Around SBN: In Crunch Time, Spurs Don't Change Their Game

Really? Brodeur? Really?

I guess it really is a reputation award, then. It's good to see that the consensus PensBurgh editor pick for Vezina is among the top three vote-getters, though.

Flyers fan here…clearly Marty does not deserve to be there, who would your third finalist have been? MAF?

I wouldn’t nominate MAF, for what it’s worth. His season hasn’t exactly been lights out. Craig Anderson would be my pick

That was what I was thinking as well. His performance two nights ago was a solid reminder of his excellent season.

Haha, MAF, no. I like him, but he’s not a Vezina candidate.

My first choice was Miller, my second choice was Nabokov, third Bryzgalov.

For some reason Nabokov just didn’t do it for me. His numbers are solid but I think he was a 4th or 5th best option. Miller without a doubt deserves to win the Vezina.

Hate to play devil’s advocate, but Brodeur did lead the league in wins and shutouts…

Oh, I know that, but I just can’t bring myself to care. If you’re on a good team, simply playing 77 games will give you a chance to lead the league in wins, and being on a defensively-oriented team will pump up your shutout numbers.

He’s good, but he’s not a top-3 netminder anymore.

by JustinM on Apr 20, 2010 8:45 AM EDT up reply actions

All true…but is not some credit given for being as old as Marty is and still being able to play 77 games? Not that I disagree with you at all, I am just asking the question.

by EREX21 on Apr 20, 2010 9:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I’ll give him credit for that, but that doesn’t make him excellent, just durable. It’s also a question of coaching. I’m sure MAF could play 70 games a season if Bylsma wanted him to. I happen to agree with those who feel that even if Brodeur can play 77 games a year doesn’t mean he should and that he’d probably be even better if he didn’t.

BTW….“devil’s advocate”?….nice.

It’s literal AND figurative.

I agree as well, but one can argue that Anderson is THE main part for Colorado’s playoff run right now and not just one of the parts. I mean, any team that gets out-shot 42-7 by the end of the second is bound to lose if its goaltender isn’t prepared to stand on his head. Fluke OT goal or not, Anderson won that game for Colorado.

He does, yes … but he hasn’t had to carry his team the way that Miller has carried his team. Or Bryzgalov, for that matter. If I had a vote, it would go to Miller.

Leafs fan living large in the Pitt and pretending like the drought is over. Go Pens!

Brodeur has Vezina numbers

from his performance against the Pens alone.

Yes, his other 28 opponents are meaningless. I like the way you think!

by JustinM on Apr 20, 2010 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean, he was plenty good this year, but take away his stats from the six Pens games and they don’t look nearly as good.

OH.

Yeah, in that case you’re absolutely right. He killed us this year.
