2010 NHL Trade Deadline open thread
This day is often considered "Hockey Christmas." It can be crazy, fun, heartbreaking and promising all in the span of about four hours. Keeping with tradition here since the launch of the blog, I now bring you Pensburgh's third annual trade deadline open thread.
Monday morning we caught a glimpse of Ray Shero at work once again when he traded away a second round pick for Jordan Leopold. Last night, just as the Pens and Sabres wrapped things up, we found out the Pens acquired Alexei Ponikarovsky from the Leafs in exchange for Martin Skoula and Luca Caputi.
So does this mean a slow trade deadline day? Who knows.
These are the fun things worth talking about in the comments. I'd also like to mention that any sort of Penguins move will be worthy of its own post. Otherwise, we'll keep moves from the other 29 teams within the comments, unless there is just a ridiculous move that somehow poses as a counter to Pittsburgh (for example, if the Devils traded for Kovalchuk today I'd address it).
With that said, any sort of lead or rumor you come across - outside of anything "reported" on Hockey Buzz - feel free to add it to the mix. Toss on the link if possible and let the convo go from there.
It's pretty exciting to follow today so I hope you all consider hanging out here for a good part of the day.
Now, let's see what the Pens and the rest of the league have in store before the 3:00 deadline.

Yeah buddy. But this is the first trade deadline that twitter is a big deal, I wonder if Twitter will trump it.
I also shudder to think how many Canadian journalists will be reporting the same thing and how many people will be RT’ing it. That’s kind of annoying when the news is out there and people just retweet commonly followed people

Haha, no not you specifically.

it was on NHL network and now it’s not……..guess I’ll rely on nhl.com because tsn.ca is telling me “Canada only” when I click to watch
Pens
anyone think we’ll make some smaller moves to try and pad some draft picks? Now that we have Poni we technically have 2 extra forwards (when everyone is healthy)
I was thinking about that last night….well at least the extra forwards…
It seems like you have to fill the last line with….Rupp, Adams, Dupper, Supastar, and Godzilla….
IMO, Goddard is obviously an odd man out, especially since there is virtually no fighting in the playoffs….
But I think Talbot is as well….
Adams is a right handed Center, and provides value there, Rupp adds toughness and is a “Noted” Goal Scorer. Dupuis has 14 goals, and adds defensive responsibility.
I’d hate to see Talbot go, but he might just be riding the bench/club box unless there is an injury-or maybe get moved?
any other thoughts?
I’d say Fedotenko and Talbot are kind of in limbo…Neither has played well this season (for different reasons) and both could be worth hanging onto for these playoffs, but likely in a different role.
I think the Pens will foolishly keep Adams in his 4th C job, so where does that peg Talbot? As a 4th line W that gets maybe an occasional chance to play with one of the big boys?
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
Dupuis – absolutely no way you can take him out of the lineup. he can bounce around on any line on the team
Rupp – his goal scoring abilities went away mysteriously, but he still brings a lot to a 4th line
Adams – right handed center, penalty killer, faceoff winner – enough said
Goddard – injured at the moment and will be scratched come playoff time. seems like he’s out of the picture for the rest of the season
Talbot – has done nothing at all this season. some of the minor leaguers have more goals than him. he was supposed to be Malkin’s winger this season while netting upwards of 20 goals. what happened to that notion? I’ve said this earlier on in the season and it wasn’t received well at all, but Talbot has no place on this team any longer. He’s a 3rd line player and when you evaluate our 3rd line there is no room for him. And now when you have a 4th line that consists of Rupp, Adams, and Dupuis, all of which are 10+ goal scorers with exception to Adams, what spot is left for Talbot? I see no room left for him as a Pittsburgh Penguin.
Adams is winning 42.7% of his faceoffs this season. That’s dreadful. Even Malkin’s winning 43%!
I realize he adds something by being right-handed, but he’s not winning many
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
Can’t really argue against numbers. What would you want your 4th line center’s faceoff % to be?
Adams and Talbot have to be in the same boat, but I give preference to Adams because his salary is about half of Talbot’s and yet they both produce around the same results (at least this year they have)
Teams like the Caps, Lightning, Sharks, Thrashers and others have 4th line centers with FO winning % in the range of 60%… that’s basicly the one thing that they’re good at… but it’s a very useful thing.
I have to say I’d expect a defensive specialist centerman (if Adams fills that bill) to win more than 50%…
You have to see it for yourself...
We all love to talk lines, what you guys think about this?
Kunitz-Crosby-Guerin
Dupuis-Malkin-Ponikarovsky
Cooke-Staal-TK
Fedotenko-Talbot-Rupp
I realize the Pens WILL use Adams, but that’s how I’d set it up. Dupuis has been great all-around this season and deserves the top 6 minutes, IMO
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
Here's my question to you
If Fedotenko can’t score with a world class player like Evgeni Malkin as his center, how is he going to do it with Maxime Talbot and Mike Rupp?
Putting him on the 4th line doesn’t make much sense to me. However, as we all know, things like this change from game to game and shift to shift.
That’s a good question. Fedotenko’s only got 9 goals this season and he’s been basically attached at the hip to Malkin, how’s he gonna score without him?
Feds plays well away from the puck, can chew up some minutes without making mistakes, and like you said they could be flexible and try to shift Crosby/Malkin down there occasionally. Who knows.
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
Now that I think about it
I think Ruslan does do pretty well when he’s in a decreased role. Maybe Malkin just rags the puck too much for Ruslan’s style of play.
Feds is quite streaky, as we all now, and I think HCDB will try to use the fact that they’re close with Poni to give him a spark… so I’d expect to see a russian-speaking of Fedotenko-Malkin-Ponikarovsky second line.
I think Adams can be benched a couple of games to give Max a chance to get something going, but if he doesn’t start playing better, he’ll be the odd man man out come playoff time.
You have to see it for yourself...
Is it possible the Pen's do something crazy
Kunitz-Crosby-Guerin
Malkin-Staal-Ponikarovsky
Cooke-Talbot-TK
Fedotenko-Rupp-Dupuis
?
It is possible, but I think they moved Malkin to the wing when Kunitz was hurt and before Poni because they didn’t have much skill on the wing. Now it’s a different story.
Come playoff time I think you want the traditional Staal/Cooke/TK 3rd line out there.
wouldn’t be surprised if they do this in a pinch though

No Christmas in Detroit this trade day. Red Wings say it’s highly likely they won’t do anything big or small.
hi ya all. do you think there will be any other moves for the pens? probably not big ones

tis what we are discussing right now. who would you move out of adams or talbot? see discussion above for details.
I’m not sure that they’d move either, but one of them might be out of the lineup (barring injuries)

Yea neither will get traded because what are they even gonna get in return? Nada. I guess when I said “move” I meant “benched” in some way..

Go ahead and do it washington…Not like defense wins championships or anything..
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
Caps already have a great offense, they need a guy like Hamhuis, I would think.
Rumors don’t always come true, but between AO, Semin, Knuble, Fleischmann/Laich the Caps have skill in wing. Whitney seems redundant.
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
I wonder how happy they are with their goaltending situation also..
You have to see it for yourself...
The Caps could easily give up a prospect or two and player like Fehr/Fleischmann.
The real question is: do they want to.
Shero’s never been afraid to pull the trigger, but their GM has delayed and favored keeping the entire core intact for 3-4 years now.
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
Fehr/Fleischmann are future stars in this league IMO. caps might not be able to afford them next year anyway. i see them going during the draft not before
Playoff Beard Version 7.0.....
thats what i’m thinking. if the caps do make a move they will move out some salary to make room for Nicklas Backstrom large contract next season.
Playoff Beard Version 7.0.....
By dropping Nylander, they have enough cap room to accomendate Backstrom without doing any moves.
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
also they have to trade Nylander don’t they. if they wave him and no one takes him that money still accounts toward the cap. or am i wrong
Playoff Beard Version 7.0.....
Gonchar/Letang are getting most the attention, but that’ll be a big deal too.
Cooke will probably be looking for a 3-4 year deal, this could be his last chance to make some money and sign a contract while he’s in/close to his prime.
Ideally, he’d sign a two year deal for about what he makes now, but I don’t know how realistic that is.
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
I already consider him gone.
The reality of playing well with Jordan Staal is that someone will overpay. He was great while here, but I just don’t see him staying.
Can anyone summarize what’s said once he’s done?
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
- Talked about scoring the GWG for Canada
- He wasn’t nervous in OT
- No progress on finding his equipment. Got his mouth guard back though
- Thinks Shero made “really good” moves that will add depth to the team
- Poni is a big strong guy with good hands that can play in any situation (his analysis on Poni)
- Doesn’t mind rotating the wingers these past seasons
- Never dreamed of winning the cup/gold within a 1 year period
- He IS exhausted
- Felt like playing 4 game 7’s leading up to the/including the gold medal game
/
Awesome thanks.
-He IS exhausted
He only played 17 minutes last night and Sid’s too competitive to sit out a night, but they keep got to limit his minutes so he can re-charge a little for the playoffs.

definitely especially one that either: A) not pick up a man or B) let his man blow right by him….guess those are pretty much one in the same so both. I actually laughed when I read that Tweet.

Morris
How come the Bruins trade away a legit top 4 Dman in Morris for only a 4th rounder in 2011?!?
I can see they’re trying to shed some salary, but for virtually nothing in return… strange

Bob McKenzie:Capitals are interested in adding a player with a Cup ring and/or playoff experience as a stabilizing influence. Ray Whitney fits the bill.
So they are concerned…. I had wondered what the Caps organization was thinking. Seems like they want a Billy G type of guy, but if they get Whitney that’ll be great for them.
871
They don’t need any offensive help at all. If their gonna do anything it should be on defense. They already have a Billy G type guy in Knuble, who is a lot better then Guerin I think.

damn really?
why do they want Carter?…they need D…Vokoun is great, but when you give up 35+ shots a game his W-L isn’t going to be very good. This is especially so since they traded Leopold.
871
And reportedly shopping Seidenberg.
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
It’s basically the most public announcement they can make in terms of “rebuilding” without actually saying it. If they dish Vokoun it’s pretty obvious they are packing it in for the season and looking forward to the draft.

Well, good for him I guess. At least he’s on a competitor now

I dunno. I can’t see how he helps much, but I guess in a neutral zone trap scheme he doesn’t have to rely on speedy backchecking all that much. He could be a decent fit for now.

Skoula should be fine. The only time devils defensemen skate forward is to go to the bench.

Hadn’t seen this minor deal posted here: Blues get D’Agostini for prospect from MTL
I always like D’Agostini, he seemed like a young, young, exciting and talented guy. Guess he’s not having that great season.
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
So the Flyers are looking for a goalie today. Most likely at least. Huet? Roloson? Thoughts?
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
If they don’t get Vokoun, I’m not worried.
Huet’s a classic playoff choker and he hasn’t even looked that great this reg. season.
Roloson’s good, but 40 years old. I think the Pens would systematically break him down in a playoff series if they threw the usual 35-40 shots a night at him
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
I have a feeling the Islanders and Blackhawks will be talking but that could also just be a ploy for either team to build a demand for their guys.

Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
Holy schnikies this is a lot to catch up with, but I am going to try and be productive here.
First, I think the Pens might be done dealing. They got Leo, a D-man, which we needed, and they got a winger, Poni, which we needed. I think if we see any more trades it would be for a draft pick, though I don’t know who we would give away. But for the most part, I think Shero is done (barring something ridiculous/ blockbuster happening in the East.)
I found this article too and I thought it was interesting because it was a lot of players that we haven’t really heard their name being tossed around coming to the Pens, at least I hadn’t. Hope it’s interesting.

How can we get Kariya with his 6 mil cap hit without moving big pieces is what I dont understand. Some people like to put out a name just because they like the player without even looking at the cap situation.
Skoula
for a 5th round pick in 2010….damn, betcha Martin’s having a lot of confidence problems right now.

haha well, looks like they’ll take youth over Skoula. Likely not going to get much that deep in the draft but ya never know. Could stumble upon a gem.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
So Florida’s on a selling frenzy and likely looking to move Vokoun. Philly needs a goalie and most likely willing to move a guy like Hartnell. They can’t afford to offer a pick much because, well, they didn’t have a first rounder this past year because of Pronger. If they dish the 2011 pick they won’t have much. So who goes there?

I bet its a 2:59 deal, when Rutheford will take the best deal available. And it wont be a 1st and a prospect. My money is on WAS. they could use a guy with a ring. Not sure why the caps would need him other than that. But hey its just a guess anyway

I think this moves allows Flash and Laich to be permanent wings. But it seemed like Steckel was a solid third line center, so I guess this is simply for experience. They still haven’t gotten a Dman, which I hope they don’t.

Steckel’s secure in the 4th C job, it’s probably Gordon that’s the odd man out

So
I know it is off-topic, but what happened to Nylander? Why did Was send him down to AHL. He still has a year left in his contract.
Clear cap space I think. They were talking about it on NHL Powerplay back when it happened. Nylander is old and I believe injury prone.
by lostprophetRJX on Mar 3, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions
They loaned him to Grand Rapids of the AHL. Washington pays his full salary, but it doesnt count on the books.
Technically Nylander will start the 2010-11 season with Washington but his no-trade/no-movement clause is no longer active so expect the team to send him somewhere in the AHL or even to Europe perhaps

Yeah, I’m liking Shero’s moves more and more now that I see some of the other deals going around

Jeez, that would have to be a TON of considerations. You think Frank’s made of that kind of money?
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
Hamhuis would have had me worried. Jurcina doesn’t. I think it’s safe to say we made out with the best deadline of all 30 teams, and are once again frontrunners for the Cup.
I don’t know man like they’re saying 4:30 might roll around and a big deal will be announced then.

"Half the game is mental, the other half is being mental." - Jim McKenny
Osala a good power forward prospect, but a lot of concerns about his skating and he’s having a down season.
Corvo and Pothier both similiar, i think corvo is a marginal upgrade but i think he turns the puck over too much
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
Yea. Pothier is younger and seemed like he had some more untapped potential. Other than gaining Corvo’s Cup experience, I see this as an actual downgrade.

That is way to much for Corvo, it really is. He value was way inflated because of lack of available defensemen. This deal doesnt worry me at all.

for a seventh rounder??
Jackets continue to give away roster players for picks that will never see the NHL. Signing him in the first place was a mistake. He made huge money and probably only played 25% of the seasons they had him available.
Hawks and Flyers quiet?
nothing from either team all day so far
Shocked that Philly couldn’t/didn’t upgrade their goaltending. It’s gonna be another 1st round and out for them
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
Agreed. That was one situation where overpayment would have actually been a good thing being that goaltending is really the only piece your missing from being a Cup contender.

Very amusing to see Ryan Whitney go. They tossed that out there as a possible (but not so possible) move. Is this Whitney’s big step into the realm of obscurity?
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
I think giving him the 4M deal was Shero’ only major error. He was good for 2 years but still needed the time to develop I guess.
It’s getting to that point now where everything is mashing up and words are just kinda turning into straight lines. It’s all good.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
I dont really think it was a mistake we got Kunitz and Tangradi for him, so far so good for us.

yea maybe a little, he was playing very well when he got the deal though.
by genomachine-O on Mar 3, 2010 3:53 PM EST up reply actions
Oh I definitely think it was a good move in the end for the Pens. I’m just saying, on behalf of Whitney he’s now headed off to the Oilers, a team in no contention whatsoever right now and easily one in the rebuilding stages of the franchise. I do agree that Shero’s offer of $4 mill was a bit steep back in the day, but here’s another example in which we have to chalk it up for him. He knew a problem on the pay roll when he saw one and dealt Whitney away for what now stands as a win-win for the Pens.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
definitely agree that Whitney’s contract was a small disaster. Good thing is that we did get good return on his trade last year.
Now other teams are dealing with his big contract… still good work RS!
You have to see it for yourself...
With the way he has played this year, $4mm/per should be well off the table. no one is paying that to him this summer, and he should probably accept a 2.5 average over 4 and call it a day. (2-2.25-2.75-3) I’d be OK with that.
yea
i’m certain he and his agent realize his potential, but thankfully for the Pens, he has played like dog poo this year and maybe they can sign him cheap(er) and he will still continue to develop into a great defenseman. I do think that Shero OVERpaid Eaton and OVERpaid Goligoski.
That a bit of a harsh analysis there. Letang hasnt been that bad and Gogo is not overpaid at all. 1.875 thats pretty damn good
by genomachine-O on Mar 3, 2010 4:35 PM EST up reply actions
$2 mill per is definitely a bit much for Eaton. I mean, Ponikarovsky has a $2.5 mill hit and the differences between the two are night and day. Not to mention, Eaton isn’t too far removed from his two consecutive years of debilitating injuries.
GoGo isn’t overpaid but he is underperforming. But if there’s one encouraging aspect to take from his play is that he’s still putting shots on net and coming “this” close to snapping that goose egg in the goals column. His less a defensive liability than he was last year as well, so let’s at least give him a little credit in that department too,
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
Agree that Letang has been far from horrible this year, but what’s the deal? Is no one coaching this kid, or is he uncoachable? When will he start putting pucks on net instead of just trying to shoot as hard as he can? Can’t we get Larry Murphy to come in on a temp basis to work with him? I love this kid’s game and want to see him in Pittsburgh a few more years, but I think he needs to show a more complete game for that to happen.

Sucks to be a Bruins fan, let me tell you
safe to say, B’s fans are a tad upset about the inability to acquire an offensive threat up front. Here’s a nice example from the Globe’s messageboards:
Headline on the Bruins web page here says: “Movement for the Bruins.”
Put the word “Bowel” in front and you’ve got an accurate story.

On the positive side… Penguins seemed to address their two main needs while the Caps’ and Flyers’ goaltending situation remains quite questionable.
NJ stayed quiet (apart from the monster addition of Skoula), so I think a good job again by the Pens’ management.

yeah just Skoula and that Kovalchuk guy

Yeah I plan on typing up a full review of the day at some point tonight. Just waiting to see when everything is officially done, gathering some info and tossing up a post. But I will say that I’m surprised the Flyers didn’t go after a goaltender. And frankly I thought the Islanders would be looking to move someone (other than Sutton). I had Roloson in mind, kinda like that veteran leader a team might want heading into the playoffs. He’d make a good backup in that spot but looks like he’s closing out the season with the Islanders.
Did I see this right – no moves by the Rangers?
outside of Skoula nothing from the Devils.
Pens just did some arbitrary crap with deep draft pick(s) and the Flyers are still the Flyers of yesterday.

more prospects/picks for Carolina
Under the circumstances
we still got two quality NHL players and addressed our needs. Most teams could not manage that.
that is the bottom line. added two proven NHL’ers for a prospect and a 2nd round pick. in a limited market, not bad at all
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
Poni could be a complete rental.. If that turns out to be the case, the trade sucks, unless we win the cup and he plays a big part.
Even if so, what if Caputi blows out his knee ala Esposito and never really comes back? Then it’s a good trade no matter what.
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
The Caps made a lot of moves that likely won’t register as a threat on paper but from what I can tell these guys are gritty forwards. That’s a lethal addition to a team with finesse and skill.

NHL Radio giving Pittsburgh the nod for best deadline day
I think it remains to be seen, but if Ponikarovsky can contribute and give us another scoring threat, I would agree.
Washington has made a ton of moves trying to emulate us last year, and it will probably help, but to be honest, how much better could they really be? They were owning the NHL as is.
I think they made out well but Washington stands as the biggest player on the day. Think they had four or give guys coming their way, each of them set to fill a specific role.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
Not sure about that...
It’s kind of like throwing darts at a dartboard. See how well that worked in Tampa and Montreal, just recently. The Corvo trade doesn’t really help them much, the Walker trade is redundant seeing as how they already have a gritty guy in Knuble. Jurcina is injured for at least a month (didn’t help them much even when healthy). They didn’t lose any roster players, which is important for chemistry and that is probably the best part of the deals they made.
The difference between Shero and Mcphee is that Shero understands you need to address your weaknesses by plugging the holes with something efficient enough. Mcphee thinks you can cover up weaknesses by adding more of their strengths. That theory, while it may work in some situations, won’t get you to the promised land.
by lostprophetRJX on Mar 3, 2010 10:27 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t think that’s quite accurate. McPhee refuses to overpay at all, and he maybe needs to be more like Shero and take a few risks, trading away elite prospects. The story is that last year, for example, he balked when the Ducks asked for Alzner/Carlson + Neuvirth in exchange for Pronger, and this season apparently Florida asked for Alzner/Carlson for Vokoun.
