Tales of the Tape: Bill Guerin vs. Jim Slater
Oh, what would you like today, fellow Penguins fans? A fight in which Bill Guerin gets a solid win? I think I can help with that.
It looked like Jim Slater pushed Alexei Ponikarovsky a bit, but Guerin seemed to be itchin' for a tussle, so the two began struggling, gloves and sticks flying as they went. Guerin's second shot knocked Slater's helmet off, then a couple jabs from Slater took off Guerin's. Guerin got Slater down and started hitting his back, causing Slater to take something of a desperation swing to get him back into the match. Unfortunately (for him), Guerin kept a hold of his jersey, bringing it up over his head (D2 style). Guerin composed himself, pulled back for the big swing, and levelled Slater with it. If that's not a win, I don't know what is.
What, don't believe me? Here:

that was a butt whooping. In Slaters’s defense, Guerin has 2 inches and 20+ pounds on him, but a couple of those punches had to hurt,,,,
I love Bill Guerin. Jim Slater was just asking to get his butt kicked…
Here's to all us girls who love hockey...and the men who play it.

HockeyFights.com has a great ‘anniversary’ fight posted today. It’s not particularly relevant for the Pens, but it certainly makes most of the fights we see these days rather mild by comparison! I’m not sure if my favourite part was when Roy collides with a Red Wing, or when they show the official trying to scrape away the blood. Here’s the link:

Leafs fan living large in the Pitt and pretending like the drought is over. Go Pens!
I love the way Guerin has been leading this team lately. He is willing to do anything to win. The only bad thing about this fight is that it appeared to inspire the Thrashers more than the Pens, with Atlanta scoring less than a minute later.
Not to take anything away from this fight, but PopRocks post made me think of what is probably my favorite fight ever. It was the classic McSorley-Probert bout from ’94, when Marty was on the Pens and Probert on the Wings. The two went at it for what seemed like an eternity. Incredible stuff. I moved across country several years ago, and in an attempt to trim down my posessions I tossed or gave away all of my video cassettes. The one that I saved, and still have today, includes this fight.
I also think it is interesting how people can see the same event and yet have such different views of what happened. I was shocked to see on HockeyFights that most voters favored Probert in that one, while I always thought Marty was the clear winner because the fight itself was pretty even but at the end it looked like McSorley could have gone another five minutes while Probert was ready to drop dead.
Anyway, I’m sure whoever voted for Slater probably did so simply out of pro-Atlanta or anti-Pittsburgh bias, but you never know. Even the recap on the Penguins site said the two “went blow-for-blow” until the fight was broken up. Not exactly how I saw it.

I stand by my assessment as I tweeted it yesterday. Hot as hell. I’m beginning to wonder what’s got Guerin in that mood, though, and if a truly decisive Penguins victory would calm him down a little.
Also, thanks to Empty Netters, I believe I have my new “You do not wanna mess with me today” computer wallpaper for work. (I occasionally use images of things like a growling bear when I’m having a bad day and want to tell people to please not make it worse if they don’t have to.)
Whoever voted for Slater or draw is either a Thrashers homer or hard-core Penguin hater.

Billy G is the man. What a knockout punch. If SBN avatars supported animated gifs, this would be mine in a heartbeat.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
I would do that and change my user name to DownGoesSlater.

I was lucky enough to be in the Igloo for this match-up… We had a great view of this brawl…. It was satisfying as a Pens fan to see some energy from the rest of the boys after the fight… I was at the game before, the horrible shutout against Tampa Bay, and Billy G dropped the mittens then too, but to no avail, the team seemed to hardly notice… Glad this one helped the momentum… I couldn’t stand to witness another one as brutal as that Lightning… This is our view of this sweet battle…

Is that the view from C17?
Excellent video! And you caught a shot of me standing up next to the Pens bench at the end, so it’s an instant classic. Rec’d for that alone.
Will you be at Thursday’s game?

I totally agree. I love the end zone sections. You get an amazing view when the play is in your zone, and when it’s at the other end you can still see what’s going on without any blind spots or kinks in your neck from turning too much. Of course you have that darned net to contend with, but it’s a minor distraction. You also must have had an incredible look at the game tying and winning goals.
