All-Star Voting Update: Fleury takes the lead
"Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury added 52,027 votes to his total, pushing him past the Canadiens' Carey Price and into the lead among goaltenders and third in the overall voting, behind teammates Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang."
"Crosby continues to score All-Star votes like he does points, picking up 58,990 votes this week to expand his lead on Toews for the No. 1 forward spot to 215,630."
"Toews has been second among forwards since the first voting results were released last month, but his hold on the No. 2 spot is shrinking as Malkin picks up steam. The Penguins forward received 47,027 votes this week, and now is just 18,314 votes behind the Blackhawks' captain."
"Malkin also managed to nearly quadruple his lead on the Lightning's Steven Stamkos for the third spot. Malkin led by 4,171 votes last week; this week that lead is 19,961 votes."
"Letang strengthened his lead for the top spot among defensemen, picking up 49,407 votes to give him 391,525 -- 87,887 votes ahead of Keith, the defending Norris Trophy winner."

It’s all fixed, I tell you. No way so many 87s can occur in the voting naturally.
PS. If I had written it, That extra 8 wouldn’t be there. I probably would’ve put in a 1 (71) or something

Haha you beat me to it.
Great to see Flower get recognized!
My Thoughts on the Pens & Twitter
"A player's game is a composition. Sometimes it's a line, sometimes a paragraph. Right now, Crosby's game is a novel." -Scott Burnside
Part of me thinks, good for him. The rest of me thinks this is as much of a joke as it was when we were all complaining about Habs fans a few years ago.
I wouldn’t think so… Flower’s had a solid month and a half.
Last year was just silly. Even from our end. Putting up Gonch despite him not playing at all that year?
The whole of last year’s selections was a crock.
Letestu for Calder! Letang for Norris! Staal for Selke!

Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.
Which goalie do you think should be the starter?
First 8 games: .853
Rest of season: .935
Total: .907
First 6 games: .984
Rest of season: .937
Total: .947
To me, it’s a no-brainer even if the goalies have been performing comparably to one another after the first tenth of the season. That first tenth counts, too.
You suppose Tim Thomas on the Pens would have those gaudy numbers?

Good question. I don’t think Tim Thomas on the Bruins will have those gaudy numbers throughout the whole season. Part of what’s propping him up, though, is his .957 SV% on the PK, and that’s exactly the sort of variable number that (as I’ve said before) makes even unlikely goalies win the occasional Vezina. What I mean by that is that no goalie is so good that he’s really a .957 on the PK, I mean, that’s ridiculous, but because there are so few shots on goal on the PK compared to even strength, goalies can occasionally wildly outperform expectations on the PK and thereby inflate their total SV%.
That said, Thomas has the best SV% in the league on high-quality shots, so who knows. Given the choice between:
a) statistical anomaly, or
b) a 36 year old goalie having a season for the ages, breaking records along the way
I’d likely pick option a, but then again Hasek did put up his .937 when he was 34, although that was his 6th straight season of leading the league in SV%. Who knows.
What I think, though, is that none of this matters to the all-star discussion. Does it really matter for that if Thomas wouldn’t do as well on the Pens, or the Islanders for that matter? I’d say it matters in only two areas: picking a Vezina/Hart winner, and determining the “true” monetary value of a player with respect to the salary cap. Other than that, it’s just a fun debate. Even on his own team it doesn’t matter so long as he outperforms the other goalie on that team.
It's a joke...
I mean, Tim Thomas is #4 on the list of goalies… Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Fleury, but the fact that Thomas isn’t leading this is just stupid. You could make a case that Fleury isn’t even a top 10 goalie.
Paul Martin is less than 3000 votes behind Byfuglien… for 9th place amoung defensemen… what a joke. They need to take away the voting from the fans.
Don’t worry too much. Thomas will definitely be in the game. He’s just losing the popularity contest at the moment.
I wouldn’t mind hearing your argument about Fleury not being a top 10 goalie. Even with the atrocious start, among goalies who have played more than half of their teams’ games he is still #5 in wins, #8 in GAA, #14 in SV% (only .007 out of the 4th spot).
Frankly, if the all-star picks were going to be based only on stats, why have the vote in the first place? The league wants the fans to feel “involved”.

He’s 16th in shot quality-neutral SV%, .008 out of #10, while GAA and W are misleading goalie stats. There, I made a case. (I don’t know if I agree with it or not. If you could convince me that his first eight games shouldn’t count then maybe…)
I don’t mind if the All-Star starters don’t mesh perfectly with my idea of who should be out there, but come on, Byfuglien and Thomas not even being close is a travesty. A trave-sham-mockery, if you will.
I said I wouldn’t mind hearing Stros Bro’s argument, which I’m guessing would not have included “shot quality-neutral” stats.

I said you could make a case
not that I would agree with it or was in the mood to do so… but it’s fairly obvious that Fleury isn’t the best goaltender in the league.
And being that I’m too lazy right now to try to make the case, I’ll let someone else do it for me…
Like this guy
Wow, I disagree with that list pretty vehemently. But the all-star game isn’t really about who the best are, it’s who’s been the best this year so far. Right? Or am I looking at this wrong?
You’re wrong. We should have done the all-star voting in July.

Yes, this is what the all star game "SHOULD" be about
and that’s my big problem here… It shouldn’t be a popularity contest.
MAF is a really good goalie and I’ve supported him even when he was terrible at the start of the season… but imagine where we would be if Johnson wasn’t around.. I mean, who knows if Fleury would have come out of his funk earlier but…
MAF is leading goalies because he’s on the Penguins and their popularity is probably at an all time high
