Nickname for the Consol Energy Center
The Post-Gazette recently asked fans to come up with nicknames for the new arena. The ones they came up with are as follows:
I'm not sure I get the name "Rookery," but my favorites are The goal mine, Mario's House, and The house that Sid built. My favorite being the goal mine even though the Pens would probably be in Kansas City without Sid and Mario. Which one is your favourite? Got any other nicknames? The House that Sid Built (David Potter)
Mario's House (Zach Lancia)
The Castle (Fred Apple)
The Goal Mine (Paul Veltri).
The Coal Bin (Nate Natale).
The Coal Mine (Ryan Cetnarowski).
The Sol (Ray Reed).
Consol Energy Center (Aaron Pollock).
The Coal Bowl (Chris Heaton).
The Con (Dan Angelo).
The Fuse Box (Matthew Macklin).
Deux Igloo, Deux Igleux or Igleux Deux (Andy Reamer).
Lemieux's Con (George Pavlic).
The IceBox (Steven Titlebaum).
The Rookery (Matthew Cahalan).

Sadly, the sponsor name works just fine as a nickname
I’m thinking “The Console” might well end up what the place is called, even after that business no longer sponsors the name.

Except that it isn’t really console, it’s con-saul (like consolidated), though I wonder if it will ever really be pronounced correctly. Seems unlikely.

Rookery = nesting place for birds. It makes perfect sense, but it might be a little too obscure to be a decent nickname.
I settled on The Goal Mine if only because I’m a sucker for puns. I’m surprised “Power Plant” didn’t show up in the list, though.
That’d be my choice as well. Since it’s an energy company, the “Power Plant” makes sense. Same as our arena here, named after a largish phone company, is nicknamed the “Phone Booth”…
Let's go Caps!

I like Rookery but agree that it’s too obscure. I also like The House that Sid Built, but it’s too long for a nickname. I’d go with Icebox.
Icebox is good, because, well, it is kind of boxy, and of course there will be ice inside.

Yeah you’re right. The Igloo has to be the best arena nickname in the NHL.
Ok lol I get the rookery now..even though Penguins are flightless birds and I don’t believe they nest (oh well, they don’t live in Igloos either.)

I like that one
maybe “The Power Plant” ? The “power” angle is perfect, I think.

Nickname for Consol Energy Center
What about the ‘Golden Shaft’ (shaft as in ‘mining’) OR….the ‘Shock Box’??
voted “other”… thinking of The Sol (or the Soul?) depending on which one is closer to the actual pronunciation of “Console”. It’s short and catchy and something that all people can call it (unlike “The house that Sid build”, which I think would be used only in Pens blogs like this one)
You have to see it for yourself...
People will probably just start calling it “The Energy Center.” Saying “The Consol” doesn’t really sound right and I don’t think people will say it. What do you think sounds more natural?
“Hey, yinz guys goin down the energy center fer the game tonight?”
“Hey, yinz guys goin down the consol fer the game tonight?”
Being as Consol has the naming rights for the next 20 years we will probably be stuck with that unless someone comes up with a nickname that people will actually use (read: none of the above). I did vote for “The Con” though, because it’s the simplest of the choices, and doesn’t sound retarded like “The Sol.” Too many negative “Con” conotations though.
"Hey, yinz guys goin down the energy center fer the game tonight?"
I can hear my relatives saying that already.
I think a lot of Pittsburgh’ers will just call it the Igloo anyways. Like when no one really called it “Mellon Arena”, always just “Civic Arena”. I don’t think my uncle even knows what the “Mellon Arena” is, haha.
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
With the recent focus on the Pens and their “dirty” image, maybe call it the Sin Bin.

Coal Mine. One of the first suggestions I ever heard, coal is part of the local psyche, and it fits the sponsors name.

How about the Coke Palace?
For those that don’t get the steel city reference:
Coking coal
When used for many industrial processes, bituminous coal must first be “coked” to remove volatile components. Coking is achieved by heating the coal in the absence of oxygen, which drives off volatile hydrocarbons such as propane, benzene and other aromatic hydrocarbons, and some sulfur gases. This also drives off a considerable amount of the contained water of the bituminous coal.
Coking coal is used in the manufacture of steel, where carbon must be as volatile-free and ash-free as possible.
… Or, maybe Kevin Stevens will come out of retirement again and score 50??? Low blow? Oops, didn’t mean to throw in the hooker reference, too.
