I’m told the Penguins are not entertaining the possibility of trading C EVGENI MALKIN, the 2009 NHL scoring champion and playoff MVP and, with a $8.7 million salary-cap hit, the franchise’s co-highest paid player.
In other news, this shocks no one, disproving only a theory projected by one writer that was later picked up by more writers and will, in response, be turned down throughout the course of the day/week/month/offseason.

Love what a biased, hack journalist Rossi is. He threw in the salary Malkin’s making at the end just for spite.
Exactly. As if the team is crazy to keep him.

Maybe he comes up with a trade Staal story later… just to screw with us… or MAF…
in fact, I’m calling it right now…
After about a year and a half, I've finally got around to giving myself a profile. Yay me!
Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.
he writes a “trade staal” story, i am going to cuss like crazy. i went through the trade staal stage already, thank you.

I’ve never heard of this guy, but his reputation will be forever marred in my eyes. He’s buddies with Geno one minute and then stabs him in the back. Now he’s trying to save face. I would say that’s classic Pittsburgh journalism, but that would lump him with my favorite city. So I’ll just call him an ass.
Pirates, Vikings, Hokies. I'm used to heartbreak. At least I have the Penguins....

He's crossed the line this time
He went on Mark Madden the other day and said that he didn’t like Geno and that they didn’t get along (I’m not exactly sure what exactly was said as I heard it second hand). His newspaper articles almost seem to be apart from his other forms of expression.
I read what he writes for the paper and also his online blog “Chipped Ice” through which he plays the name-dropping insider. He constantly brags about conversations he has with different players like they’re good friends. I remember one particular entry when he talked about how Petr Sykora told Geno that Rossi was a good guy and that he could be trusted.
Rossi is at the same time, the best and worst beat reporter. He obviously has a rapport with many of the players, but when he rips them in the press he betrays their trust. I’m not saying that he should constantly stroke the team when it is undeserved, but when he jumps on the “trade Malkin” bandwagon and says that he doesn’t get along with Geno, I think it’s pretty obvious that (like the recently fired Michel Therrien) he’s “lost the room.”

Interestingly enough
We had a pretty extensive discussion about Geno today over at PPP (like 80 comments go check it out). So here is an unofficial summary… oh, and keep in mind we leaf fans generally have neutral to positive feelings towards the Pens (at least at PPP):
His past “bad” (i mean he broke top20 in scoring playing 67 games with Fedotenko/Poni/Talbot for f*** sakes! ) season notwithstanding, we think he is somewhere between the third best and the best player in the world, a guy who could be one of the leading players of his generation. If the Penguins trade him, the deal has gotta be something crazy. As in, if we got him for Schenn+Kessel it’d be robbery.
I suggested this and PPP thought you guys might actually win it
From San Jose – Pavelski + Setoguchi + Cotoure for Malkin straight up.
My ultimate conclusion:
Malkin won the Conn Smythe with linemates like Talbot/Dupuis/Fedotenko. When Geno/Sid/JStaal are all at near peak performance they are insanely difficult to matchup against. All they need is the goaltending & d to hold up and they are pretty much unbeatable. They should sign a Hamhuis/Michalek, and a winger better than poni. If Malkin regains the form he had for 2 years, then they will lose the best player in the trade pretty much no matter what.
Sorry bout the long post, just thought you guys might like an outside view. Shero is smart, Rossi=nob.
i love you guys over there. and i love when you come here. thanks for y’all’s thoughts.

Absolutely agree, he’s probably the default #3 after a “down” year…and what the other two accomplished this year. It would be insane to trade him….it would be nearly impossible to win that trade if you’re the Pens.
Heh … not that it would ever happen, but you just made me wonder about a Malkin-Ovi trade. It’s really not clear to me who would ‘win’ that one! Skill sets aside, I cannot imagine Ovi in the Pens’ locker room, hanging out with Staal & Sid. Besides which, most of the fans’ heads would explode ..
Go, Shero, Go!!! And also Brian Burke.
Washington would not make that trade. He’s the anti-Crosby….and that’s working for them both on the rink and in the bank.
These are kind of the points. I’m by no means imagining a trade like this would ever happen, or advocating that it should. But I’m wondering what the world would be like if it did. It would be terrible for the Pens because there’s just too much animosity, and the Crosby-Ovechkin thing would no doubt blow up in the locker room. On the other side, the Caps would lose the face of their franchise, and their dynamics would change so dramatically they wouldn’t really seem like themselves any longer.
On the other hand, the Pens would have their elite winger, and the Caps would have a powerful center who would boost Semin & Laich (or whoever ended up on his wings) to new heights.
Overall, both teams would lose. But it’s not clear to me who would lose the least — and thereby “win” the trade.
Go, Shero, Go!!! And also Brian Burke.
oh man.
i’m imagining this.
and it is really quite funny.

I really hope they come back and continue to throttle the Habs. If the Habs keep winning, then their trap and parking all five guys in front of the goaltender crap will catch on league wide, and another lockout will ensue.
Go Flyers! Hockey as we know it is in the balance!

Hockey is more important than hating the Flyers.
by SlayerGhaleon on May 20, 2010 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions
The trap should be banned. It sucks the life out of the game. Philly needs to figure out how to beat it. I think they will. The Habs fought back and were more physical than previously. LOL we know he FLyers can by physical. I think they take this series and send the trapping Habs back to Montreal for the summer.
Go Flyers?
Obviously you haven’t been a Penguins fan for long… I can see where you’re coming from when you say you don’t want the Habs style of play to catch and create another lockout, but under no circumstances should a Pens fan root for Philly. Regardless of who comes out of the east, the west is going to steamroll right over them.
by Mario's Mullet on May 21, 2010 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree with you.
The West has been sooo much better this season, and it’s insane. I’m rooting for the Sharks, but, if the Hawks get it and the Flyers advance I’d have to stab my eyes while watching the Stanley Cup Finals.
As a recent Penguins fan, rooting for the Flyers doesn’t pain me as much as it would for others, so you do have a point with that.
I, however, have my limits and I refuse to say the words “go flyers”.
No, I’ve seen enough Pens-Flyers game to hate them.
by AppleSweetRose on May 21, 2010 12:58 AM EDT up reply actions
Even if the Habs get steamrolled in the finals, the fact that they got there means their style of play will catch on. This will kill hockey. And as I said, hockey > hating the Flyers. Because if there’s no hockey, what’s the point of hating the Flyers to begin with?
by SlayerGhaleon on May 21, 2010 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions
I know it’s terrible to say because it is Philly and all but please, anyone but the Habs. And Lapierre needs to be beaten up. I would never wish that on a player, ever, but the CBC cameras caught him on the bench yesterday and man was he annoying, more so than normal. I have always known that but I think I hate him more than ever. And I don’t normally hate anyone.
the way you feel about Lapierre, is pretty much how other fans think of Matt Cooke. As a Pens fan, and sports fan in general, I despise the notion of 2nd favorite team.
I have had second favourite teams in other sports before. Actually, not entirely true because the Habs were my second favourite team for a while in the NHL as well. No longer. And I don’t even hate them because they beat the Pens. I hate their fans. Maybe that doesn’t make me a real fan but I am truly sick of the Habs’ “Cinderella” run. They did deserve to win last night though but I still don’t like them.
Yes, Cooke is a dirty player and the headshot was horrible and he should have been suspended for it. But correct me if I am wrong, won’t he at least stand and fight when he has to (Kane’s knockout notwithstanding)? You need to look at Lapierre. It’s fine to chirp from bench but watch when he got his derriere handed to him against the Islanders in one of the last games of the season.
It’s funny you say that, because Cooke has a bit of a rep. as someone who picks fights but doesn’t follow through. That’s part of his charm, though. He will certainly fight when he has to, but he has this ability to make other players completely lose their senses and take stupid penalties/throw the first punch. I always wish they’d mic Cooke up during a game, because I think it would be hilarious to hear what he says.
Of course, they probably couldn’t share most/any of it on television … but maybe they could just e-mail me the audio file …
Go, Shero, Go!!! And also Brian Burke.
No, but i see its 3-0.
Pretty much knew Habs would win this one.
The key is game 4 – always the most PIVOTAL.
If the Trunk Monkeys can head home up 3-1…
I used to hate the Flyers more than Boston and pretty much any other team. However, the enemy of my enemy…and I absolutely hate Habs’ fans right now. I was never obnoxious like that when I was a Habs’ fan (say up until 2 weeks ago).
Wow, the Habs are better actors than I thought. And yet another non-call against them for a high-stick.
PENS!
My two favorite teams in the NHL are the Pittsburgh Penguins and whoever’s playing the Philadelphia Flyers! GO HAWKS! (right now anyway)

Can we please band together and get Rossi fired! I would say, for how much he is getting paid, it’s WAY too much! I understand reporters are supposed to be unbiased, I got ya! But for crying out loud this guy is an idiot! He clearly knows very little about the game of hockey if he only sees goals and money being paid…plain and simple, I say let the Pensburgh guys do his job…the topics on this page are 500x better than anything Rossi comes up with!
by Wags24 on May 20, 2010 8:43 PM EDT reply actions
Well as much as I appreciate the praise (and I’m sure the rest of the staff here does too), I’m not really one for messing with a guy’s livelihood. Rossi is, in the end, just doing his job. And while I may not have been the biggest fan of him most recently, and especially when I tried to introduce myself to him in the past and he completely blew me off, I still think that he’s doing his job well. Speculation and whatnot is, to an extent, part of his job. But being a complete jerk about it in terms of still thinking that it’s ludicrous to not trade away Malkin is a bit much.
In the end, I’m not out to see Rossi get fired for his work. If personality and ego were factors in his employment he would’ve been fired a long time ago. Same can be said of most journalist/beat writers. But his work does speak volumes for his credibility and, every once in the while, he’s bound to go off the deep end.

Very true!
I had a lot of experience in the military with the press and I will tell you what, just like Rossi, there are a lot out there that will print something without getting their facts straight. Unfortunately, that’s the world we live in. When it comes to that type of standard in the world of journalism…Rossi is fitting right in!
Also, keep up the good work on here! I am relatively new to this site but have been hooked for the past few weeks! Good to be around people that are Pens’ fans. Good opinions or not…doesn’t matter…just good to hear what everybody thinks!

Wow he blew you off? That makes me dislike him even more!

Thanks
Yeah, I’ve never been a fan of Rossi’s work. That sort of admission is really taboo in the print media, but honestly I think that’s what sets bloggers apart, aside from the fact that we can post whenever we want and oftentimes as a result scoop the “real” media, at least until they embraced Twitter.
Honesty is a scary thing sometimes.
But when you think about it, wouldn’t Twitter seem like the perfect fit for an egomaniac journalist? Doesn’t he want to be the go-to source for everything? It’s a great chance for a team writer to get eyes from out of the newspaper’s normal circulation.

Too true.
Very superficial and such.
But personally I think it’s a great way for fans to follow updates on articles about sport.
I could spend ages reading an articles that’s been linked in twitter, haha.

Ok, if Rossi was on a rant before, he’s really going to be on one now…Check out Geno’s stats from the World Championships…
3 goals 4 assts 6 points +4 1 GWG
I’m glad Geno is playing well. Even had 2 yesterday against Canada! See, kid still has it!

What a jackass
He knew that from the start. Please don’t post anymore of his comments. He’s going to start to think he is popular by writing idiotic comments. Just to get people talking about him.
On Mark Madden’s show yesterday, Tim Benz put forth the theory that Rossi knew all along that what he was about to say was ridiculous and printed it only so that the team would then get the opportunity to deny it, shoring up Geno’s confidence in his position.
I think it’s giving Rossi a little too much credit on one hand, and on the other hand if it’s true, then Rossi is clearly too close to the team he’s supposed to be covering impartially. (This sort of yellow journalism is nothing new at the Trib, mind you, but it still never fails to annoy me.)
At any rate, I disagree with the idea that we should ignore him. Personally, I think the only way to deal with someone like Rossi, who apparently believes what he says and therefore isn’t a simple troll, is to expose them to as much light as possible. Only then will people realize the difference between quality work and this sort of nonsense.
All that said, it’s probably in everyone’s best interest to assume Malkin will not spend his entire career in a Penguin uniform. That’s a dangerous assumption to make, and if the Pens ever feel the need to move a big contract, I guarantee you it’ll be Malkin’s and not Crosby’s.
Yeah it’ll be Malkin no doubt.
But I so, so wish the day that he’s going to be traded never comes.
It might not.
Unless he like… absolutely tanks for a few years or he wants to move.
Either way, I’ll always be fond of the guy.
