Penguins Paparazzi: HBO & Staal Edition

HELLO to all my lovely Pensburgh-ers!

I hope everyone is having a great holiday season, and are ready for an awesome 2011!! I was super excited about the Penguins practice at the Iceoplex @ Southpointe this morning! Like all of you, I have been enamored with the HBO series 24/7: Road to the Winter Classic. I was thrilled that there was another open practice where they would be filming. And apparently, so are a ton of other fans, because the turnout to watch practice was bigger than I have ever seen before. Standing room only, and even then it was 3 rows deep!

Even after a loss last night, with the help of a super loud crowd, ENERGY was super HIGH! Flower even peeked out the door before practice began to get a look at the huge group of fans! Good thing we came early, or little 5'2" me, would have been out of luck with the viewing area! With all the hype surrounding the Winter Classic, it was even better than the "playoff atmosphere" of years before! A great practice, and it was great to see all the families making the most of their holiday vacation, taking there kids to see the fabulous Pittsburgh Penguins up close & personal!

  • The Penguins were breaking in their Winter Classic pads, helmets and practice pants today! Blue was everywhere! I got my first look at Fleury's mask, which to me reminded me of a Steelers helmet. Everytime I looked at him, I kept having a flashback of 2009 when he skated out with the football helmet, waving his terrible towel! Check it out below! Flower also showed off his dancing skills fending off shots during the shootout with "Flair" as HBO would call it... spinning, twirling, and doing push up's while waiting for players to shoot!

  • Jordan Staal skated with the team today!! He didn't participate fully in the drills with the rest of the team, but he was skating around seemingly alright. He was all smiles today, acknowledging the crowd like I have never seen him do. He made his rounds talking and working with the coaches, but sat on the bench during line drills. You can tell he is antsy. His eagerness to get back in the game is so evident, he might as well be wearing a sign on his chest that reads PLEASE PUT ME IN COACH but don't read the fine print that says he still 'may' not be ready to return as soon as we all hope. I miss Staalsy. Can't wait for him to return.

  • We all know Sid is amazing. One of the best in the game today. He does unbelievable things all the time, every day, and probably in his sleep. I get crazy videos of him doing drills, and the YouTube views shoot through the roof. Here are 2 of the latest:

1: 12/10 Sidney Crosby Awesome Stickhandling

2: 12/13: Sidney Crosby shoots pucks right by my face!

Also, Sid's stache has taken on quite the personality. As much as we all love/hate it, the hairs on Sidney Crosby's upper lip are here to stay as long as the streak does. So, we must love it. Apparently my camera does, because it has the uncanny ability to focus on those whiskers. Lucky me. As shown here, today:

  • Ben Lovejoy scored his first NHL goal the other night. He also had his first fight, and took a puck to the face. All in all, he wears his wounds like a champion. He was in action today. Seemingly unaffected from the trauma to the face. I can't help feel sorry for Reverend Lovejoy... It looks awful. Check it out below:

  • Mike Rupp was the first out on the ice today. He was skating circles around the logo for a good 10 minutes before any of the other team showed up. He also lost shootout today, taking the title of juice boy, or sandwich boy, or whatever the punishment was today...

  • Eric Godard was missing from practice today. Probably recovering from the smackdown in the game last night.
  • HBO was all over the place filming B--roll footage and drills. It was a great atmosphere to be filming, because all the fans and kids that packed the stands. The Winter Classic is right around the corner and people are beyond excited. My boyfriend and I both wore our Winter Classic jerseys, my #58 Letang and his #87 Crosby. We were hoping to at least be spotted in the crowd. Then the crew came right up to us during practice and asked if they could film us cheering! Um, OF COURSE! Quality face time for us! Hopefully our moment to shine won't end up with @BizNasty2point0's clip, on the cutting room floor... but however it works out, we made it on film! Here is the moment right before the cameramen came up to us!

  • TK came out of the locker room early to work on his sticks. There were kids still on the ice from the youth hockey clinic that was before practice. All the kids at that end of the rink completely stopped what they were doing to gawk at Tyler. They were so excited, pointing and waving at him. TK must have thought it was cute, because he gave them an acknowledging nod and smile, which thrilled the young players... Precious.
