Game Photos - 4-3-2010 Pens vs Thrashers
The Penguins and Thrashers battled this afternoon at Mellon Arena, but for many fans, the hockey day started much earlier with a trip to the Heinz History Center. Thanks to the Pens, the NHL, and the Hockey Hall of Fame, folks who were in Pittsburgh this weekend had the chance to see Hockey's Holy Grail, as well as all of the other major trophies.
Be very quiet, we're hunting Thrashers.
For maximum effect, we used the positive mojo of the Pensburgh signs behind both benches today. The Penguins improved to 3-0-0 when playing with the power of Pensburgh!
And of course our other good luck charm was in attendance and watching over the home team's bench.
"What is thy bidding, my master?"
There was some pregame business. Below are the co-winners of the "Good Guy" award.
Bill Guerin walked away with the "Comback Player" Award, as in no matter how old he gets, he keeps coming back.
Jordan Staal was honored as the "Player's Player".
I would not have wanted to be the guy to tell Brooks that he didn't win anything....
Fortunately, no one had to break that news to Brooks as he was recognized as the Defensive Player of the Year, edging out GoGo and an orange traffic cone.
Then Sid won all of the other awards, but refused to come out from behing the camerman to give me a good picture. Can you find Sid in this picture?
Fan dress code infractions: No shirts, no shoes....NO SHIRTS! It's the first one on the list. Come on, guys.
Somebody tell Tanger he's got a little schmutz on the back of his jersey.
As the late, great Marvin Gaye once said, "Let's Get it On!"
The Rough Stuff
Bill Guerin intimidates the world.
The Funny Stuff
To honor the final season of the Johnstown Chiefs, Evgeni Malkin performs his own rendition of Michael Ontkean's classic on-ice striptease from the movie Slapshot, which was filmed in Johnstown.
Sid, Geno, tongues and Iceburgh

The Game
Fleury got turned around on this play.
What a collection of talent...
Trailing 3-2 late in the game, the Pens pulled Fleury to get the extra attacker.
Paging Mr Gonchar.
It worked! Gonchar tied the game to force overtime.
"Let's get it on", overtime edition.
Leopold put one past an unexpecting Hedberg, scoring his first goal as a Penguin.
First star of the game, thank God he is back, Sergei Gonchar!
Thanks to PensFan8725 and Shayborg for getting these shots of the Pensburgh signs.

Again, very very nice work. You’re spoling us with the promotion and the pics. I appreciate them both.

Haha Pensburgh sign is 3-0-0, hmm?? Keep it up there forever!
Anyways, the pictures are A-mazing. Please keep posting pictures whenever you go to a game!
Fortunately, no one had to break that news to Brooks as he was recognized as the Defensive Player of the Year, edging out GoGo and an orange traffic cone.
Haha captions are awesome.
Great shots!
Nice collection!!! Great shots! I was there and this tells the story perfectly!! I have been working on my hockey photography for a couple of years now, and each game and practice, I learn something new. I hope to get some shots like these soon, we have been on the season ticket waiting list for almost 2 years now!!
Your seats are great! Are you a season ticket holder or a ticket exchange fanatic, like myself?
XOXO

No kidding. Awesome jersey. That was just some guy we saw walking to the arena as we came in from 7th Ave. That’s the best customization job I’ve seen since the guy who had the #75 “LOSERS SINCE” Flyers jersey during the ‘08 ECF.
I wish I had season tickets. Living near DC, I can’t even get on the list, unless I use an address of somebody in PA, OH or WV. Maybe you will get yours in the new arena!
As for hockey photography, I am also still learning. If I take 200-300 pics in a game, usually a few of them at least will turn out decent. The biggest problem I have is that the ice surface is so bright, if I don’t keep the camera focused on the ice the whole time, then my camera takes a bit to adjust to it and I miss a lot of shots that way.

Great pics! And great seats. I am very jealous. I haven’t been to a game since last season since I’m at school all the time, so my envy is running thick and deep right now. But yeah, hockey is a hard sport to photograph, so awesome work.
Oh, and Jordan Staal had gorgeous hair. Ooohoho.
Yeah, my gravy train comes to an end after Thursday’s game, and then I’m out there fighting for playoff tickets like everybody else.

Damn
you have great seats. I’m assuming it’s awesome to be so close, but what’s it like? Can you often hear the players communicating on the bench?
You take great pics, by the way.
I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
Thanks about the pics. I’m just a rookie at that, but if I take a few hundred, I’ll usually get something decent to come out. Yeah, the seats are amazing. I got lucky and had a great connection for the last 4 games or so, 2 games behind the benches and now 2 games next to the Pens’ bench. It is a different kind of experience from there. The overall view is not nearly as good as other seats higher up, but yes, you hear quite a bit of the player communication and even more of what the coaches are saying. Plus it’s always kind of cool to see yourself on tv cheering on your team, or in the case of the Philly game, putting salt on the wounds of the other team.
