Steve Downie fined $1,000 for hit on Sidney Crosby
From Tampabay.com
The league has fined Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Steve Downie $1,000 for taking down Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby during Sunday's game. Downie said he spoke to league disciplinarian Colin Campbell on Tuesday morning. He said there will not be a suspension.
"He called it a dangerous play," Downie said.
Downie will not be punished any further for the incident. Downie makes, after bonuses, about $822,000 this season and Sunday's gamecheck for him was about $10,020, so they've essentially fined him 1/10 of a gamecheck for this dangerous play.

That’s some ridiculous. I’ll pony up a grand to have Downie’s “career” ended early on a dangrous play, anyday.

I agree 100%. I thought Ovie’s hit was a bad, but in my opinion wasn’t trying to harm. I thought the call on the ice was good, you need to protect the players, but the suspension was stupid. I think Downie’s is a perfect example of when a stiff suspension is needed. A malicious take down with the intent to injure should be a mandatory suspension in my opinion. The NHL needs to rethink what they have been doing here lately.

I agree with everything you said here, except for the part of about the suspension being stupid =]…it was a reckless hit by a reckless player.

After rewatching the video this morning, I stand by my original stance on the suspension. I am no AO fan, but I watching that at real speed, it looks to me like Ovie, just being Ovie, playing hard. Still means its a penalty, and I’m OK with the misconduct. I would agree its fine for a supension in the sense that AO is a repeat offender, but taken in a vacuum, I don’t think thats the case. AO obviously walks the edge, he plays hard, but he needs to realize when you are 6 ’ from the boards you can’t shoulder a guy.
A reckless, illegal hit should also be a mandatory suspension for repeat offenders, too;)

I guess it’s not so much the suspension as the inconsistency. Downie made a horrible play the same night and they don’t even schedule a hearing from what I’ve heard.
Ehh, I guess fine is better than nothing, right?

Oh man, I remember the days of yore when I would apply for jobs, go on a random interview or two, and be home by 3:00 west coast time. I’d pop open a few beers, watch the Pens, drink more beer, catch a west coast game, and call it a day. Wake up > Job Hunting > Hockey > Beer > Hockey > Beer > Sleep. Repeat for 8 months straight.
In some ways, much preferable to working 60 hours a week.

WOW
first time I saw the replay on that. BS – that was intentional. And the intent was injury. Thanks for the vid Ghostwalker
you can even make it sound worse and break it down by his time on ice…
Roughly $1.03 per second played in Sunday’s game.

Completely ridiculous. It was one of the dirtier plays I’ve ever seen, there’s absolutely no way you could even pretend that’s an accident, clear intent to injure. The guy has a checkered past to say the least. I have no idea how he’s not suspended at least 5 games and maybe more.

They COMPLETELY put the onus on Crosby and COMPLETELY absolve a scumbag like Steve Downie. I wonder how they would feel if Cooke or Orpik put that move on Steve Stamkos or Vinny L? Think they would be singing a different tune?
because it is always sid’s fault.
everything.
babies crying? global warming? totally sid’s fault.

Oh wow, that is a “unique” take over there on the whole Downie Crosby incident. Hell, even Capitals fans thought it was a terrible late play and totally Downies fault.
I agree totally about the stupidity of the average person. Horrifyingly, nearly 50% of people are even stupider!
They’re Tampa Bay fans. I’m not gonna speak for all of them, but I’d bet you 90% have a Hockey IQ of a doorknob.

Crazy comments by Lightening fantards in that article! Poor Downie was being picked on by the big bad refs and the NHL. Yeeeeah… I’ve watched a lot of hockey and I’ve never seen legs accidentally get tangled up like that. But I guess they don’t watch a lot of hockey and think it’s a common occurrence?

That play was obviously planned out and attacked in a way that he knew what he was doing. A lot more work than $1000 would dictate.
"Half the game is mental, the other half is being mental." - Jim McKenny
What he did should warrant strong discipline.
What if he had caused Crosby to tear a knee ligament??
Then a suspension is probably handed out due to the fact that injury plays a part in the final ruling.
If Downie wasn’t a marked man before, he sure as hell is now. Guys like this who deserve to have their careers ended by their own medicine.

Players with narcolepsy often find it difficult to stay awake for long periods of time, regardless of the circumstances. Narcolepsy can cause serious disruptions in your daily routine.
Some people mistakenly attribute symptoms of narcolepsy to depression, seizure disorders, fainting, simple lack of sleep, or other conditions that may cause abnormal sleep patterns.
Narcolepsy is a chronic condition that doesn’t go away completely. Although there’s no cure for narcolepsy, medications and lifestyle changes can help you manage the symptoms. And talking to others — family, friends, employer, teachers — can help you cope better with narcolepsy.

I can just see it: Sid finding out, thinking, “It’s good to know that justice has been served,” then looking for his cell phone in the cushions of his favorite couch at the Lemieux home and coming up with $1,000.

I’m absolutely baffled as to how Downie escaped suspension on that one. It was a pretty sickening incident and my first thought was that Sid was gone for the season. Thankfully I was wrong!
I’d like to throw a question out there though. Why was there no fight with Downie after that? I think the same question applies to the Cooke/Savard incident as well. As someone who has only been watching hockey seriously for the last two years, these situations don’t make a heck of a lot of sense to me. So I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Will $1000 even recuperate the salaries of the committee that met to decide how much to fine and/or suspend Downie?

I hate Sidney Crosby
That’s right, I’m a hater. I am one of the many who think he dives and whines a lot.
HOWEVER…I agree that a mere $1k isn’t enough in this case. No matter how you look at this, Downie should have been given a nice little 3-4 game “vacation.” Without pay, that would be a loss of what I make in a year. Sounds a little better than losing what he would make in 6 minutes of play (including bench/box time).
Ovie’s hit was a bad, but in my opinion wasn’t trying to harm. I thought the call on the ice was good, you need to protect the players, but the suspension was stupid.
As far as Ovie goes, I like the suspension. He needs to be taught to respect other players. He plays reckless and sometimes dirty (he leaves his feet on most hits that I’ve seen, including the one on Jagr in the Oly’s)
