Sidney Crosby asked, declines offer to go to World Championships
Canada called on Sidney Crosby, just to let him know he could come to Germany and play with them in this year's World Championships (an event Jaromir Jagr, Steven Stamkos and Alex Ovechkin are participating in, among others). It's been a very long season for Sid, and he's played a lot of hockey the past couple years, so he's declined to make the long trip.
Chalk that up as a good idea, Crosby's got nothing to gain from the WC's, he's better suited to rest and recharge for now before getting a full summer of training in preparation for next season.
Reports are Canada may be looking to add a forward from Pittsburgh though, with Jordan Staal, Max Talbot and Tyler Kennedy all listed as possibilities. I doubt Staal will go, especially with his foot injury, but perhaps a player like Max or TK could represent their country.

No surprises here
If there’s anybody on the team who could use some time away from the game at this point, it’s Sid, so I don’t think that’s a shock to anybody that he’s taking a pass here.
However, I could see Max going, just to get in a little extra hockey because he missed a good deal of the regular season. Also having the chance to represent Canada, which isn’t an opportunity that comes around too often, is a nice plus for a guy like the Superstar.
That's like a pumpkin pie right in the face!
The article I read didn’t mention Kunitz.
And frankly, if they have watched any hockey they’d know the best Canadian on the team (other than Sid) has been Matt Cooke. But with Cooke about to become an UFA, who knows if he’d jeopardize his next contract with a potential injury in Germany. I know I sure wouldn’t.

True. I was only thinking about forwards, which is their area of need with Ryan Smyth and Stamkos suffering injury.

Ha! I wondered if they’d call on Sid! And I’m glad (for the Pens and for him) that he declined.
Hopefully it doesn’t increase the Sidney Crosby bashing in Canadia, though. I don’t think it will, but fodder is fodder, I suppose. All day I’ve been getting messages from friends like “Thanks for the gold, Sid. Now go home!” … and other less tasteful ones …

Yeah I know it’s probably because he needs a break, but I like to imagine that after all of the ungrateful booing and burning of jerseys, Crosby said “Sorry, but screw Canada” and hung up.
I hope he did that…obviously he would never say that (maybe not even in private), but he’s got to be a little upset at the way he was treated by some of the Canadian fans.
You don’t have to like him or cheer him because he’s playing for the other team, which is perfectly understandable, but you can’t have a little respect?

Would've been cool
to see a pissed off Sid go to Germany…he’d probably tear it up. All of the sudden there would be a huge hockey story in Germany (Sid and Ovi leading their respective teams), that would give the NHL a run for their money.
That’s all in theory though. Although Sid said he was healthy last night, he’s bound to be at least a little banged up. I’m glad he declined….if anyone needs rest, this poor guy does.
Which reminds me…when does the team have their final media day; is it tomorrow?

I don’t think Sid will be booed or otherwise treated (more) unfairly for turning down the Worlds. Other than Montreal fans, I don’t think you’ll find Canadians booing him, and the commentary on the reaction to the win by Montreal fans has been very negative towards those fans. People are not impressed. As much as I would have loved to see him in Germany, my home country though I am Canadian, I’m glad he said no. He said he was healthy last night. But….healthy is different than not injured and they didn’t ask about injury. I’m not convinced there isn’t something up considering how physical Ottawa was, the puck off his foot, the cut to his wrist. It could be minor, but minor feels a whole lot worse after losing than it does after winning. I’m glad he is taking the break. Though I’d love him to help Canada win, in this case I want him totally healed, rested and strong to help my Pens win next year.
Bad decision…I heard Gonch is going too.
I guess Geno’s not injured after all. I think he’s got to get his priorities straight before he does anything else.

Agreed. I was about to post about Gonch. Part of me understands. Outside of North America, the World Championships and Olympics are the pinacle of hockey success. They both grew up with that. But, the Pens fan in me wants the priority to change. Geno apparently is not injured, at least not enough to worry about playing another series of games. That leaves the problem that he just didn’t play well. If it’s due to fatigue, going to Germany can’t help. For Gonch, he played horribly that last game. Maybe he also wants redemption for that or the Olympics. I don’t know. It’s probably just due to growing up with the Worlds and Olympics being a priority for both, but I worry about the priority given that neither or them has been playing all that well, and certainly not consistently.
Gad to see Malkin taking a chance
Maybe Geno can go tear it up and become the beast we want him to be again. And sorry, I’m not up on the Worlds, how long does that last? I’d have like to have seen Sid go as well.

Those Russian guys have a lot more sense of “duty” (if that’s the right word) to never say no to playing for their country. Especially after the stinker of the Vancouver Olympics.
Whether that’s a good thing or not, who knows. I don’t think there are too many games left to play, and the game’s on the bigger ice surface with usually less physical play, so I don’t think it’ll hurt Malkin, even if another week or two of rest might be ideal at this point.

It’s true, Russians care more about representing their country abroad than we do, and take the World Championships more seriously. Just because Malkin is playing doesn’t mean he’s perfectly healthy. He could be banged up but able to play, just like he was able to play additional rounds of NHL hockey if his team needed him — doesn’t mean he’s not hurting and tired. I’m not saying I think he’s injured just that we don’t really know.
I think the additional piece is that Crosby won at the Olympics, while Malkin & Gonchar experienced a rather large disappointment — for themselves and from their country.
I’m with most of y’all in thinking that it would be better if they didn’t play, but maybe the change of venue will do them some good.

Russian Patriotism
Yes, I agree that the Russians need to make up for the Olympics.
I love Geno, but is it just me or is it a Russian trait to be a bit bi-polar when things don’t go your way.
Gonch gave up before game 7 was over. I was hoping it was a nagging injury … what is his excuse now? No contract?
Geno goes into a funk … mood swings?
Even Ovi had trouble getting to his game after the olympics
Sid brings it every day.
Wouldn’t be ironic if the Caps sign Gonch? If so, hopefully they overpay him.

I’m sorry but the world championships are meaningless. A majority of the best players in the world dont waste there time by going. Good for Sid…rest up my friend.
I don’t think they’re meaningless. It’s just a different type of stage. It’s true that “a majority of the best players in the world” don’t go there, but there are lots of reasons for that. Like Crosby needing/wanting some time off; like players still being in the NHL playoffs; like injuries; etcetera. It’s a fairly significant commitment to go, and the pressure of quickly fitting into a new team, with new linemates and systems, etcetera, doesn’t work for a lot of guys.
The “best players in the world” are in a fortunate position of having several opportunities to play for championships. The choice of whether to play in the worlds is really a choice about what’s best for them — not about thumbing their nose at the worlds.
Leafs fan living large in the Pitt and pretending like the drought is over. Go Pens!
Malkin and Gonchar have accepted invitations to the World Championships. As Seth from EN put it for two guys that looked completely gased at the end of the year I find this a little strange.
Gonchar I understand. he needs to try to redeem him self for this past season. Malkin I don’t understand 300 + games in the past 3 seasons he need to rest
Im surprised that Gonchar is going as well considering hes a UFA and is taking a bit of a risk.

I’m surprised Russia even wanted him. They could of easily found a parking pylon to put out there instead for the other teams to skate around.

to be honest this might sound bad, but I was kinda hoping to find out that Malkin was playing thru an injury. He didnt look like the same player this season. I dont think he would be going to play for Russia if he was injured. Thats very dissappointing.

I, too, was surprised/disappointed. In their press conferences today, though, they said some interesting things.
Malkin talked about not wanting to say no to his country.
Gonchar talked about wanting to win, and not having many more opportunities at championships, given his age.
This is a championship that Russia may very well walk away with, so I can kind of see their motivation.

Hello, I have been lurking here for a long time and I finally got the chance to post. I followed Sid’s decision to decline the invite for Team Canada on TSN.ca. Big mistake. Love how a lot of people there are ripping him to shreds for not going. Plus, they are bringing up the fact that Pavel Datsyuk has played more hockey than him in the last 3 seasons/postseasons and was also at the Olympics. For as much as people complain he is a whiner, boy do they whinge aplenty about everything he does or doesn’t do.

With stuff like this I like to organize the TSN comments from “highest rated” to “lowest rated”. The ones with the highest score are usually okay … and the lowest rated ones are either just awful, or good for a laugh (in that roll-your-eyes sort of way).
But I agree with your sentiment: our fellow Canadians need to back off and stop treating Sid the way they do! Maybe it’s because I’ve been in the United States for most of his NHL career, but I am really surprised at how people — even friends of mine — treat him (especially this year!).
Leafs fan living large in the Pitt and pretending like the drought is over. Go Pens!
What doesn’t make sense is, for all the haters here in Canada, as soon as he shows up anywhere, people clamour to get his photos and autographs. I was at Scotiabank Place for Game 6, killing time before the game kicked off, and Crosby came out to the Pens’ bench (say at about 5:30-5:45). You should have seen fans, many of them in Sens jerseys, running over to the players’ bench to get pictures of him. Same deal at the ACC, when the Pens played there in October. There were adults and kids in Leafs’ gear screaming for him as soon as he took the ice for the pre-game warm-up. Plus, they were clicking away like crazy. At the Hockey Hall of Fame, everyone wanted a photo beside the photo of the Pens’ winning the Cup.
Don’t bother about comments on TSN, Yahoo, or really anywhere (even most SBN hockey blogs, Pensburgh and about a handful others aside, don’t have the highest quality comments or commenters, though blog authors are always solid).

Rather pathetic, actually. They keep bringing up how he didn’t win the medal for Canada all by himself in Vancouver. Okay, but he scored the game-winning goal!! But again, if it hadn’t been for Iginla’s pass, etc. (who made the pass to Iggy after the puck got caught in the ref’s skates? Yeah, I thought so)…what a bunch of morons. Plus, lots of blah blah blah about how he didn’t show up for the Montreal series, etc. Whatever. People will always hate.
if Sid can block out that crap Pens fans should be able too. Who cares what they think. If Sid was on their team they’d be saying the opposite. Im actually glad Sid has his priorities straight. Maybe a few teammates could learn a little something from him.

Oh for sure. I had an argument with an ex-best friend last year after the Stanley Cup because he complained that Sid was disrespectful to the Wings for not running to the handshake line quick enough (not that that ended our friendship). Of course when it was pointed out that the Wings kept the Pens standing around for an extra 30 seconds or a minute after they won in 2008, he went silent. He and I haven’t spoken this postseason because he’s a Habs fan and I don’t think I can bear to hear him gloating (he also ripped me to shreds for admitting at the beginning of the 2008-2009 season that I was a Pens’ fan before I was a Habs’ fan). Sigh…
Interesting take on Kris Letang…apparently he cant do anything that Gonchar can do and is not worthy of the title of offensive defenseman……appparently players are not allowed to grow into a role they must be 50 pts players instantly in the NHL or they are overrated .

I hate sites with a waiting period (sorry Pensburgh, can’t recall if you have one). What are they afraid of, that I’m going to walk out of the store and start shooting people with their blog?
They lost me at the very beginning of their rant. The fact that the top two seeds in the West are in the conference final does absolutely nothing to prove that they are the superior conference. It is just as easy to say that the West is not as deep as some may have thought. I’m not really arguing the point, simply saying that this is not evidence to prove that point.
As for Letang, clearly he is not at 23 the offensively skilled defenseman that Gonchar is at 36. I’m glad they pointed that out for us.

I would too. I like him a lot and he is a defensive defenseman. What did Eric Staal say on the radio yesterday? It was always the eldest and youngest against the middle brothers. If they can play for Carolina, why not have Jordan and Marc suit up for the Pens? Glen Sather remains in a job despite signing Redden and Gomez to over-inflated contracts. Mind you, he found a bigger sucker in Bob Gainey, who then acquired Gomez and his ridiculous contract. Cammalleri and Gionta have been the story all season and postseason for Montreal, Gomez not so much. Okay, no more Habs talk. Let’s hope Sather loses his mind and Marc comes to Pittsburgh.

I know I feel like I need to post the game face dude with his hair on fire except there is no game :-(. Listening to Versus right now talking about the “Marvelous Montreal” and “unbeatable Halak” and “who will stop Cammeleri”. Ugh. Sickening.
My sister thinks the winner of the Boston-Philly series will sweep Montreal. I am not sure. It’s a pretty good game though. Since the series with the Pens started, I stopped watching RDS and I stopped reading the Montreal Gazette online. The blackout still continues. And even though I love in Toronto, I seem to be surrounded by Habs fans everywhere I look! I don’t hate the Habs, hell, I used to support them, but I think it will take time before I can hear anything about them. So I switched off the Versus intermission report. I may even suck it up and watch the horrible NBC broadcast of the Chicago-San Jose game Sunday just so that I don’t hear about the Habs.
Actually, as much as we all want to hate on Montreal right now, it’s a beautiful city and it has so much charm and character. I lived there before moving to Toronto and I love them both. Can’t compare them but they are definitely great places to visit. Torontonians in general love Montreal but Montrealers can’t stand Hogtown.
Not to worry, I screamed obscenities at the Habs while I watched the series on Habs TV..er…CBC but in the end, I couldn’t hate them. The fans on the other hand? Not a problem. I was never as obnoxious as them when I cheered for the Habs and I would never dream of disrespecting any opposing player’s jersey (a la, Sid’s doormat jersey and Ovie’s ciggie-extinguisher jersey). Admittedly, my unworn Cammalleri tee is still hanging in my cupboard and it’s going to take me a while to decide what to do with it. My sister is packing up her Habs’ tees and giving them to the Salvation Army. She is a Pens’ fan living in Habs hell right now (she lives in Montreal).

I don’t hate the Habs. I just don’t think they were the better team. Yes HAALLLAAAK made some great saves but we just didn’t adjust or have the gas to get by their trap.
I would have to agree with you. The trap sucks the life out of everything. They definitely were not the better team. I didn’t think Halak was as brilliant in the Pens series as he was against the Caps but he still made some big saves and he had about 5 other goalies…er…defenseman to defend his net. If anyone can beat the trap, it’s Philly, as much as it pains me to say it. But I think the Pens were out of juice by that point. I am optimistic that this longer season will be good for them. And now they will know what it takes to defend their Cup so maybe we can expect back-to-back Cups in the coming years.
you know its funny, people who are fans of teams that play the trap never admit it. I was talking on another blog (college football) with a bloger there who is NJ Devils fan and he kind of dismissed it when I said we hadn’t beaten the Devils all season because we couldn’t get by their trap. “No, it’s a big game for both teams..” Whatever
I hope the coaches spend the summer studying the trap and taking it seriously, because now every team knows that it’s like kryptonite to Penguins. As much as we hate the trap (and I really, really hate it) we have to learn to deal with it.
Well, a lot of what Montreal does is supposed to be illegal.

It’s true. I don’t think we would have won the cup this year regardless of officiating decisions, but I’m still bitter about a lot of those non-calls… they crossed the line repeatedly.
They totally did. And Habs fans, including several of my friends, whined about Game 4 and used Don Cherry to back up their point about making calls in the Pens’ favour. And I am like, “but you won the bloody game.” So many non-calls against Gill and Subban in game 3 and I didn’t see Don Cherry raising a stink. The officiating was awful all playoffs long but some non-calls were blatant. But to hear Habs’ fans, you would think it was a conspiracy by Bettman to keep them down.
And it’s just so FRUSTRATING. That’s the word we keep using when we play the Devils. It’s like they’re not letting anyone do anything and it makes you want to punch a pillow.
I know Devils and Habs fans will say it’s just frustrating because we lose the games — and that’s part of it, but when other teams beat us the games are still exciting.
I hope the Pens find a way to deal with the trap. Admittedly, even when the Pens were losing to the Caps in the regular season, those games were great and fast-paced, even if the results weren’t necessarily to my liking. I hope there is a cure for the trap. Maybe the Pens’ coaching staff needs to study Philly’s defeat of New Jersey. And if they beat Montreal, those games may become compulsory viewing on how to beat the trap. One can always hope.
Hey, our guys were tired out from eating all those BK burgers on the trip down from Newark.

Yeah, my dad was in hospital at the time and with nothing to do, we convinced him to put on the game. God, I hate NBC broadcasts and their “name that squirt” segments and when we threw away that 4-1 lead, I was upset. But the game was still good. Then again, Washington doesn’t play the trap probably because they have no defense. Oh, I just went there (not that I hate the Caps or anything but am simply pointing out a fact).
Oh yeah, couldn’t push game time back a couple of hours and interfere with that auto show they had scheduled for the afternoon!

Exactly! They never want to stand up and beat their chest and say “WE ARE A TRAPPING TEAM” . That’s why I love the Pens they are not and never will be a trapping team
Oh the trap needs to die. I thought Jacques Lemaire’s retirement from coaching would have done that but then Montreal happened. Should be interesting. I still think Philly’s series against the Devils needs to be mandatory viewing for the Pens. Brodeur didn’t play badly and he was let down by his team but the Flyers still beat the trap.
I don’t hate the Habs
That’s cool. I hate them enough for both of us.

We used to go to games in Philly, but their fans became more and more physical in their displays of emotion. And their “security” seemed unwilling to do anything about it. So, they’re off our list now.

Sid leaving Mario

Well that and maybe he really doesn’t have anything left in the tank. Sure he could be a leader for Team Canada at the Worlds, given how young the team generally is and how much he’s accomplished. But he must be pooped.
Nahh it’s not because he’s moving. Not much would ever trump hockey for Sid. I think he’s tired, banged up, and (he has to be at least) a little pissed off at the way he was treated by the Canadian fans.

Okay, do we mean Canadian or Canadien fans? Because Canadien fans will boo anyone and anything that is not in the blue, white, and red. In Ottawa, the fans poked fun at Fleury but never once did the fans chant “Crosby sucks” like Habs fans did (all they did was chant “Go Sens Go”). He’s probably a little pissed off that the better team, a la the Pens, didn’t win but he’s probably got no energy either.
I think he’s a little pissed off at Canadien fans (sorry, my Firefox spell check gave me the red line and I changed it to “Canadian” without thinking). I honestly think he’s a little pissed they booed him and did the stupid chant. They were bowing to his feet just over two months ago and actually cheered him when he played in Montreal in the beginning of his career.

You think? I think he’s basically tired. Besides, not appearing at the Worlds won’t affect Habs’ fans in the least because all they care about now is their team winning the Stanley Cup. They have been waiting 17 years, you see.
As for them booing him, hell, they booed their own goalie when he was named third star during the regular season. During their first playoff home game against Washington, they booed Halak when he was pulled. Now they are all singing his praises. Crosby shouldn’t let that rubbish get to him. Habs fans need any excuse to boo and any target will do.
I thought they did, but I wasn’t sure. I think that was more out of frustration than anything. I also remember it being reported that the Sens fans chanted “Crosby! Crosby!” when they were doing the hand shakes.

There were tons of Pens fans at Game 6 in Ottawa and they were all chanting Crosby because the Pens clinched the series and he was on the ice being interviewed by Elliott Friedman. The only Pen really being heckled during the game was Fleury and when the Sens, went up 3-0, the heckling continued. Actually I still can’t get over how many Penguins fans were at that game. The Ottawa fans, who hadn’t left by that point, gave their team an ovation when they saluted the crowd.
Haha can't believe this turned into a game thread.
Always fun to read game threads. Just fun.

The Habs Are the Better Team
Sorry. I know this isn’t a popular thing to say here, but as the old adage goes, “The better team ALWAYS wins a 7 game series.” Its true in this case, too.
The Pens have more talent, but it takes a lot more than talent to win — esp. in the playoffs.
Not sure I buy the 93 Islanders being better than the Pens.

I am curious to see if Philly can beat the trap again. If so, that has to become mandatory viewing for all top seeds (hell, even Chicago had trouble with the trap Nashville played, though they overcame it). Let’s see. Last night’s game was pretty exciting and I want to see what happens in the Eastern Conference Final. Hated the Flyers for 3 years straight, even if Pronger came this season, but I am actually pulling for them.
Sorry, the better team has a good chance of winning a 7 game series, but it’s not automatic. That’s just a way for people to tell themselves that the playoff system is good enough.
Even 82 games isn’t enough to perfectly determine the better team. so 7 certainly isn’t going to be enough. As Gabe Desjardins said, the Habs are the luckiest team in the league right now.
