Scouting potential 1st round playoff opponents

The Stanley Cup Playoffs begin soon, and with most teams having about 10-11 games remaining, the playoff picture is beginning to come in focus.  We know Washington will be the #1 seed, Buffalo is a pretty good bet to win the Northeast Division and be the #3 seed, and one of the Pittsburgh Penguins or New Jersey Devils will win the Atlantic Division (and snag the #2 spot) and the loser of that race will likely be in the #4 slot.

After the jump, let's look at the two scenarios for the Penguins and look at the handful of teams that could be the first round opponent.

Star-divide

Pittsburgh has 2 more points than New Jersey, but they have a game in hand, so it's basically a dead heat in the last ten games.  To keep things as simple as possible, let's look at the the standings:

It seems that the top four teams are locked in (Pittsburgh and New Jersey to possible flip #2/#4 seeds), but there's a lot more to be decided in the bottom half of the playoffs.  Everything's up for grabs, from positioning to the more important question of who's in and who's out.  For this debate, we'll assume any team in the top 10 of the Eastern Conference could bump up to the #7 seed.

Logo_philadelphia_flyers_medium

Prognosis: The Philadelphia Flyers have gotten stellar play out of goalie Michael Leighton, but he's injured for the next 8-10 weeks with a high ankle sprain.  With Ray Emery on the shelf too, the Flyers will turn to Brian Boucher for their playoffs hopes.  They currently sit in 5th, but with several teams right on their heels, it'll be a challenge for them to stay there.

Last ten games: 4-4-2

Pittsburgh's record against them:  4-1 (one more game left to be played)

The Good (for Pittsburgh): If the Flyers' fans still cringe thinking about Martin Biron in a playoff series against Pittsburgh, Brian Boucher can't inspire too much confidence.  Also the two straight playoff victories might have the Pens in Philly's pysche.

The Possible Hangup (for Pittsburgh): Any team with offensive players like Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Simon Gagne and defenders like Chris Pronger, Kimmo Timonen and Braydon Coburn has enough arrows to take down a higher seeded team.

 Logo_ottawa_senators_medium

Prognosis: A team in free fall, Ottawa's dipped down right in the pack since the Olympics break.  They've only scored 16 goals in the nine games in March (1.77 goals/game) and have been held to one goal or less in six of those nine games.  Things may not be clicking at the moment, but there's still time to get the ship righted.

Last ten games: 2-7-1

Pittsburgh's record against them:  2-2-0

The Good (for Pittsburgh):  The Penguins out-scored 12-3 in the two wins on the season, and Ottawa didn't have much an answer for the Pens offense.  Brian Elliott, the presumptive playoff goalie, has a grand total of 78 NHL games and 0 of them have come in post-season play.

The Possible Hangup (for Pittsburgh): Then again, Pittsburgh lost by a combined score of 10-2 in the two L's and didn't look too hot in those games, so maybe we'd have to wait and see.  As poor as Ottawa has looked on this little slide, they do have players like Mike Fisher, Anton Volchenkov that can play, lead and inspire in big moments.

 Logo_montreal_canadiens_medium

Prognosis: The opposite of Ottawa, Montreal is a team on an upswing lately, and they should be -- all of the teams they've played since the Olympics ended are all either bubble or non-playoff bound teams (except for San Jose, whom Montreal lost to 4-1).  This week will be a crucial one: The Habs play four games, two of them against Eastern Conference leaders in Buffalo and Jersey.

Last ten games: 7-2-1

Pittsburgh's record against them:  3-1-0

The Good (for Pittsburgh):  Divide and conquer: Carey Price hasn't seen game action since giving up three goals in the first period of a game on March 7th.  Don't think that if the Pens can sneak a few by Halak that the media, fans and maybe even some players might be wondering just who the starting goalie should be.

The Possible Hangup (for Pittsburgh): Montreal has the 2nd best power play in the league, and Halak hasn't stumbled yet.

 Logo_boston_bruins_medium

Prognosis: They've had goal scoring woes all season, and post-Olympics the Boston Bruins have scored 2 or fewer goals in six of their eleven games, and only scored more than three goals on two occasions.  As has been well reminded, they're without the services of arguably their most skilled forward in Marc Savard.  If Boston makes it, they're going to have to figure out a way to generate some offense.

Last ten games: 5-4-1

Pittsburgh's record against them:  3-1-0

The Good (for Pittsburgh):  Boston's lack of goal scoring (1 goal in two games versus Pittsburgh in March) make a potential playoff matchup seemingly a favorable one for Pittsburgh.

The Possible Hangup (for Pittsburgh): The B's have given up 24 less goals on the season than the Penguins, so they may not be scoring, but they're used to playing defense and low-scoring games; two tenets of playoff hockey.  Zdeno Chara is a big minute eater that presents matchup problems.

Logo_atlanta_thrashers_medium

Prognosis: The little team that could, despite trading away superstar winger Ilya Kovalchuk, the Atlanta Thrashers have shown no quit and continue chugging along.  They've gotten timely goaltending from Ondrej Pavalec and Johan Hedberg, and somewhat quietly Nikolai Antropov has put up career high numbers.  No one's betting on Atlanta or really giving them much attention, and they probably wouldn't have it any other way.

Last ten games: 5-4-1

Pittsburgh's record against them:  2-0-0 (two more games to be played)

The Good (for Pittsburgh):  Dating back to years past, Pittsburgh has a very good record against the Thrashers.  There's also ATL's huge lack of playoff experience, individually and collectively as a franchise.  Also, as a team playing catchup in the playoff chase, if they make the post-season, it could be one of those "happy to be there" moments that leaves them with little gas in the tank.

The Possible Hangup (for Pittsburgh): That Atlanta, who's not "supposed" to make the playoffs, might not know that they're not "supposed" to win.  The team with nothing to lose and playing with house money can be a dangerous opponent.

 Logo_new_york_rangers_medium

Prognosis: The Rangers are a tough team to figure out; one night they'll look like a surefire playoff bound team, the following night they barely look like they belong on the same rink as a NHL team.  Their inconsistency is maddening: they have the worst home record in the East (15-17-6), stud forward Marian Gaborik has 37 goals, only one other player has more than 37 points (that would be Vinny Prospal).

Last ten games: 3-5-2

Pittsburgh's record against them:  5-0-1

The Good (for Pittsburgh):  The Pens have had a lot of success at getting to Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers defense, scoring 27 goals in the six games of the season seres (4.5 per game).

The Possible Hangup (for Pittsburgh): Gaborik takes flight, Lundqvist gets back to his Kingly days, Sean Avery pesters everyone in sight.  It wouldn't be pretty.

Most likely, one of those logos will be Pittsburgh's first round opponents, barring a tremendous collapse or rally by various teams out there.  Anyone you'd like to see the Pens avoid?  Any teams that are ripe for the picking or a potentially "easy" slide to the second round?

How much will these last 10 games tell the future?

Of the 10 teams listed, Boston and New York will be the ones left off the dance card come playoff time. Boston had difficulty scoring goals when Savard was in the lineup, and now? Goaltending is also questionable for them. For a team that is so good defensively, Thomas has been horrible and Rask has started showing signs of faltering as well. I can’t help but remember the fans chanting “We want it! We want it!” during overtime of Game 7 versus the Hurricanes just to have their hearts ripped out by Scott Walker. A similar thing occurred in the most recent game against the Penguins. They came in united hatred of Matt Cooke just to be betrayed by their team. The fans are quickly losing faith and that doesn’t reflect well on the team.
New York is just pathetic. Drury’s comments on the immaturity of the team are a perfect example. When you’re quiet captain calls you out to the media, there has to be genuine disharmony in the locker room. What we see on the ice is more a reflection on the coach than anything. Tortorella’s habit of losing his cool and throwing hissy fits is mirrored by his players with detrimental effect. Teams like this simply don’t win Stanley Cups.

I have no doubt the Pens’ problem with consistency with evaporate come the playoffs because that’s what I’ve learned to expect from them. Once they hit that stride, I like their chances against anyone.

I’d like to see one of the oft neglected Southeast teams to sneak into that final 8th spot just to make things interesting. I’d love the story to be Carolina (finally finding their game from last season) taking out the Caps or Atlanta (who are playing better as a team without Kovalchuk) taking out the Devils.

I love the prospect of taking down Philly 3 years in a row.

Dont forget about Buffalo

The Pens/Devils aren’t a lock for the number 2 spot. The sabres have 88 points (2 behind pens) and have a game in hand on us too. This week is huge for us. The red wings are fighting for their playoff lives and washington has by far the best record in the league. And don’t forget that the Flyers are struggling right now and are fighting for position. Plus we are rivals so that just adds to the intensity. This whole week will be like playoff hockey. Also the Toronto game on Sunday scares me. Will they have enough left in the tank if the philly game wares them down (should be a very physical game…. it always is!) This week will decide our seed for the playoffs. Also we actually need to root for the flyers when the play the devils this week lol.

Good call, it’s definitely conceivable that Buffalo could take #2 and the ATL winner drops to the #3 seed.

Still doesn’t change the info though, any of the teams listed could be the #6 seed as easily as they could be the #7 seed, really.

i can’t wait for this post season. if there’s any upside to the fact that the pens aren’t exactly at the top of their game, it’s that they can sneak into the playoffs under the radar. not that you’ve got long to find your game in the playoffs, but i’m confident that the pens experience will take over and they’ll right the ship soon. i’ll be sporting my pens jersey and cup champs hat at joe louis arena tomorrow. any praying people out there, say one for my safety haha the D isn’t the most hospitable of places

by Chez on Mar 22, 2010 1:26 AM EDT reply actions

In my opinion, New York is out. They don’t have it to make it to the playoffs, and if they do, they’re done in the first round. The same for Boston, I just don’t see it happening. The B’s are destined to be injured this year, and they just don’t have the offense to do anything.

As for the Flyers, I think they could have been a worthy another opponent, but now with even more woes in between the pipes, I don’t see it happening at all for them. Other wise any one of those teams I think can really surprise everyone, especially Atlanta. Ilya who?

Since we’re on the topic, out West, I don’t think the Hawks have what it takes either, especially with their goaltending which is just horrendous. I’m sick of hearing about how they are contenders. Get as many points you want, but you can’t get far without good goalies, and ones with playoff experience at that.

I think NY’s in better shape than Boston. Gaborik’s a game changer, Lundqvist is among the best goalie in the league when he’s playing well, and shockingly guys like Jokinen and Christensen are playing pretty well and putting up some points lately.

They might not go anywhere when they get there, but I’d like the Rangers chances of making the playoffs a lot better than I like the Bruins

Oof, I didn’t realize how far behind the 8-ball the Rangers have dug themselves.

Well we now know the Flyers wont have Carter for 3-4 weeks… I see them dropping WAY down… Too bad they didn’t trade him for Vokoun when they had the chance.

by biggoron on Mar 22, 2010 1:35 PM EDT reply actions

Yea that stings, with a broken foot, 3 weeks seems pretty optimistic. Im glad they didnt get Vokoun though. Hes one of the top goalies in the league year after year, and if he got on a team that didnt give up 50 shots every single night he’d be a Vezina winner.

Predictions

Rangers are hosed. Down 4 points to Boston with 10 games to play and the Bruins have a game in hand. If NY plays their last 10 games the way they played their previous 10 games (3-5-2) then Boston would have to go 2-9 down the stretch. Ain’t happening. Out of the 3 way tie for fifth, Montreal is playing the best so they’ll secure the #5 spot. Philly is treading water around .500 so they’ll come out 6th. Ottawa is in a free fall and the only thing that keeps them in the playoffs is that they’re far enough ahead of Atlanta, who will choke down the stretch.

Anyway I say it goes:
1. Washington – 120 points
2. Pittsburgh – 105 points
3. Buffalo – 102 points
4. New Jersey – 104 points
5. Montreal – 93 points
6. Philadelphia – 90 points
7. Boston – 86 points
8. Ottawa – 85 points

1st Round
Washington vs. Ottawa – Caps in 4
Pens vs. Boston – Pens in 5
Buffalo vs. Philly – Sabres in 6
New Jersey vs. Monteal – Montreal in 7

Divisional
Washington vs. Montreal – Caps in 7
Pens vs. Buffalo – Pens in 6

Conf Finals
Washington vs. Pens – Pens in 7

It’s funny that by finishing 2-4 the Pens basically erase any chance of drawing a cinderella Carolina team, one which I’ll be losing sleep over the prospect of facing until they’re mathematically eliminated.
Pens should roll over any of those teams. If any will pose a challenge, Philadelphia with depth at F/D and Montreal with great speed and special teams. But Pittsburgh will still steamroll both of them, I think.

Was watching the flyers thrashers last night because that’s all I get at my house. This is the order Bill Clement have the flyers play in the first round if he could pick:
1.New Jersey
2.Buffalo
3.Washington
4.Pittsburgh
It would be nice to have the flyers knock off the devils and then the penguins knock off the flyers for the 3rd year in a row

by stoopidtom on Mar 22, 2010 2:35 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Jeff Carter got hurt though

So that could mean the flyers may not even make the playoffs. Such a shame because I would love if the Penguins could get a chance to knock them out again.

by gingerredboy on Mar 22, 2010 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

They might still make it, but loose in the first round.

by nut1976 on Mar 22, 2010 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

With the Carter injury things turn for the worse in Philly and they might struggle to hold on. I see them, Boston and Atlanta batting it out for the final 2 spots.

Very important, I think, is to get that 2nd seed and avoid a possible clash with the Caps in the 2nd round. I believe the Pens should have no problems progressing against any of the above-mentioned teams.

You have to see it for yourself...
