Jeff Carter Signs 11-Year Deal With Flyers
Reported to be worth $58M, or slightly over $5M per year on the cap hit.
What do you think the (likely, very fun) consequences of this deal will be for Philly? For one, it certainly looks like Zherdev won't come back next year, unless he plays for league-min. Also, this will probably wind up pushing either Giroux or van Riemsdyk out the door after next season, which would be hilarious. Anyway, discuss.

Carter’s not worth 5 million a year. I think this compromises their ability to resign other guys like Briere & Hartnell.
I can’t imagine Hartnell in any other jersey though… Maybe as a Cap…

Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.
This deal is a 250k raise from the existing deal, so I don’t see how this is going to disintegrate our team too badly. I was scared a Carter deal would do that, but I don’t think this deal will.
Briere is a 33 year old with another 5 years left on his deal. He’s not coming back after that deal is over. So there’s no problem with resigning him.
Hartnell is a good guy (as much as you guys think he’s a dirty player, he is really great with the fans) and he’s got 3 years left on his deal. He might be back or might be let go. He’s not someone who’s incredibly difficult to replace.
Giroux already signed a deal at 3.75 million per, which is a bargain. So he’s not out the door after next season. When he finishes the deal he’ll be an RFA. This will be the same season Kimmo Timonen will probably retire from the NHL as his 6.33 million dollar contract finishes. All that money will go into re-signing Giroux long term.
Zherdev is probably gone. It seems there is good progress in re-signing Leino, which makes it very unlikely Zherdev stays beyond this season. Not many were expecting him to anyway.
The other possible ‘fun’ scenario that you put out was that JVR is out the door after next season. Realistically JVR is not getting anywhere near Giroux money – he hasn’t done too much yet, but most expect him to peak later anyway – so he’s probably looking at a 3 million dollar contract at max.
I’m not going to lie, it’s going to be tough to manage the cap with so many good players signed long-term. But I think the guys to go will be Meszaros (4 million dollar #5 defenseman is expendable) or maybe one of Coburn/Carle at some point. JVR/Giroux/Richards/Carter/Briere are incredibly safe. And we’ve got Bobrovsky on his entry level for another two seasons.
Plus if the ESPN deal is signed and/or the NBA/NFL lockout a season, revenue will rise, the cap will rise, and the Flyers will be incredibly smart to lock up all their assets long term so early in the season.
Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

A bit of a shame that JVR might not stay around. I guess I have a soft spot for the guy. Maybe he’ll pull an Asham & come to the Pens… /wishfulthinking/

Hold up hold up…I didn’t say JVR was going. That’s what wg1of5 said! JVR’s gonna be a Flyer for at least 4 more seasons barring a trade offer that we can’t refuse.

I thought this was a very good deal for the Flyers. It’s obviously too long, but I’m guessing that’s the only way they could push the cap hit down that far. They get the best years of his career at a very nice cap hit. The cost of this is an inflated cap hit when he’s in his mid thirties, but with the Flyers presumably in win-now mode over the next 5+ years, this deal is the right move.
This deal almost certainly means that Zherdev will be done with the club once the one year contract is up, but I don’t see how that’s a bad thing. Signing Zherdev on the cheap gave Giroux and JVR another year to mature, and they’ll fill any void left by his departure.
JVR isn’t up for a contract extension until Carle and Coburn are as well, so he’s not really in any danger as I see it. I would be more worried about guys like Carcillo and Leino. If they want any significent raise they’ll have to find it elsewhere.
Sadly, this appears to be a good move by the Flyers GM.
