Would you rather re-sign Ruslan Fedotenko or re-sign Alexei Ponikarovsky?

Good Post!
Ok, now I am not saying dude, we have to sign Poni. However, the guy has the numbers and most of those numbers came from playing on the Maple Leafs…that alone is saying something. Since there are not a whole lot of really attractive free agents out there, of course there are a few, I would say give Poni a shot. Give him one of those one-year offers…if he doesn’t take it, he walks. But it’s a good chance to see what he can do, LONG TERM, on a line with a great player like Malkin. Should be interesting to see but you have to admit, 20-goal scorers are hard to come by in the NHL. I say, give him 1 year! It’s hard to judge on what we have seen in such a short amount of time.

Sixth.
This is like choosing between a root canal (with no pain medicine) or a colonoscopy.
No thanks.

10th… how far is this gonna go?
After about a year and a half, I've finally got around to giving myself a profile. Yay me!

I considered making that an option. But I think what I plan on doing is narrowing down past the first round here and advancing to the next based on vote count. We’ll see though. Might not even need to with such overwhelming vote counts.

Kraft!
Would you consider Krafty a bust or what? Kidding…yeah, that was a tough draft pick! But he never got 20 goals in a season. I’m just sayin…

compared to the likes of Robert Dome no….

That could be a good debate...DOME vs KRAFT.
The only big difference I can see is that Dome never really had big numbers. When Kraft was playing the the WHL, he did have pretty darn solid numbers. Even in the AHL he had decent numbers…just never really materialized in the NHL. Guess that’s the chance you take.

If Kraft tried to bank the puck off the back of the net to himself one more time I swore I’d stop liking him.
He never stopped, but somehow I never gave up on him.
Very frustrating player. So much talent, just couldn’t quite unlock it at the NHL level.

I always thought Kraft was talented as well. Idk for whatever reason I was a huge fan back in the day. Is he still playing in sweden or something?

Yeah I remember reading something last offseason that he wasn’t re-signing in the Czech league.

I most also vote NEITHER
Both were HUGE let downs this past season. I’d rather see just about any free agent or even Tangradi if he’s ready to step up to the NHL.

I think Poni played just poorly enough to work for fedotenko-money so I’d pick him. If he’ll take 2 or less, I don’t see that many wingers out there at that level. He started to look like he was working by the second round, and lets not kid ourselves, nobody really produced in that series.
Agreed!
You never know what the guy could do in a full season. He had pretty darn good numbers with Toronto so he might be worth a shot…however, like you guys said, said the price ceiling on his contract. If he doesn’t take it….Good-bye! Have fun in Atlanta!

It might be worth it to give Poni a 1-year deal with a below market contract number. If he can turn it around next season, good for him…if not then he’s fine in a bottom 6 role, and we haven’t burned through too much cap space.
if not then he’s fine in a bottom 6 role
I disagree. He doesn’t really fill the bottom 6 roles very well. His skill set is as a scoring winger. If he’s scoring (and making plays), that’s great. But if that’s not working out, he either needs to get new skills, go to a new team, or retire.
I’d take him over Feds, and I have a soft spot for him, but I don’t think he fits into the bottom 6.
Go, Shero, Go!!! And also Brian Burke.
I just threw-up a little!
Ok, not really, but ouch! Traded my favorite player growing up for a Minor Leaguer….ouch!

which is why someone will give him $3 – $3.5/yr contract this offseason. I’m glad it won’t be the Penguins.
Still after this bomb of a performance?
I’m thinking he’ll get like $2-2.5 million if he’s lucky.
But I’ve underestimated the UFA market before..

Yes, unfortunately the crop is pretty weak….and he’s a proven 20 goal scorer despite how “Pens” fans feel about him.
Exactly. There’s so little to work with this year outside of Kovalchuk and maybe Kariya (for name recognition and reputation, not for recent performance) that middling guys will get overpaid just because they can.
I know that Selanne’s retiring. Am I right in remembering that Tkachuk is as well?
also at the Thrashers blog….The Falconer has Afinogenov projected at $4.0m for next year. I don’t really disagree with that, based on his play this year and based on what’s available. Plus they have the money to be able to pay that amount.
that still seems pretty high for a guy thats had 1 good year in the last 5. Again I guess the weak crop of FA’s would jack up his price.

I know this sentiment may not be very popular, but I think the Pens try to keep Poni. Feds lost me towards the end of the season when he iced the puck about 5-6 feet away from the blue line because he was about to get hit. He could’ve gone 50 games without scoring, but when any one of his teammates would’ve taken the hit to get the tired guys off the ice, that pisses me off.
As for Poni, he didn’t show much, but the reality is he’s a 50-65+ point a year guy. I hated that the coaches kept trying to stick him with Geno, who he just never meshed with, but he did look pretty good with Sid when Geno was down for a few games late. If Billy G doesn’t come back and Poni is willing to take a discount, I think he stays because of the lack of size on the first line (among other things). I was disappointed with his effort in the playoffs (as we all were), but you know the coaching staff told him to get his act together at the end of season meetings. Maybe Sid’s work ethic will even rub off on him.
I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
I can see the thinking that Poni and Geno never really played together until the playoffs. Maybe not enough time to develop any chemistry. But he was a healthy scratch in the playoffs. The guy created nothing offensively. That doesnt sit well with me. The scary part of it is, that he might be the best available in the pens price range.

Yikes what’s the lesser of two evils…well first I would say neither, but if I really had to pick one I’d say Poni. He’s bigger and younger. I love what Feds has done for us the past couple years, but I think his time in Pitt is up.

I'll take Poni
if he takes a 1 year deal for about 1.2 mil. If not, neither. Farewell, Tenk Top

Off topic, but...
….is this what Mike Lange meant when he said “It went in, pulled out by Hardy!”
Yikes
last night i was looking through pictures i had taken at a game. i saw #26 and i could not remember for the life of me who it was. i felt kind of badly. then i remembered how he fared in the playoffs and i felt a little less badly.

anyway...
if we talk same money Poni is a no-brainer…
Still “Neither” is my first choice answer
