Ridiculous suspension. The 5 minute major and game misconduct were already overkill imho.

by rlsuth on Apr 9, 2010 6:32 PM EDT reply actions

deserved suspension.

poni rode him into the boards, and made no effort to pull up. to say it wasn’t deserving a suspension is looking at it through black and gold colored glasses.

While it is true that I am prone to viewing the world through those very spectacles, I still think that Bailey turned away at the last minute when it was too late for Poni to pull back. It was somewhat reckless to begin with, which I think justifies the major and game misconduct, but I think Bailey’s actions made it much worse than it otherwise would have been.

Being mad at Cooke is justifiable. What Cooke did was suspension worthy as I myself stated at the time. And, I don’t expect you to like the Penguins in the aftermath of such a hit. If someone on the Bruins had taken a similarly dirty shot to the head of Crosby or Malkin then I would, undoubtedly, have a serious bone to pick with them for a long time, however, I absolutely would not go to a Bruins fan site and start throwing around insulting blanket statements about them. It’s just not appropriate. If you want to weigh in on this specific issue and say that you think this hit by Ponikarovski was dirty, then you’re welcome to it, but I don’t think it is proper to insult a whole team like that, and in a forum like this, you can’t be surprised if your comments come off looking a bit like trolling.

by OlenWhitaker on Apr 9, 2010 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry, that’s not my intent. I just want my point to be known, not taken the wrong way. I feel the Ponikiarovsky hit was dirty, and I just saw simalarties to the Cooke hit. I did mean to look like I wad trolling, I’m sorry. I don’t hate the Penguins, or their fans. I did want it to seem that way.

Fair enough. Maybe I overreacted. If so, I apologize. If nothing else, at least we can agree that Ovechkin is a dirty hitter. :)

Rule 42 - Boarding

Rule 42 – Boarding

42.1 Boarding – A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player or goalkeeper who checks an opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to be thrown violently in the boards. The severity of the penalty, based upon the degree of violence of the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.

There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player (or goalkeeper) applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a vulnerable position and if so, he must avoid the contact.

However, there is also a responsibility on the player with the puck to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and vulnerable position. This balance must be considered by the Referees when applying this rule.

Thanks for posting the rule. I was about to do it before I read your post. Poni deserved the 5 minutes and game misconduct because, as the rule states, the onus is on him not to make that hit on a vulnerable player. I don’t think he deserved the suspension because, once again as the rule states, there is responsibility for both players here, not just the guy making the hit, but the guy being hit to avoid putting himself in that position.

Ya, I agree…somewhat. Watching the video I ’don’t see any point that Poni could have “let up”. Poni is 6’4" 240, Bailey is 6’1" and a little less than 190. With that size differential ANY hit is gonna look bad…this was one of those hits whose result ended up causing the penalty, not the action.

It was totally a penalty based on the result. If he didn’t get injured it would have been at most a minor, and no suspension.

That said, it was a bit of an over-reaction, but it is good to see the NHL being serious about bad hits. Then pens will make the playoffs, and Poni will be back for them so no real harm to the pens. It’s a shame to see players get injured, so at least the NHL is moving in the right direction.

Boston Man...

…i don’t think you are evaluating this separately from the Cooke hit on Savard.

Poni is NOT a dirty player. He’s practically Lady Byng.
Check out his history, his PIMs/year, etc.

Its a hit the league is trying to eliminate, so I get the 5 and the game.
I don’t think it was suspension-worthy though.
He got the same thing Ovechkin got, BUT…Ovechkin has a long rap sheet and Ovechkin lined Campbell up from a good deal greater distance.
Also, this hit was MUCH LESS worse than the Lashoff board to Tenk a week or so ago, and Lashoff got ZERO suspension.

NHL inconsistency is the only consistency I see.

heh I guess I can let one F bomb slide. But hopefully this doesn’t open up the flood gates.

Jack was an awesome guy. I e-mailed him completely out of the blue one time to discuss his book “Saved.” (here’s the interview if you’d like to read it)

While talking he mentioned he had a new book, “Open Ice,” on the way. So the idea was to touch base again the week after his book hit shelves. He was nice enough to send a complimentary copy on something like a Tuesday. I read one essay by Thursday but we had planned to have a quick Q&A on Saturday. He mentioned he was vacationing with family that weekend but that he’d be willing to step away for a few minutes to talk hockey. That guy loved it. Unfortunately he passed away that weekend and we never had a chance to catch up. (post on his passing here).

We shared a bunch of e-mails outside of just the promotional stuff for his book. Like I said, the guy loved to talk hockey. We got into a pretty decent discussion one time about Tim Thomas and his correlation to the goalie he created in “Saved.” Another time we debated Crosby and his place in history, to which he, even a lifelong Bruins fan, agreed was not even a debatable subject.

Read up on that interview. Hope ya enjoy. And I suggest checking out Open Ice if you get a chance. Some awesome essays in there.

That’s still pretty God damn amazing. I just bought his book Home Ice, but I need to finish the book I’m reading now before starting it (about the Gangs of New York if anyone was curious.) But I will most definitely check out his other ones. He taught for quite a while at BU didn’t he? I couldn’t find a set time length on any of the articles or obits I read.

In Pond Hockey he seems like the nicest person ever. One thing he said was so true in it: “I’ve never been unhappy on the rink.” And it was true, he even says in the movie to the crew, I just met you and standing out there on the backyard rink for an hour so was a blast, even if they were just talking shop.

I’ve read that Gangs of New York book too. Is it the one that is simply called, “The Gangs of New York?”

Yea he taught at BU. Still did up until the time he passed away. When you get a chance, Open Ice really has a great collection of essays. My favorite quote from him, which is actually more from the character JP Savard in “Saved,” is “Play hurt, play hard.” He said himself it was just as much a lesson in life as it is in hockey, and I agree 110%

It does look like Bailey changed direction at the last minute which may have made it worse, but I can see where the suspension comes in. At first I thought the game misconduct was a little much, but after watching it again, I agree with Diomedes that players do have a responsibility, and there was obviously quite a bit of difference between Bailey and the boards, enough that Poni should have realized what would happen.

Poni has been a bust so far, but maybe these last two games of not playing will give him a chance to really watch his new team and see what he needs to do, what needs to change, watch some tape, and just clear his head a little bit. Then he can come out hungry.

I think here again Ponikarovsky thought the Islander was going to do one thing, but he did something else (turn right instead of turn left). Was this suspended under the new rules? Didn’t seem suspension worthy under the old ones.

Seems like this was fanshotted 3 times before coming in the middle column.

After watching it a few times, I can understand the Refs’ reaction and the subsequent 5 and game. But the suspension? I don’t know…Poni didn’t “violently” throw himself at Bailey, and he didn’t line up his head into the boards. I don’t know…perhaps this is the League making up the should-have-been-a-suspension on Cooke’s hit.

I had a similar reaction. During the game, I didn’t really see the problem with the hit. But after watching it (repeatedly and in slow motion!), I could see the problem and the penalty. But for a guy who has a pretty clean record, the suspension was a little surprising. I’m generally in favour of suspensions for boarding, but this seems more like one of those weird confluences of events, and I’m not convinced the suspension was warranted.

Poni’s hit was directly from the “Ovie Dirty Hit School”. While glorified in some of the media when a, not previously known, “dirty player” does it, it is dirty. Most of this players know what they are doing. The score is one sided, he did not need to throw that check in the manner that he did. Granted for all of you defenders analyzing if Bailey turned or not, by doing that ha got hurt worse. Nevertheless it was dirty. He was reckless and is costing him, but Bailey is paying a bigger price. I am a die hard Pens fan, but the truth is that Poni deserves his punishment, only he knows if it was intentional or not, at the very least it was reckless. If the shoe was in the other foot, all the Pens fans in this website would be after Baileys head.

by Outcast on Apr 10, 2010 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll take the reckless label (Poni is, after all, a veteran). But I’m not ready to take the ‘dirty’ label yet. I think there’s a difference, and it has something to do with intent to injure.

Should we save this judgment until after the playoffs?

Just curious, but did you consider the Hossa trade to be a bust? Hossa didn’t exactly light it up in the regular season – 10 points in 12 game (3 g, 7 a). Poni has 9 points in 16 games (2 g, 7 a). Hossa went on to be the man in the playoffs, getting 26 points in 20 games (12 g, 14 a). I am not suggesting that Poni is or will ever be Hossa, but shouldn’t we give the guy a little more of a chance before we write him off? He was presumably brought in to play with Geno, who has been sick or injured for several games, and they haven’t had a great chance to blend as a line yet. No offense, but I hope he catches fire in the playoffs and makes your rush to judgment look a little foolish.

I’m not rushing to judgment, and I’m not the only one who has said that so far he has been a bust. He’s also been on a line with Sid, and didn’t make anything of that either.

I know you’re not the bad guy, and didn’t mean to make it sound that way. I had seen your other comment, so I know we’re on the same page as far as what we hope will happen. I still think 16 games is too soon to make what sounded like a final judgment, but when it is qualified as being a “bust so far”, then it sounds a little better.

I see where you’re at now. Plus, I also think that after seeing what he did in Toronto, especially since all season we’ve been saying we need a good scoring winger, we had our hopes up a bit so that doesn’t help at all. He has all the makings to help us greatly, I just don’t understand why it hasn’t been clicking.

Didn’t he have a goal in his first game with us?
