The Devils get Kovalchuk

Pierre Labrun reporting that Kovy's going to New Jersey. Didn't see that one coming, if it's true. Given the way that Brodeur seems to have the Pens number this year, probably bad news if the Devils and Pens meet in the playoffs. Of course, that depends on who NJ gives up in the trade, and how that might affect team chemistry. After all, trading for a superstar player late in the season is no guarantee of ultimate success in the Stanley Cup chase, as you guys found out a couple of years ago.

Still, given the Pens struggle against New Jersey this year so far, this has to be a bit worrisome to the Pittsburgh faithful.

Not to mention that they were taking a nice little nose dive which was helping the Pens overtake them in the standings. Sounds like the Pens really need to push for Whitney now, because LA will want him even more.

No matter what Atlanta gets in return

It’s not going to be worth it. For a franchise to lose it’s centerpiece and identity player, especially one as good as Kovy, it’s usually a blow not a lot of teams can get over.

No matter who Atlanta gets in return, I highly doubt that they’d ever be able to replace him. Curious to know how the Thrasher fanbase is taking it. May take a look at later to see.

I think the Devils are planning a last ditch rush at the cup. Brodeur’s no spring chicken and Kovy’s most likely a loaner. I believe in the Cros… We’ll still be cup champs yet.
