Just posted a fanshot about this, which I now will delete
Really sucks for him, I thought he’d make it. Does this mean retirement.
One more thing: For those who say that the one knock on Sid Crosby is that he doesn’t make his linemates better….

When will the season finally start, you ask? Well, here's your (new and improved) answer.

Crosby does make players better, but I think it might say more that a Pens first line winger last season can’t even stick on the top three lines in Philly.

(Though Billy G’s skills have been going downhill for a while, so it’s not really fair).

It might be more that when a top-six guy loses his top-six form he has to find a way to become a bottom-six guy — which is difficult to do. If he can’t do that, and if the market is like it is right now, then it’s going to be difficult to stick anywhere.

Still … I hope he finds a hockey home.

He dosen’t want to leave the east coast so he’s really limiting himself to about half the teams in the league. Even when there might be a team on the brink of a championship looking for a cheap playoff experienced veteran.

by Lindas1st on Oct 4, 2010 4:48 PM EDT reply actions

Sad fact is Guerin:
—Wasn’t good enough that Pens wanted him back
—Wasn’t good enough to make it in Philly
—Would not be good enough to add anything to Washington (who has Knuble now anyways)
—Wouldn’t fit in Boston

Who on the East coast is left that’s a realistic contender?

Unless he is willing to go somewhere like NYI, this is the end of the line for Billy G. Even then who knows if he’ll get a contract this late in the season.

I can see the Islanders throwing something at him. It’s the only realistic team in my mind, given the fact that they are already dealing with injuries. However, it would be his “return” to the island, they aren’t Cup contenders and there’s no stopping them from demoting him once the young team is back, healthy and ready to play together.

Even still, I can’t help but think they might consider bringing him on board with the hopes of him helping Tavares along a la his work in Pittsburgh. Stranger things have happened.

Karma.

Long post here guys sorry, lots to say.

Billy G to the Flyers was all about him and getting back at the Pens management. If he wanted a place to skate like he said, there are many other teams shallow at the Foreword position pre-free agency so that he could have easily make the team. Florida, NY, Calgary, Minnesota just to name a few on my mind.

Ray Whitney was quick to be picked up and had 58 points last year compared to Billy G’s 45…and Whitney was a “coveted free agent.” I think Bill Guerin CAN skate at many places but chose the Flyers because he was bitter at the Pens openly saying they would not bring him back. Also he probably doesn’t want to move his family very far, but that ranks second behind his career choices.

I am glad personally that we didn’t bring him back and chose to stick to our guns and let the young guys work up. I was really a BIG fan of Mr. Guerin until he pulled the Flyers BS on us. I am warming up to Tangradi a lot more now seeing him play and his personality, plus he is pretty cool on Twitter.

I hope he does get picked up, just not in our division.

I dunno. I think you’re making too much of the rivalry. As much as we fans hate the Flyers, and the players get up for those Pens-Flyers games, I doubt there’s much in the way of a ‘bad blood’ relationship between Pens & Flyers management.

Same here, twin
I don’t hate the Flyers as much as everyone else, so I’m not really mad about this. It was only a tryout contract, and I feel like Billy went to the Flyers more out of necessity because he couldn’t find any other spots.

He did not betray the Pens. The Pens did not want to sign him. For a good reason, as good as Billy was, last year his age and wear and tear caught up with him. Yeah, he is a great guy to have around, but the Pens were not going to give him a contract just for that. He should retire, if decides not to I wish him all the best. He is one of those players that gave it all, no matter where he played (including the US team in case some of you people forgot). All the best Billy no matter what you decide.

Shero denounced speculation that Guerin was unwilling to take less money this season with the Penguins at $1.7 million below the NHL’s $59.4 million salary cap.

Only team in the division that might consider taking him at this point is the Islanders. Devils might have space if they move Langenbrunner, which is and has been a heavy rumor for a while now. Flyers and Pens already passed and Rangers probably wouldn’t be the first to call at this point.

Billy G to the Flyers was all about him and getting back at the Pens management.

That was more the Philly media trying to make it an even bigger story than what it actually was. I think Billy G just wanted a job and Philly offered him a tryout.
If the sources for your way of thinking come from the Philly media, there’s a reason for that.

Ray Whitney was quick to be picked up and had 58 points last year compared to Billy G’s 45

Billy G: playing with Sid.
Ray Whitney: Not playing with Sid

at the Pens openly saying they would not bring him back

I mean…is that a horrible thing to do? It’s pretty commonplace, as far as I’m concerned. It would’ve been blatantly obvious about a week later when he was wearing orange anyway.

I was really a BIG fan of Mr. Guerin until he pulled the Flyers BS on us

No offense, but I think you’re making a whole lot outta nothing here. This was really just a guy who had specific requirements and Philly fit them. It’s unfortunate that he didn’t make the team, but he definitely wasn’t doing it to get back at the Pens.

I mean in that regard yes I would take the job, but look at guys that moved from coast to coast to skate, he wasn’t willing to do that and it seemed like him and his agent only would talk to the Flyers and immediately he joined up. The whole thing just seems fishy to me. Him not making it IMP shows he wasn’t 100% committed and that his reasons for being there were not hockey related.

The one promise I have to Billy is if we are going to move in another direction we are going to call him and let him know and vice versa.

The quote I posted was from July 1st FA before the signings. They contacted each other but Billy G’s interest was so minimal that we had to start looking elsewhere. If he would have just said OK lets work on a contract then it would have been all good! Shero made the decision but Billy G had his own fate in his hands.

All of the rumors/reports/radio shows/blogs/stories around July 1st pointed back to him wanting more money than we would give. If he would have stepped up and said OK I will take less money it would have been over, and Shero would have picked him up instantly. Instead we had to play Go Fish with the FA’s.

And Billy G’s interest wasn’t minimal…If anything, it was the Pens interest that was minimal:

“It was a difficult call to make,” general manager Ray Shero said. “He wanted to play here, wanted to finish here. He loved the team. His family loved the community. You think about all of those things when you make a call like that.”

Besides, on July 1st, the Pens were too busy to worry about Billy G. If I recall correctly, Shero said after the day was done, that he would start dealing with Billy now that he had signed the guys he wanted.

You empathize with him? You have actually been passed over by your NHL team when your contract was up and then tried out for another team and then did not make that one? I think you mean sympathize buddy.

So until you actually know that Bill Guerin purposely went to the Flyers tryout just to spite the Penguins because he felt wrong, despite numerous reports and interviews given by Billy saying that it was nothing like that, don’t pass it off as fact. Because that could be considered libel in some states.

Please quit it with this “vendetta” thing. You had obviously been given some bad information, which I tried to kindly correct. So why, even after I’ve given you the same source at least three different times, do you continue to insist that you have a valid point?
There was no vendetta. Period. The final horn has sounded and Elvis left the building about a month ago. It was something that was implied by the Philly media, but was not supported with any quotes. One, small article written over a month ago disproves everything you’re still trying to say.

But anyway, let’s not start calling each other children now. Obviously a fact is a fact but there is going to be a TON of speculation in any sort of situation like this. I personally don’t see how Billy G could be seen as a traitor or a coward or anything like that. He may not have bowed out with “style,” but few guys are ever given the opportunity to say a formal, classy good-bye. It’s a business, above all else, and this guy is looking for work. Whatever his preferences are, that’s his choice. He’s played long enough and he is old enough to make those rules for himself. He’s not holding any teams against it. If anything he’s limiting his chances and he seems to be cool with that…for now.
