Penguins vs. Senators, Round 1, Game 2
[SBN Sens Blog - Silver Seven Sens]
Well the Senators may have taken the first game, but not without some expense. As Hooks posted yesterday on the front page, the Senators will be without Milan Michalek for the remainder of the playoffs, as he will now undergo surgery for a torn ACL for the fourth time in his career. Unreal. As much as it is a nice thing to see a big scorer on the other team remain out for a series, that sort of thing isn't exactly something you wish upon your enemies. Combine that recent news with the already existing knowledge of Alex Kovalev and Ottawa is missing some big guns.
Of course, no number of injuries or lackluster play can undermine the porous goaltending efforts by Marc-Andre Fleury on Wednesday night. I'm confident (probably more confident than others) that tonight he shows off some Stanley Cup Finals-esque goaltending skills.
So again, we continue on:
Give me the first Penguins goal scorer
Give me the final score (include which team will win)
I know I didn't mention naming the winning team the last time around in Game 1, but since you all did it anyway it might as well be an addendum to this game that may or may not include a prize of sorts at the end. There's a good chance I'll consider emptying out the Pensburgh prize closet, whereby "prize closet" I actually mean a box next to my closet. No prizes awarded until after the first round.
Puck and thread at 7:00.

this isn't baseball, and I don't think the Sens are gonna forfeit
(9-0 is the default/official score for a forfeited game in basebal)

Sorry to break with the topic on this post, but I just wanted to say something that I’ve been thinking about today…
I know we’ve heard (and said ourselves) that the Pens just need to find that passion or drive to compete in the playoffs. The magic solution, according to some, is that all they’re missing right now is focus. But I think this begs the question: do the Pens actually have the talent this year to make a run at the Stanley Cup?
I don’t follow other teams nearly as intensely as I do the Pens, but i don’t think it’s a stretch to say the Pens have the worst blue line of any team in the playoffs right now. Out of all the playoff teams, only the Senators gave up more goals in the regular season than the Pens. I won’t go into comparing the GVT for individual players on our defense, but they certainly seem to be much weaker than any other team.
And of course, the other problem is our forward group. I truly believe we only have two top six forwards on this team right now, and the rest of our players have just been involved in a giant shuffling and juggling match for the entire season. Players like Guerin and Fedetenko have seen time on the first and the fourth line, and our third leading scorer among forwards is Poni, who has managed only 21 goals this season.
I’m not saying that our team isn’t talented, or that we’ll get swept by Ottawa. But I think it’s a question worth pondering.
First of all, it’s too late to ponder anything, so pull the razor away from your wrists, and get behind the team. These are the 2009-10 Pens, deal with it.
Don’t forget that Tampa and Carolina have won cups in recent years, without a Sid or Geno on either team. It really is anyone’s race, just ask Ottawa, Montreal, Phoenix, Philly, etc.
Way too early to quit, and way way too early to be busting out the black eyeliner and Morrisey albums.
I’m not saying that our team isn’t talented, or that we’ll get swept by Ottawa. But I think it’s a question worth pondering.
I don’t know how you figure I had a razor near my wrist based on the statement above. I don’t think I said anything that entailed a panic button mentality or a belief that we would lose in 4 games to Ottawa. All I asked on a discussion board was to discuss the idea that the Pens don’t have the raw talent that we might think they have.
Please make sure to think and use logic next time you respond to a post.

My turn
Someone beat me to 3-1, Malkin…
My next best guess, 4-2, Guerin… I have a gut feeling that Sid has a hand in the first goal… even if Guerin doesn’t score.
probably because sid was kept at bay last time and we all know that doesn’t sit well with that boy. i’m done psychoanalyzing now. =)

No reason you can't pick the same thing as someone else
If you think that’s what’s going to happen, go with it, and if you’re right, share in the glory at the end.

Agree. I mean, guessing someone else can definitely set you apart if they score. But guessing the same guy and eventually breaking off with someone else can keep you in the running.

Funny thing, while I was off looking at another site, you stole my answers to this game.
So I’ll change my score to 4-3 Penguins, but stick with Gonchar as the first to light the lamp.
Stick to half your guns, I always say! And by always, I mean for the first time ever.

No need to call the game winner. Just the first one. I suppose that’s what you meant?

My prediction
5-3 Staal scores the first one. Was gonna say Adams as a joke but in all seriousness staal deserves one so why not have him start off the scoring in a tight game that the pens break open in the third with 2 goals to win 5-3
it will be 4-3 until the pens get an empty netter at the end to make it a 5-3 final lol. But its definitely staal first

4-3 Pens
With the first goal being scored by wait for it Jordan Staal with that third line stepping it up!
4-1 Pens
Leo scores first, and Fleury with the EN at the end.

4-2 Pens. First goal to Spezza (stupid Spezza).
And the power won’t go out during the thunderstorm/game.

Oh, right … I should pay more attention …
First, we’re going to make a trade (which is totally legit since the trade deadline is a whole 11 months away): Poni for Spezza. It’s not a great idea, since heaven knows we don’t need another center (beside which, I like Poni!). But we’ll take him, and let Geno & Sid play on the same line. And when Spezza scores the Pens’ first goal, we’ll decide we love him, and we’ll keep him forever.
Either that or he’ll inadvertently deflect/tip/knock in a rebound.
And also, J-Staal will score the first Pens’ goal.
Is that better? (I swear I didn’t inhale!)

i’m SO exhausted today and apparently have selective reading because i just read “staal for spezza.” and took it as gospel truth and nearly swore up a storm.

Well on the up side it sounds as if you are prepared to take everything I say as gospel truth. Which I feel is likely to come in very useful at some point.
