Penguins vs. Senators, Round 1, Game 2

[SBN Sens Blog - Silver Seven Sens]

Well the Senators may have taken the first game, but not without some expense.  As Hooks posted yesterday on the front page, the Senators will be without Milan Michalek for the remainder of the playoffs, as he will now undergo surgery for a torn ACL for the fourth time in his career.  Unreal.  As much as it is a nice thing to see a big scorer on the other team remain out for a series, that sort of thing isn't exactly something you wish upon your enemies.  Combine that recent news with the already existing knowledge of Alex Kovalev and Ottawa is missing some big guns.

Of course, no number of injuries or lackluster play can undermine the porous goaltending efforts by Marc-Andre Fleury on Wednesday night.  I'm confident (probably more confident than others) that tonight he shows off some Stanley Cup Finals-esque goaltending skills.

So again, we continue on:

Give me the first Penguins goal scorer
Give me the final score (include which team will win)

I know I didn't mention naming the winning team the last time around in Game 1, but since you all did it anyway it might as well be an addendum to this game that may or may not include a prize of sorts at the end.  There's a good chance I'll consider emptying out the Pensburgh prize closet, whereby "prize closet" I actually mean a box next to my closet.  No prizes awarded until after the first round.

Puck and thread at 7:00.

Sorry to break with the topic on this post, but I just wanted to say something that I’ve been thinking about today…

I know we’ve heard (and said ourselves) that the Pens just need to find that passion or drive to compete in the playoffs. The magic solution, according to some, is that all they’re missing right now is focus. But I think this begs the question: do the Pens actually have the talent this year to make a run at the Stanley Cup?

I don’t follow other teams nearly as intensely as I do the Pens, but i don’t think it’s a stretch to say the Pens have the worst blue line of any team in the playoffs right now. Out of all the playoff teams, only the Senators gave up more goals in the regular season than the Pens. I won’t go into comparing the GVT for individual players on our defense, but they certainly seem to be much weaker than any other team.

And of course, the other problem is our forward group. I truly believe we only have two top six forwards on this team right now, and the rest of our players have just been involved in a giant shuffling and juggling match for the entire season. Players like Guerin and Fedetenko have seen time on the first and the fourth line, and our third leading scorer among forwards is Poni, who has managed only 21 goals this season.

I’m not saying that our team isn’t talented, or that we’ll get swept by Ottawa. But I think it’s a question worth pondering.

by GoPens! on Apr 16, 2010 10:04 AM EDT reply actions

First of all, it’s too late to ponder anything, so pull the razor away from your wrists, and get behind the team. These are the 2009-10 Pens, deal with it.

Don’t forget that Tampa and Carolina have won cups in recent years, without a Sid or Geno on either team. It really is anyone’s race, just ask Ottawa, Montreal, Phoenix, Philly, etc.

Way too early to quit, and way way too early to be busting out the black eyeliner and Morrisey albums.

I’m not saying that our team isn’t talented, or that we’ll get swept by Ottawa. But I think it’s a question worth pondering.

I don’t know how you figure I had a razor near my wrist based on the statement above. I don’t think I said anything that entailed a panic button mentality or a belief that we would lose in 4 games to Ottawa. All I asked on a discussion board was to discuss the idea that the Pens don’t have the raw talent that we might think they have.

Please make sure to think and use logic next time you respond to a post.

Oh, right … I should pay more attention …

First, we’re going to make a trade (which is totally legit since the trade deadline is a whole 11 months away): Poni for Spezza. It’s not a great idea, since heaven knows we don’t need another center (beside which, I like Poni!). But we’ll take him, and let Geno & Sid play on the same line. And when Spezza scores the Pens’ first goal, we’ll decide we love him, and we’ll keep him forever.

Either that or he’ll inadvertently deflect/tip/knock in a rebound.

And also, J-Staal will score the first Pens’ goal.

Is that better? (I swear I didn’t inhale!)
