Tales of the Tape: Sidney Crosby Fights Matt Niskanen
We can pick and choose fights at will from last night's game but this one stands out especially. Dunman has been a bit busy as of late so I figured I would help out with a Tales of the Tape installment.

Win Sid
From the start it looked like he was going to lose, he took an early punch and then went down to a knee, but then Sid showed his balance, got back up, rag dolled Niskanen and then landed a few decent punches.
There is an article on the dallas news site about the fight… my favorite quote from it.
When asked if this is something that he could tell his grandkids about, Niskanen replied: ``That I got beat up by Sidney Crosby? I suppose not too many guys are in that club.’
``That I got beat up by Sidney Crosby?
At least he’s honest. Gotta give him props for thatl\.

Who voted draw?
Really? Come on, guy! That wasn’t even close. Sid controlled that fight from the beginning. His balance on skates is ridiculous. They lost the game and one thing is for sure, I’m just glad the kid didn’t break his hand. That’s the last thing they need.

Cry babies
don’t throw haymakers. Maybe that will silence some critics. People tend to forget the amount of time Sid puts in the gym.
you have to shoot to score goals
Some, but not many. Because he didn’t go well above weight class to fight Steve Ott, he’s still a wuss.
Wuss? Sid?
Come on now. If I am Danny B, I am telling him if you want to fight, that’s fine…but like you said, STICK to your weight class. It would not be smart for him to fight someone that does in on a daily basis.

I agree, and I’m sure Justin does as well, but he’s right. I visited the Stars blog and some were complaining that Sid didn’t fight someone bigger.

They’re both the same size.
But Crosby has fought more than Niskanen has, which is crazy to me, and Niskanen is about the least aggressive and physical guy on the Stars.
I think that was the point. I don’t care, really. I just think it’s hilarious that this one fight, in the midst of a game like that, is what everyone is talking about. Why do some tale of the tape of either Jamie Benn fight?

It’s the Sidney Crosby effect, friend.
Also, don’t see how you can complain about Crosby fighting a guy who rarely fights when your captain fights a small defenseman (with a broken hand) and Benn goes with Kunitz (who gets in 1 fight per season).
While Engelland, Rupp and Godard go unchallenged…
I know tempers boil of spur of the moment, but Dallas is in no position to make comments about who fought who last night.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
On the Morrow-Letang Fight
Letang started swashbuckling with Morrow and got in a few stick whacks before Morrow dropped the gloves.
One exchange is fine. But after the second stick whack, don’t you have to realize there’s a possibility the other guy is going ask you to drop the gloves?

I'll say this much
At least we’re not talking about how things escalated into a battle of cheap shots.
Disagreements were settled with fights and nobody got hurt.
Which, again, proves why you need fighting in the NHL.

Me...personally...
I have zero issues with Crosby fighting Niskanen. Hey…if Niskanen didn’t want to fight, don’t step up to the challenge. In fact, with the other fights, it’s the same thing.
Benn was a marked man after that first period and he responded when HE was challenged. I can guarantee you he did not go up to Kunitz and egg him on into a fight, that is not what Benn does.

Like Hooks said, it’s the Crosby effect. People want to see it, for good or bad. Having blogged for NBC last season I’m sure you can relate to that and the premium placed on players like him.
People did the exact same thing when Ovechkin drops mitts with Steve Downie and then Matt Bradley came flying in out of nowhere to spare his superstar. Some guys just get the spotlight more. And for a guy who will continuously be referenced for his “fight” with Valabik, it’s a Penguins blog’s civic duty to highlight his ability to actually fight.

Oh I know why it gets the attention it does. Don’t have a problem with it, actually.
I just find it amusing. It’s all good in the end and like Brandon Bibb said above, no one got hurt and that’s all I really care about in the end.

this team has NO HEART
except for Crosby
your captain drops the gloves
AND WINS the fight
and the team doesn’t respond
at all
weak
c’mon Pens
get your heads out of your arses
They're missing something
I’d much prefer to see Sid light the lamp than get into a light weight bout with Matt Niskanen. This is really the first game of the season that you knew early on it wasn’t going to be the Pens night. Too much inconsistency in assignments and in effort. At some point the coaching staff needs to be looked at for how well prepared they have the fellows.
There are a lot of guys playing subpar and unfortunately most of them are top name guys, MAF, Malkin to name a few. The Pens are definitely better than a .500 team but judging by their performance thus far, can I really say that? Get it together fellows, I will be cheering you on at Honda Center and want my money to be well spent!
Will the three people who voted for Niskanen and the 8 who voted for a draw please stand up and show yourselves?
Would love to hear the reasons why you voted that way.
What a nice response by Sid. Don’t like to see him fighting, but if he has to do it, I want it to be for this reason.

“They both had their helmets on so they both lose” = draw
“Niskanen got a couple punches in to start with and then all Crosby did was yank his jersey around” = Niskanen win
LOL
Seems like there are about 50 crazy people/irrational Cindy fans on here.

PS – Is anyone else having issues with the videos on the Penguins’ site or is it just me? I wanted to post Danny B’s presser but it’s not playing for me.

Damn.
Could you be a buddy ol pal and post the embed code from the vid into a video fanshot? I’ll toss up on the front page. Outcast requested some postgame presser vid last week and I’m sure others wouldn’t mind seeing it too.

Sid was just a goal and assist short of a Gordie Howe hat trick.

I was thinking about this last night: what’s the chances the Pens ice the lineup they did last night, get into 4 fights and combined the following names contribute to 0: Asham, Rupp, Godard, Engelland, Adams.
Hard to believe that.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
I’d have called you a madman for even suggesting the possibility.

Fight
Believe me I’m all about the fight, however I really do not like to see Crosby fight. I’d rather see him put the puck in the net and leave the fighting to some of the other boys…However he can handle himself quite nicely. Gotta give him props… Wish Johnson had as good a night as Crosby did in that Tussle…Ooouch
GO Sidney
Good to see Sid throw some haymakers so people dont think they can punk him!
