Penguins vs. Canadiens, Round 2, Game 7

[Habs Eyes on the Prize]

This is it.  Who's nervous?

Well I'm here to tell you; don't be.  The Pens bounced back in two game sevens during the postseason last year and will have to prove they can do it again.  This game is going to come down to raw skill combined with who wants it more.  No weak penalties (hopefully) for either side.  Let the players skate, goaltenders save (Halak a little less, please) and the shots fly.

I also must warn that while the Pens may be playing against the Habs tonight, we Penguins fans are going up against a few fan bases.  Detroit, Philly and Washington fans may all be posing as Montreal fans tonight, with others idling by waiting to pounce.  Can't deny we wouldn't do the same in their position.

Format: Winning team name - Score - First Pens goal scorer's last name

Give me the first Penguins goal scorer
Give me the final score (include which team will win)

Example: Penguins - 7-2 - Lemieux

It might be wishful thinking, but I am going with a repeat of what happened in last years Game 7 against Washington. The final score will be 6 – 2 with Halak being chased out of goal after giving up 4 goals. It looks like I am copying Rehcie on this one.

Weight in Pens fans on this one…this could be an interesting addition/subtraction. You’re Danny B…what do you do?

Dan Bylsma didn’t say if he would consider dressing Jay McKee tonight for Game 7 in place of either Jordon Leopold or Alex Goligoski, who both struggled in Game 6 against Montreal. – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

I can’t say I am surprised. Letestu was a nice insurance policy in case Staal stumbled coming back from injury, but for tonight it is all hands on deck and that means you go with a 20-25 goal man (Poni) over AHLer Letestu.

What is really weird is not just the Pens sticking with Gogo-Leo (which sorry, is inexcusable) but that Tenks has lost the faith of the Pens coaching staff COMPLETELY. He is now apparently option #3 behind Letestu and Connor. We already know his Pens career is over, the question is, is his NHL career over?

by Dr Tre on May 12, 2010 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

If you think they should sit Gogo

then you didn’t watch game 5 of this series.

Or else you just missed how much he controlled that game. Yeah, he had a bad game in game 6, but Kris Letang has played poor defense in almost every game. Despite the fact that Letang has been scoring goals, he has been a consistent -1 or -2 in nearly every game this postseason.

by PaulMorel on May 12, 2010 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Defender Plus/Minus

On the series:
Letang = -2
Gogo = +1

And that includes how many goals by Letang himself? 2 or 3? So that speaks for how he has been playing defense.

And yes, I know that plus/minus can be a deceptive stat. In this case, I think it is apt.

grain of salt

by PaulMorel on May 12, 2010 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

There simply isn’t a more potentially misleading stat in all of sports of that +/- . Just because you were on the ice for a goal either for or against doesn’t mean you had anything to do with it.

As for Letang’s play in Game 6, I am with ya. That early give-away and collapse trying to get back seemed to sting him for certainly the rest of the 1st and arguably the whole game. Overall though I think you are watching the emergence of a legit top 2 defenseman in Kris Letang. Tanger and Orpik look to be THE pairing in Pittsburgh for the next 3-4 years at least, much like the Murphy-Ulf pairing of the early 90’s.

Gogo though looks like a one trick pony who can provide you offense in exchange for defense and in order to be a legit top 4 defenseman on any NHL team you have to find some balance and as of now, I don’t think he has it in him and if he does he is really good at hiding it.

I am not saying cut the guy, I am not saying to send him to the AHL, I just think we have to come to terms with what he is right now and in a Game 7 I would rather dress either Leopold OR Gogo, but not both and get McKee out there for his defense.

Won-loss record, either for goalies or pitchers, is definitely less meaningful.

by JustinM on May 12, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

many QB stats are less meaningful. The super bowl winning QB is almost never the guy who racked up a million yards that season.

grain of salt

by PaulMorel on May 12, 2010 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Right. Plus/minus CAN be meaningless … but if you were watching the games, you saw that Letang’s poor defense led directly to many of the goals where he was on the ice.

Whether it is by giving the puck away with a bad pass, or getting caught flat footed, Letang has been opening the door.

If you take out his goals, Letang is a -5. If you take out Gogo’s goals, he is a +1.

Yes, plus/minus can be deceiving, but in this situation, it isn’t.

grain of salt

by PaulMorel on May 12, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

and I’m not complaining about his offense, or saying we should cut him …. I’m just saying that if we are talking about sitting a defender, then he should be sat before Gogo … and I don’t really think that either should be sat.

Both will bounce back tonight!!!

grain of salt

by PaulMorel on May 12, 2010 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Poni better back check and go to the net tonight. Otherwise that line with Geno and Guerin may not work too well on defense or for that matter on offense either.

by Outcast on May 12, 2010 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Morning skate doesnt always reflect what will happend during the game. I have to admit I am not a fan at all of that second line. Geno and Guerin just dont seem to click and lets not start on Poni….but I’ll put my faith in DB.

by genomachine-O on May 12, 2010 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I am on the record saying that Billy G. simply doesn’t belong in a Top 6 Role right now. Dress him for the 4th line and let him get his PP work, but no way does he have the wheels to be playing with either Sid or Geno.

But, he wins corner battles and controls the boards some might say. Really? When is the last time Billy G. and anyone went to the corner or the boards and Billy G. came out with the puck? Think about it. I love Billy G. I really do but he, like Tenks, is D-O-N-E done.

Life is about one simple choice, get busy living or get busy dying

by Dr Tre on May 12, 2010 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

sitting Letestu (as I suggested after last game) … agreed.

Not that there is an especially great alternative, but I like moving Talbot back to the fourth line. Otherwise, the goal-scoring potential of that line is close to nil.

grain of salt

by PaulMorel on May 12, 2010 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually would like to see them keep Letestu and have him center the third line. Move Talbot to center the fourth line and have Staal center the second line, moving Malkin to wing. Hopefully that would jump start both Malkin and Staal and would keep Poni in the press box.

by gilathiel on May 12, 2010 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s a good idea too. Hadn’t occurred to me.

grain of salt

by PaulMorel on May 12, 2010 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I also think sitting Leopold for Mckee would be good. The problem with the Gogo/Leo pairing is that both of them seem to be looking to go on the offensive at the expense of defense. I think what works better is if you have one offensive and one defensive defenseman paired together. Then the defensive guy can bail out his partner and the offensive one has more confidence in being able to jump up in the play. That’s why the other 2 pairings usually work better with Gonchar/Letang paired up with Orpik/Eaton. Comparing to last year, our 3rd set of defense were both defensive players while now they’re both offensive, and the difference is evident.

by gilathiel on May 12, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. Gogo seems more comfortable with McKee. I dont think its a coincidence that the best games Gogo has had in the playoffs hes been paired with McKee. I’d like to see that again.

by genomachine-O on May 12, 2010 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

How can Geno and Talbot not be playing together? Malkin is always on his horse when The Gamer is with him. I don’t know why , but he just is.

From the Pens site:

Montreal’s Hal Gill, who missed Game 6 at Bell Centre with a cut on the back of his leg, participated in the Canadiens morning skate. Gill looked fluid in his strides and didn’t appear to be slowed (a relative term) or show any effects from his injury. He cut, stopped, started, crossed over and changed direction with ease.

Lol at Gill not being “slowed,” but this is pretty big. We all saw what Sid did with him out of the lineup in game 6. Hopefully, DB can get Gill away from him as much as possible.

Absurd, in the first place highly unlikely that Ponie will score a goal, even if he is helped by someone else. Secondly Caputi is a player still in development we don’t really know, in the end his value may be equal to Poni. That is 0.

I keep playing it out in my head. 4-3 PIT, first goal by Plekanec. Penguin power play capitalizes on late-game opportunities. I just keep seeing this game end up like the Ottawa game, where you’re supposed to be out of it and the other team just can’t keep the mo’ going.

Hopefully tonight the boys bring their killer instinct. This time, if we get the Habs down, we have to kick them…repeatedly! It’s like an MMA match, when you have your opponent weak in the knees from a punch…do you watch him wiggle because he’s lost his senses? Or do you pounce and destroy? They have to pounce tonight…

by Wags24 on May 12, 2010 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

What the Pens have to do is: !) Score first2)Not allow a score within 2 minutes of us scoring a goal3)contain Cammillari. If you look at the series, we lost when that did not happen.

by Outcast on May 12, 2010 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

You forgot:

4) Play 60 minutes.

5) Kick Halak in the Sami Salo.

6) Remove Hal Gill’s soul.

That should do it!

If they manage to do what I suggested there will be no OT.

by Outcast on May 12, 2010 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought of that. It will only go to OT if we don’t play the first 60 minutes, beginning to end. OT will be about the Pens making up for the minutes they took off during regulation.

I hope it doesn’t go to overtime. It will make for a great finish, but I don’t know if I can take it!

Leafs fan living large in the Pitt and pretending like the drought is over. Go Pens!

by PopRocks on May 12, 2010 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

by Outcast on May 12, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

5) Kick Halak in the Sami Salo.

That made me LOL. When I told my dad that Sami Salo ruptured a testicle, he was horrified.

Agree with all of the above.

by Outcast on May 12, 2010 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Containing Cammalleri would be a GREAT place to start! I believe that if Cammalleri and Halak do not bring their A-game…the Habs are toast! Funny thing is, if you think about it, Canadiens have been playing out-of-their mind hockey…I truly don’t think they can get any better than they have been (Suffice to say, that’s still pretty darn good). The Pens; however, can get better. If they do and perform the way everybody knows they can….Good Night Habs! It’s over!
