Thoughts and Notes Leading Up to the Rangers
- With Marc-Andre Fleury's two-straight wins this weekend, do you start him against the Rangers tonight or let him sit? When Brent Johnson was winning Dan Bylsma didn't exactly "ride the hot glove" as many thought he would. Will he treat his starting goaltender differently?
- Sidney Crosby is on a five-game point streak in which he's scored at least one goal in each outing. His point total over that span is 12: an even six goals and six assists. He leads the team with 27 points and is ranked second in the league, just one point behind Tampa's Steve Stamkos.
- Didja know Kris Letang is tied for first in the league for most points by a defenseman? His total of 17 (3g, 14a) puts him on par with Detroit's Nick Lidstrom.
- The Rangers, similar to the Pens, are riding a slight two-game win streak. The similarity even extends to Marian Gaborik, who just like Evgeni Malkin registered a hat trick and an assist in New York's last win, an 8-2 rout over the Oilers.
- Pssst - Ruslan Fedotenko.

Forget MAF or Beej, in light of what Allie found, Sid will start in goal for us & let MAF & Beej catch a well deserved break.
But in all seriousness, I don’t mind seeing Beej in the net. Lest we forget, he might be playing well but he’s starting to be in a bit of a slide now. Hopefully this picks him up & we get a spicy tandem going forward…
Plus, SID!!!!

Speaking of conspiracies, how is Letang not on the all-star ballot? He’s tied for league lead in pts by a defenseman, but Martin is on there instead of him? Ridiculous

I think they chose the players from each team before the season started which makes no sense.
Plus, this is only for the All-Star starters, so it’s not the end all be all.

I think Fleury gets the nod again tonight, hes starting to heat up and once he starts to heat up you have to keep playing him.
Also, very proud of Tanger, not sure I called it out here but I said that by the end of this season Letang would be one of the more well rounded d-man in the league.

IMO…Fleury gets the call. Why wouldn’t you? He’s show want we all know he can do the past few games in with the Rangers burying 8 goals against the Oilers yesterday, odds of them falling asleep in this game are pretty good. I say Flwoer gets the start, Pens win 4-0. Gino plays well, Sid gets 2.

I love the point production but I am hoping he is not turning into MIKE GREEN from the Craps! Scores in bunches but is an absolute awful defender.
by LightningCoach on Nov 15, 2010 8:38 AM EST reply actions
Tanger and GoGo catch a lot of flak from fans, perhaps because they are such dynamic players so their mistakes are a little more glaring, but the stats don’t paint the same picture of these guys being awful defenders. They are putting up big offensive numbers so obviously the Pens are scoring a lot of goals when they are out there, but also on the flip side they are #1 and #3 on the team among defensemen in lowest goals against per 60 minutes played.
On the other hand, with Fleury’s play improving, I guess we need to find a new whipping boy fast or we risk not having anything negative to say about the team.

Now now, be advised here...
I wasn’t trying to make them my new “whipping boys”. I never said they were awful defenders. I said I hope they don’t turn into a Mike Green. Even then, never brought up GoGo…but you are right, they do catch flack. Now, I know you’re not calling my out, but I just want to make sure you know…I’m not looking for an argument. After all, on this team, if you’re not number 87, you’re fair game…Again, not from me. Geez you have to be careful these days. Nothing can be said without being scrutinized. They are just opinions, after all.

Not trying to call you out, but I’ve now heard three separate people in the last couple of days make this comparison between Letang and Mike Green. I think it’s best to nip these kinds of things in the bud. If you’re comfortable being the guy who mentions Tanger and Mike Green in the same sentence (and in caps, no less), then you should also be okay with people not taking that too well.
A completely separate discussion would be a debate on the pros and cons of Mike Green, but we’ll forgo that conversation for now and just assume that Pens fans in general have a dim view of Green’s defensive abilities and so any comparison to him is not meant to be a complement.

I bring you back to that shoulder to shoulder check that Tanger got on Comeau when he got tossed against the Isles. I got 10 bucks that say that Mike Green breaks a shoulder executing that hit.
Either way, Tanger’s way more physical than he was last year. He’s practically Free Candy-lite now. Stuff that he needs to improve on are things like decision making and one-on-one coverage on D, stuff that can be easily figured out over the course of a season or two.
Tanger will never be Mike Green & I’m proud of that.

I don't care anymore.
As I said before…“I am hoping he is not turning into MIKE GREEN.” Get over the all caps thing as well. I am not comparing him to Mike Green, I am not saying he is going to be Mike Green, I said I hope is is not turning into him. It’s legitimate. Don’t nip it, deal with it. That’s why we have these boards so people can express their opinions. It’s their opinion…that’s it! What I said, still not really opinion, just a statement.
by LightningCoach on Nov 15, 2010 10:07 AM EST up reply actions
For someone so adamant about the free expression of opinions, you don’t seem too interested in having mine out there.
I’m guessing your main problem is with the last sentence in my original reply. It wasn’t meant to be directed solely at you, but when the guys on tPB do a podcast and spend 5 minutes talking about Tanger’s supposedly poor defense, then see the idiots on twitter, and then come here and see your throwaway comment, it seems like a trend that I don’t really want to see continue.
Also, my assumption is people put things in all caps as a means of giving emphasis to them. So, not only did you want to compare Tanger to Green (come on, be serious, that’s what you’re doing when you say you hope he doesn’t turn into the awful Caps D-man) but you want to make sure everyone sees it so you use the caps.
Geez, LC, I’m really not trying to argue with you here, just having a discussion. Like you said, that’s why we have these boards, right? If I thought you were an idiot and I had no respect for your opinion, I probably wouldn’t have cared enough to respond.

Oh I wasn’t pinning it on your or anything, I’m just saying that when the Pens Blog (tPB) goes public with a view or opinion it’s perceived as “the way it is” not the “way it might be” by a good majority of its readers. Again, it’s a credit to their reach and somewhat disappointing to think a lot of fans won’t formulate their own opinion before decided to just go with it.

I also wasn’t trying to say you were going with the crowd. It’s more the other way around. I had heard that stuff over the weekend, so maybe I was more willing to defend Tanger against your relatively harmless comment.
To me, it’s kind of like the myth of Letang not being able to hit the net. Enough people say it enough times and it is accepted as fact. Granted, last year Letang was a little off his career averages, but people are carrying the myth over to this season, and yet when you look at the numbers Letang is far more accurate than the rest of our d-men (based on shots that missed the net compared to total shots taken) except for GoGo, with whom he is tied. He is also more accurate than a fair number of our forwards despite the fact that his average shot distance is much greater than theirs. Even last year Letang’s accuracy was pretty much on par with the rest of our d-men, but his misses stuck out more I think because he took so many more shots (on coach’s orders) and because he happened to break Geno’s foot with an errant shot.

Hmmm.
I wouldn’t hate the points and on top of that, there are a lot of people around the league saying how his defensive play has become much more solid this year. Although, I would say, you could probably argue that they are pretty equal this year. Both improving defensively, as to be expected, and Tanger’s point production is growing as well.
by LightningCoach on Nov 15, 2010 2:00 PM EST up reply actions
I swore I didn’t want to derail this, but oh well, what’s done is done.
Green’s defense wasn’t as bad last season as people made it out to be. True, he might not be that good at the traditional forms of defense, but considering that the point of defense is to prevent goals (or, more accurately, prevent shots), Green was actually pretty decent at that simply through puck possession in the offensive zone, rather than breaking up plays and blocking shots in his own zone.
In fact, his defensive GVT last year was 5.3, better than any Penguins defenseman.
Derail away. That’s why I said above that arguing Green’s merits is a discussion unto itself. The caricature of Mike Green as the hapless defenseman is as near and dear to Pens fans as that of Crosby as the whiny diver is to Flyers fans.
Who knows…if Letang can keep up his current 77-point pace for the entire season, Pens fans can hope for him to become a guy who gives Green-like offense with even more solid play in his own zone.

Actually
it’s not. If he does turn into “Mike Green” where his offense is brilliant, but his D is suspect, that might not be such a bad thing. We have other defensive guys who can cover for him.
And it’s not like Letang has disappeared in the playoffs either. He’s put his game on another level during that time.

Seems like Letang has grown that is for sure. I wouldn’t trade him for anybody in the league right now I can tell you that. Also, on the Mike Green debate, PAYD hits the nail on the head. It just depends on where so much of the debate is coming from. I wouldn’t put much weight on someone saying Crosby is a whiner if I knew they were a Flyers fan. Of course they’re going to dig him. He’s not a Flyer! With that being said, Mike Green is one of the top D-men in the league, overall, fact of the matter is he is playing on an offensive-minded team as well and he’s in the NHL as a defensman. Guy has skills, can’t argue that. Plus they have Alzner, Carlson and Schultz to clean up the mess.

Solid start for Feds
3 goals, 6 assists, 9 points in 17 games and a +5. Good for him. Here’s hoping he reverts back to his -17 form from last season at least for tonight.
.
.
With all of the talk the last few weeks about how Bylsma will handle these goalies, tonight could be one of the toughest decisions so far. Now that you’ve got Fleury seemingly back on track, do you risk throwing him out there for a 3rd game in 4 nights? Plus we’re in the middle of this 11 games in 20 days stretch so you have to figure Johnson will see some action, and with Vancouver coming to town Wednesday maybe tonight is a good time to get Brent in there? I don’t know. I guess I’d go with Flower. Give him a chance to put a nice little stretch together here. We can always give him a rest Friday against the Canes.

I don’t think two games is any means to start saying Fleury is out of his rutt. Come on now. This isn’t me and my anti-Fleury sentiment talking, it’s just not being naive when viewing athletes and their slumps. Favre had a great game last week, but then sucked yesterday like he has for most of the season, just as a quick example.
But Vancouver is the stronger of the two teams, though I know they were struggling early in the season, but they still have more weapons. Go from there with who goes in net.
Possibly… I’m a fellow worrier but you can see how the D was reacting to MAF being in the net against the Thrashers. There was a lot more confidence & a lot more solidarity. Not so much of early on where they twitched at every shot because they worried about Flower dropping another soft one.
I think that MAF might be able to carry this. Then again, doesn’t matter who’s in the net, as long as we get the W. Besides, Friday’s not too long to wait for another crack for whoever sits out this game.

I agree to a certain extent in that if Fleury goes out tonight (should he get the start) and wets himself then few of his detractors would say “oh, it’s just one game. look at how well he played over the weekend”. What is funny, however, is that it only took two games at the beginning of the season for a lot of people to decide we needed to run him out of town.
Some choice comments during or after game 2 of the season vs Montreal:
Fleury deserves to be bashed.
I’m tired of him giving up goals like that. Bench his ass, maybe that will help him stay awake for an entire game.
All the goals he gives up are soft goals.

Well I have been traveling abroad and only got to watch the games last night (a bit bleary eyed I might add) so that’s why I havent been on the blog. I have bashed MAF last season and most of this, but I will give him props for the last two games as he has played better and I would start him again tonight. Johnson looked a little shaky against the Bruins and thought he gave up some soft goals; however that wasn’t his entire fault. And I am with the poster who said it doesn’t matter who plays in goal as long as we win. Also the whole team seems to be stepping up a little bit, obviously still some ?? around this team but think things are pointing towards a better showing then the first 20 games ( ok 18)

They won a few games at the beginning of the season and that skewed their expectations for the season. Before the season started they weren’t expected (by many) to make the playoffs. They’re at right now where they were projected to be, so I don’t understand this firing at all.
BTW, I think the Leafs are going through the same thing, early season success leading to inflated expectations.

Yeah. I remember thinking that it had to be unusual. I just looked up people with at least 24 goals and at most 6 assists in a season and got some interesting results. Seven of the eight player-seasons that turned up occurred before 1930. One of those, Joe Malone’s 1917-1918 season, came before the assist was an official stat, so I don’t know how accurate it is. The reason for the low amount of assists back then is that forward passing wasn’t allowed in the offensive zone until the 1929-1930 season.
The only other season on the list is Wayne Bianchin’s 1976-1977 season in which he had 28g, 6a. Guess who he played for? :)
Peter Bondra is the only person ever to score at least 30 goals and not get double digit assists.
That just screams “Thanks, but I’ll do it myself.”

It’s still pretty rare over the course of a whole season though. Only 8 forwards have gone a whole season without scoring a goal and getting at least 10 assists. The last to do it were Craig Adams and Vladimir Zharkov last year (Zharkov played 40 games).
Mike Ribeiro is doing it right now with 0g, 14a, which seems unbelievable.

Only 8 forwards have gone a whole season without scoring a goal and getting at least 10 assists.
I put in….
For single seasons, from 1987-88 to 2010-11, playing skater, requiring Goals <= 0 and Assists >= 10, sorted by descending Games Played.
and got 173 total players ending with Ribiero and Whitney (scored 3 goals yesterday) who has played just 14 games in 10-11. The top 5 all played 82 games and the top 16 played 80 games.
BTW, Barry Wilkins has the most assists in a season without a goal, his statline looks like this: 75gp,0g-27a-27pts,-1.
I just looked up the lines for the game, and Erik Christensen is their first line center. That should tell you just how terrible their centers are, and why the Rangers are so terrible.
Exactly. I said the same thing when I read a few weeks back that the Rangers were promoting him to 1C in the wake of Drury’s injury.
