Pens Drop First Game of Preseason, Arron Asham Leaves with Injury
For the first time in this meaningless preseason, the Penguins dropped their first game, falling to the Blackhawks by the final of 5-2. For what it's worth, Marc-Andre Fleury put on a pretty decent game despite letting in two goals in the second period. Marion Hossa notched two goals for the Hawks as part of a story line that just won't die in Pittsburgh, while Alex Goligoski and Craig Adams picked up a goal each for the Pens.
On the bright side, some of the Pens' top starters got a chance to sit this one out and watch some of the prospects like Eric Tangradi, Simon Despres and Dustin Jeffrey get a little time. On the downside, Arron Asham left the game with an "upper-body injury" after registering just one minute and thirty-three seconds of ice time. Injuries are obviously the last thing you want to take from a preseason game, but if the Pens are faced with a situation they can't control let's at least hope it's not too serious.
Sunday evening the Pens close out the preseason against Detroit. Puck drops at 5:00 ET.

No real panic buttons here…
It’s still the pre-season & the Hawks have essentially their entire squad playing here. Martin took a smart penalty & the kids still sound pretty decent.
One more note, this game gave me a little dejavu in which Flower played his little heart out but was undone by shoddy defense. I’ll scratch this down as a fluke.
Is it October yet?
Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.

From the radio broadcast, it sounded like all the turnovers that led to goals were made by guys who aren’t making the team anyway.

I agree, no panic button, but you still don’t want to see a guy go down with an “upper-body” injury. Shoulder? Ribs? Who knows. Alls I know is he didn’t return to the game and can probably afford to sit out the last one of the preseason and rest up for the week leading up to Game One against the Flyers.

Happily fixed it for ya. =]
When will the season finally start, you ask? Well, here's your (new and improved) answer.

This. This. This.
I was actually happy for him when he raised the Cup.

Did it have anything to do with who he beat to get it?
On a serious note, I was happy for him as well. And not just because of who they played against.
it was hard for me to not smile when he raised the Cup (so yes, I did smile), but after that I’ve gone back to slight disgust.

I have no hard feelings towards Hossa anymore. I didn’t like the way he bolted for Detroit, even though he had every right to (being a free agent and all). But he paid for his mistake a year later, and I’m sure he spent a lot of sleepless nights regretting his decision. He’s paid his dues as far as I’m concerned.
This pretty much describes my experience. Are you sure you aren’t me?

Come to think of it, I’ve never seen the two of you in the same live thread at the same time. hmmmm

Well … it’s not like I’m using my double identity to fix a playoffs-guessing-game-that-as-it-turns-out-has-no-prizes, or anything …

Hey, I won that game fair and square. So I was the one who won nothing instantly.

Yes, but what better way to fool the enemy than to start talking to mysel … er … nothing!

I didn’t watch any of the game but I can say that from a lineup perspective the Hawks had a curtain call of sorts while we had mostly youngins dressed. Finding who wants the winger spot(s) and who will be our 7th & 8th D-man is our goal these last 2 preseason games.
Our defense was missing that “big check/fear me” guy ( not counting Mr.Engelland because at this point we are looking for overall play, not just checking ). Orpik and Michalek sat out. Not saying one of those guys would have stopped Chicago single handily, but maybe it would have balanced the D lines out more.
Every day is a great day for hockey!
Flower allowed two goals on 16 shots I heard. That’s good? I also thought number like that meant you didn’t do too well. (I’m seriously asking if that’s good though.)
What bothered me was after Sports Center last night, Linda Cohn mentioned that the Hawks stomped the Pens 5-2 and it made it sound like Chicago is going to be amazing and we suck. Of course she didn’t mention that they dressed all of their stars, we didn’t.
That’s what happened when we played Buffalo. Don’t worry, you can extract your revenge by beating them in the regualer season, when it matters

The number itself isn’t horribly good, but Fleury got screwed in that game. Almost all of the saves he had to make were absolutely ridiculous chances for the Hawks, and the two that did go in he had no chance on. As I recall, both were on horrible turnovers that lead to odd man rushes.

If I remember correctly, they were saying that he had no chance on the two goals (left out to dry) and the 14 saves he did make sounded awesome.
He played pretty well last night.
