staal, Orpik and Michalek injured for some/all of it) the whole premise of Pittsburgh’s team building is wasted?
Don’t buy it.
Would life be better for everyone if Sid had allstar caliber wingers? Sure.
Does it need to happen to have a Cup winning team? Absolutely not.

That’s not quite what I’m saying. You contraposed getting Sid wingers with winning games, but right now the Pens aren’t winning games. Yes, the season is young, but they also struggled toward the end of last year, and then had a frustrating ousting from the playoffs. You seem to have said “The point isn’t to get Sidney Crosby the best possible wingers, it’s to win games” in an attempt to counter someone who’s disposed to make the “get Sid some wingers” argument — not to mention the disposition to taking a narrow view of things. It’s not going to convince that sort of person if the Pens aren’t winning, regardless of other factors (like Staal, Orpik & Michalek).
