Pens Mobile App (In Arena Features Review)
Yea I am that late in writing this, as well as getting pictures up, we can't all be PaYD ;-)
This is pretty much a follow up of what Frank wrote up a few weeks ago on the Mobile Apps. I am really only going to focus on one part of the App, and that's the in arena option. Dateline, November 12th, my pregnant wife and I travel to Pittsburgh to see the Penguins of Pittsburgh take on the Lightning of Tampa Bay. I am really excited for a few reasons. For one it's my first trip to the still shiny new CEC. This is also my first time seeing the Lightning in person, my first chance to see players like Stamkos, St. Louis and Lecavalier (who was out). It's my weekend to have my yearly sometimes bi annually Number 2 seller "Pittsburgh Cheese steak" It's also my first chance to use the “In Arena aspect” of the Pens Mobile App. Let me tell you what my first impressions were:
(I totally should have taken screen shots that night)
Setup:
The Setup was easy. App was already downloaded and installed since it was first offered. While in the arena all I needed to was connect to the Pens Mobile via Wifi.
The Application Feel:
Short answer, it's good. It offers a lot of options, such as follow the play (LIVE/half second behind) camera angles which is cool, but why would I do that when the quality is so so on the phone, but so nice on the "Jumbotron" .
The Good:
The ability to see replay's of scoring chances, goals, and saves.
The Really Good:
Being able to see replays from about 4 different camera angles. It's pretty slick. Some may even be inclined to say it was pretty hot.
The Great:
This is a huge step in the right direction to be including in game content to fans while at the event. I've seen some types of pay offerings from companies trying to do this in the NFL.
The Bad:
This might just me being a pain but the quality of live or even replay wasn’t that great. I want something close to 780p 720p, but that's just my snobby self. I want it smooth and not choppy. It wasn't terrible, don't get me wrong, it was acceptable, but I want my replays in high def on my phone in the future.
Overall:
I give it a 4 pucks rating out of 5.
There is some room for improvement but more so for advancement. I enjoyed it and used it for most of the first period. If you have a phone capable of running the app at the arena I suggest firing it up!
The content expressed in fanposts does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the staff here at Pensburgh.com. FanPosts are opinions expressed by fans of various teams throughout the league but may be more Pittsburgh-centric for obvious reasons.

I was there that night- also or the first time. I couldn’t wait to have a Primanti Bros sandwich and also to check out the yinz cam etc. I liked it to for all the same reasons but found it cumbersome in the excitement of the game. I wish it somehow had the capability to work once you left the arena and could revisit the replays an’at

Nice review. I hope you also had plenty of the number 1 best seller while you were there.

Good review. I’ve been using this for a year or so, first on my Android phone and now on my iPhone, but have yet to go to a game to experience the in-game content. Nice to know there’s more to it than just News/Stats. Hoping I get the chance to try it out in the CEC someday soon.
*Also, I think you mean 720p instead of 780p for the resolution. That is, unless you meant 1080p and just combined them both. =)

And I think we’re past the point where wanting to see, well, anything in HD is snobby. It’s pretty much a requirement. If your Youtube video doesn’t give me an “HD” or “HIGH QUALITY” option, I’m going to turn my nose up a bit.
Ok, so maybe that was a little snobby.
But seriously, hockey was meant to be watched in HD more than any other sport without a doubt. So please give me my hockey with as many P’s as my TV/phone can handle.

Completely agree. In my area, Comcast has one HD Center Ice channel. I’m always so excited when I check the guide and see the Pens are on that channel (like tonight and Saturday), that is assuming they aren’t on Versus or NHL Network. This will make something like four or five games in a row I’ve been able to watch them in HD. I’m glad even Comcast in Maryland seems to favor the Pens!

I gave up on cable/Directv a few years ago despite loving Center Ice. Now I rely on the NHL Gamecenter feeds, and experience the same “blackouts” as you do when the games are on Versus or NHL Network- meaning I’m then relegated to watch the games on some fuzzy, pixelated ATDHE.net feed. That lack of clarity, coupled with FSN Pittsburgh’s inability to just show the wide, main action shot can make for a maddening 2.5 hours.
I’m in Maryland and I favor the Pens, too. Hey, it’s only right. Who really wants to ‘Rock The Red’ anyways? Umm, not me…

AGREED on the center ice HD thing. I miss my directTV all HD with the pens feed. But my husband in his infinite wisdom switched to comcast and center ice. (he wanted to get the phils games)
Got Crosby?

awesome
Will let you know what the video looks like over 4G as soon as I get a chance to try it out. Knew I bought an Evo for a reason!
P is for Latrobe.
When in the arena you are actually on the “Pens Mobile Wifi”. So you aren’t eating up your data usage on your plan.
"Let the Rabbits wear glasses"
Probably won’t get a very good connection either on the cell…

The quality isn’t bad on the Droid – after you find out that you have to turn on the Wi-Fi to get the CEC In arena module to work. No where on the app did I see that, but once I enabled it it worked fine in section 221.
I still would rather watch the on ice action and the Diamond Vision in the CEC however – but you do get to see the different replay views which is nice.
My experience this season with GCL is if your ISP and computer support it – and its available – you get HD. I’m watching the Rangers-Islanders {love the agony, BTW Eric Christensen is centering the 1st line} on the second monitor screen while I type this. It helps to be on a Core 7 machine, but you may want to make sure GCL is set to the adaptive rate if your HD is choppy on your monitor.
You can really tell when games are not done in HD on this system – MSG is notorious for non HD feeds.
It's always a great day or night for hockey - no matter the time or place!
