Penguins Paparazzi: Practice @ Iceoplex: Before the Road-Trip West

Penguins Paparazzi:

Pre-Western Road Trip Practice @ Iceoplex - 11/2/2010

 Hello MY Beloved PensBurgh Friends!

I bring you all the newest edition of Penguins Paparazzi! Actually it’s more like a post and a half, covering 2 different days of practice. I was so excited to see the Guins scheduled 5 practices @ the Iceoplex this month. Thank goodness the Circus came to town and booted them out of the CEC. I am always happy to catch up with my favorite hockey team, and there is no better place to get an up-close look at the best team in the NHL, than the Iceoplex.

Star-divide

Injuries may have plagued our team, but today, things were looking up. Three injured players participated in practice today. Energy was high, and the boys were their usual jovial selves. Smiles all around!

From Penguins Pre-West-Road-Trip Practice

The lines in this practice:

Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Cooke-Comrie-Kennedy/Malkin
Talbot-Letestu-Asham
Rupp-Adams-Godard

Michalek-Orpik
Martin-Letang
Lovejoy-Engelland

  • Practice Post-Staal-Freak-Accident: As I was watching the fabulous Penguins practice this morning at the Iceoplex @ Southpointe, I realized our beloved Jordan Staal was undergoing surgery on his hand.  I sent him good vibrations through my mind… He was missed, and the lines were all jumbled accordingly.
  • Evgeni Malkin is back! It seems like he is knee-pain free. He was goofing off as usual smiling and skating around in a green practice jersey. He even tossed a birthday kid a practice puck.  After practice, Geno stopped to sign 4 autographs, then he zoomed away in his beautiful off-white Porsche per instruction from the rent-a-cop "Security Guard" leaving me, the birthday boy (With a sign that read "It’s my BIRTHDAY"), and 3 other fans in the dust without a signature. I can’t hold it against him, since I know they were off to the airport, but I did feel bad the kid kinda got dissed on his birthday…. But hey, he got a puck from the guy, right?!

From Penguins Pre-West-Road-Trip Practice

  • Zbynek Michalek has been sorely missed since his injury. He practiced with the team today. He didn’t seem to be holding back at all. He looked sharp, his shot was on, and he was skating like a champ!  Zibby was nice enough to stop and sign an autograph for me after practice! This was the first time meeting him, and I have to say, he seems more like your neighborhood pharmacist than a kick-ass defenseman. I say that in the most loving way possible. I think he is a great asset to the team, sorely missed when he was injured.

From Penguins Pre-West-Road-Trip Practice

  • After pulling out the stitches in his hand, and being absent from practice yesterday, the beautiful Kris Letang practiced with the team. He had the usual amount of hustle, running drills as normal. I like Kristopher because he is a hustler!  Every single practice he skates full force, always having little conversations with teammates. He smiles constantly, and is always working it.  Today was no exception to the normal; Kris was the last one off the ice.

From Penguins Pre-West-Road-Trip Practice

  • Alex Goligoski was missing from practice. Although I did see him all dressed up and airport ready as he was leaving the Iceoplex. I read on the Penguins website he would be ready to play Wednesday. My guess was Coach Dan just gave him the day off to rest.
  • A tale of two goalies: Marc-Andre Fleury & Brent Johnson were both in goal today. They switched as usual for different drills even worked out together for a bit with Max Talbot. Looks like Brent has some sweet new all black goalie pads. They make him look even taller, and bigger in front of the goal. There was no clear indication on which would be in goal tomorrow night. As much as I love MAF, I am happy Johnny is getting the praise he deserves. He is a great goalie, and we are super lucky to have him as our back-up. Both guys are super awesome to the fans, always stopping to sign autographs and pose for photos.

From Penguins Pre-West-Road-Trip Practice

  • Arron Asham was sporting the yellow practice jersey today, making him look like a shooting star skating with all that luxurious dark hair blowing in the breeze. I love watching this guy. The Philly-stink has wore off. And the more I learn about him, he has been in every team but one in the Eastern Conference, so his allegiance lies with the Penguins. We got to meet Arron for the first time today. For being such a tough guy, he is very softspoken. He’s one of the guys that will look you in the eye, I really really like him. Mucho respect.

From Penguins Pre-West-Road-Trip Practice

From Penguins Pre-West-Road-Trip Practice

  • Deryk Engelland is growing quite the set of handlebars. He looks like he could hop on a chopper and head twards Daytona Beach.  That choice in facial hair makes him look even tougher. Wonder if he is psyching himself into some brawl?! Hmmmm… I know we play his buddy BizNasty and his Phoenix Coyotes very soon…  I did get an autograph from the tough guy last week! He was on the phone, but he still stopped for a few of us fans that waited after practice. I noticed an odd contrast on his hands as he signed a puck for me… he’s married, and he has no skin on his knuckles. RESPECT THE HANDLEBARS… LOL Also, Seems like the SUPERSTAR Max Talbot,  is growing his own set of Handlebars… What is it with these hockey players and their facial hair!? It amuses me. =)

From Penguins Pre-West-Road-Trip Practice

From Penguins Pre-West-Road-Trip Practice

  • Mustache Boy Shootout – It came down to Matt Cooke vs. Eric Godard. Godsy scored and the rest of the team went wild… Hollering and hooting like Cookie had finally gotten his just rewards… But Matt protested! From what I could tell, he said he hadn’t gotten his "fair-UPS" … There must be a re-match! The two squared off again, Godsy scores, Cookie doesn't. Matt Cooke is November's Mustache Boy!

From Penguins Pre-West-Road-Trip Practice

  • I couldn’t stop looking at Duper (Pascal Dupuis)  and his current 'Magnam PI' Style mustache. I must have taken 50 photos of him today… haha… I love you Super Duper!!! Hopefully he shaves it before his wife has their baby, which is due any day now! Explaining to his kid why all their baby pictures look like 1970’s…
  • We also got to meet the sometimes-invisible Mike Comrie aka Mr. Hilary Duff after practice. He stopped for a group of us fans in a nice Mercedes G-Wagon. I wondered if it was the same Mercedes that TMZ reported he was being sued over… I doubted it, because he wasn’t exactly ‘laying low’… lol…  I also wondered if he had the "Lizzie Mcguire" soundtrack in his CD player. ;) He was kind to stop and sign, but he bi-passed the birthday boy and a few other kids as well, before pulling up to sign for us.

From Penguins Pre-West-Road-Trip Practice

  • Ben Lovejoy is proving to be quite the asset to the team. I am happy to see him staying in Pitttsburgh. Last week, we stayed after practice, and I had brought the Wilkes-Barre Ice time book with the Reverend/ Doctor Lovejoy on the cover. He drove up to the small group of us fans that were waiting. I squealed that I was so happy he stopped, handed him the WBS program, and he lit up like a Christmas tree. He looked at me all bright-eyed and say "You are?! I don’t hear that too often!" We reassured him that soon enough, he would be hearing that all the time. He was super happy to pose for a picture with me, and gave us a super awesome signature.

From Private Pittsburgh Penguins Practice

  • My moment of glory:  During that empty practice last week, Sidney Crosby, aka Sid THE MAN was one of the last players out of practice. There were literally 4 people waiting. This was my chance to have a moment with Sid. I immediately got uber nervous. He looked like a model with his suit on! The 3 people in front of me got a signature, and then it was my turn. I got my Olympic Sports Illustrated signed and asked him if he’d take a photo with me…. He said "Sure" and shot a cute little grin towards the camera.  VICTORY IS MINE! It was quite a change from the playoff atmosphere with tons of fans clawing at him! It took 2 years of trying, but I prevailed! Thanks Sid!

From Private Pittsburgh Penguins Practice

  • PS – I miss Big Dog. It’s not quite the same without Tangradi. I did notice the coaching staff working with Eric Godard in front of the net. I think they are trying to fill the HUGE gap that @EricTangradi left.
  • PSS - Thanks to the Pens Assistant Equipment guy who gave me Tyler Kennedy's broken stick! Whhhooo hooo... it's still sticky... haha

Thanks for posting! Love to get a fan’s insight on practice!
By the way, I’m making a gif of that Sid celebration and I will be posting it in the game thread every time he scores a goal.

Created some more

I wanted to do an epic one with Geno parents included, but the gif soup generator is really sensitive. Now, you’ve inspired me. I think I’m going to try and create one for every current player who’s scored a goal in a Pens uniform.
I’m adding a whole new dimension to the Game Threads.

It looks like Geno says “Boo-yah!” as he goes by, but that’s my English mind reading lips so I could be wrong.

Have fun with them in the thread but just be warned that too many gifs will really slow down the convo.

So, you may have to choose wisely. Quality over quantity, so to speak.

Just one gif per goal…would that be too much?
Hopefully, we don’t score 10, I guess.

Eh we can test it out I guess. Also has a lot to do with the number of comments too.

Just don’t blow up Pensburgh por favor. The SBN Overlords would be unhappy indeed.

The more and more I look at the Sid gif from the YouTube vid, the more it looks like TK or Dupuis.
Idk why.

LETANG FOR NORRIS.

Yeah, that was a tough one. Ultimately I had to go with Max, though I think he and Dupuis are probably neck and neck.

Thanks for sharing you practice experience with us. I think sometimes those practices are more fun than an actual game, especially at Southpointe.

I bet the shootout is the most fun – do Tanger and Sid usually win those right away or do they try different fancy shots for practice?

by tmpens on Nov 3, 2010 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

If I were them I’d try fancy shots out after I won the contest. Last thing you want to have to do is rock a mustache for a month.

It also goes without saying that if Fleury is in net, you want to be the first shooter.

Sid is usually one of the first to score, he likes to be one of the first… Then he can be rowdy for the other boys as they try and beat the stache… I have seen one month when he was in the last 3 or 4 players to score… Tanger with a close second… They like to finish early rather than sweat it out…The guys really have fun with this competition, a lot of fun to watch!

If Sid lost, they’d probably have to change his punishment to something other than “moustache boy”

Black goalie pads ...

… seem a bit weird. I suppose it would make it a bit more difficult for the opposition to find the puck, but wouldn’t it also make it a bit more difficult for the goalie and his teammates to find the puck?

(Also … nice post :))
