Evgeni Malkin OUT for tonight's game versus Washington
From the PG:
Center Evgeni Malkin is not participating in the Penguins' game-day skate at the Verizon Center, and is not expected to play when they face the Washington Capitals there at 7:08 tonight.
Malkin has missed three of the past four games because of a bruised right foot
A big, but not unexpected loss for tonight, but better to get him all healed up for the stretch run. Obviously this puts a lot of pressure on centers Sidney Crosby and Jordan Staal to eat up a lot of minutes and produce some offense.
The Caps, ironically, also have a case of "friendly fire", one of their better players in Brooks Laich is out tonight after being hit in the face by a puck from John Carlson during practice yesterday. It's not quite like losing an Art Ross winner, but Washington's feeling the pain a little bit too.

blah... not good
we really lacked punch against Detroit and now without Geno again… let’s hope some guys step up and provide some support for Sid
You have to see it for yourself...
Punchless is a perfect way to describe it.
Guerin doesn’t look good with Staal and Ponikarovsky hasn’t really gotten on track either. We
ll see how it goes tonight, I suppose

Not having our regular line setups really hurt us against Detroit. I think we’ll stand a better chance against Washington(They have nowhere near the defensive ability that the Wings do), but it’s still a loss.
This does not look good for tonight. The Pens are 3-7 without Geno this year. More importantly Crosby has no goals and 3 assists in those ten games. I know there were other injuries and circumstances during those 10, but its still not a good stat line. I expect Crosby to break out of that tonight with a goal, but I think the Pens fall short again tonight, sorry guys.
I think while genos out we should throw Poni on Sids wing for a game, tonight would be good since the caps are trash on defense, and see what happens. Maybe Sid-poni-dupuis/koon, maybe Poni will be a better fit with sid than geno can’t hurt to try.
Lines in morning skate were
Poni-Crosby-Dupuis
Kunitz-Staal-Guerin
Cooke-Kennedy-Feds
Rupp-Adams-Talbot

Gaping hole without Malkin.
Hopefully the Pens try to clamp down tonight and can force the high-flying Caps into a tight checking, low scoring game. Yeah, good luck with that boys.

Yea that 3 center model doesnt work so well when your down to 2.
I think Staal and Kunitz worked pretty well together in the limited opportunities theyve had. Lets hope that continues tonight because they are going to need some production out of that line. Im hoping I dont see any Fedotenko on the PP tonight, either one. Dupuis earned a shot. I dont like putting Staal on the 1st PP in Genos absense that turns the 2nd PP to garbage.

Pens have the better goalie and let in more goals but the Caps D is trash?
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
I don’t know if you know this but goalies and defencemen are different, it was confusing for me at first but the best way to tell them apart is the bigger stick and the giant glove on the other hand.
Awwwww snap. I don’t know if you know this, but a superior goalie can hide mistakes of an inferior defense. And a superior defense can protect an inferior goalie. If the Pens have the better goalie, but let in more goals, then what follows…
/come on, you’ll get there

I’m starting to think it’s more than just a bruise…

Twisting doesn’t cause bruises, generally. My guess is that this is probably going to be a week or two more. I’ll see if I can poke around and find something.
True, but if not a break it could still be a strain/sprain/tear. If we’re comparing the severity, I’d say a muscle or ligament issue may be easier to handle than a break (and recover from for that matter) but none of the above stands as a desired prognosis.

Just got word back from Will Carroll. He’s saying that it actually does read like a bruise, but there’s not much of a difference between a bruise and a break when it comes to feet.
In other words (my opinion), it might be awhile.
But by the same token, a foot injury is relatively easier to play through if you really have to. These games don’t matter a ton for PIT (The ATL would be nice, but 4th seed won’t be the end of the world for you all). When the playoffs come around he’ll be fine. If you can get your foot in the skate, you can generally play. The Caps had two guys play through broken feet last year, and I’ve heard several ridiculous stories of guys playing through feet injuries (Doug Gilmour is probably the biggest example, had both feet shaved down on the sides and kept playing). Datsyuk’s foot was so bad he couldn’t even get his foot in his skate, but it doesn’t look like Malkin is at that point.

Laich also will have his consecutive games streak, currently at 257 games, ended :(
On one hand, I like that Geno out will give the Caps a better chance to win. On the other hand, I wanted to see how the Caps’ new D will play a full PIT lineup. Looks like we’ll have to wait until later to see.

You didn’t get called up to the big leagues to give half effort.

Japers’ Rink might have to pick you up on waivers just for revenge over the whole CBo thing. Can you hit an empty net?

Just for reference, the puck hit the crossbar and then his face. It wasn’t a straight slapshot blasted off his face, thank God.

Yeah, I knew it went of the crossbar, just trying to make it sound a little more gnarly for old Brooks. He is the 2nd best Brooks in the league, after all.

Also the second dirtiest Brooks in the league (how did nobody mention him in the “Are the Pens dirty?” post?). He had X-rays on his orbital bone. Had to be pretty bad.

Still one hell of a streak, if I do say so myself.

That’s a bummer for Laich. It’s probably eating him up inside to miss this one.
