Would you rather re-sign Jordan Leopold or re-sign Jay McKee?

The last and final "would you rather" for the Pens this offseason.  Once the votes tally up we'll get around to going a little more in depth with it all and matching them up differently.  I know yesterday's kind of threw some people off, but it's not a matter of money to keep them as much as it is the player.  Besides, I'm genuinely interested in seeing how you guys would like to see the Pens handle their free agents.  Some interesting points coming out of the comments recently and definitely things that will be taken into consideration as we go further into the free agents.

With that said, here's your last one:

I picked McKee

He fits more of the role of the defensive d-man that we need. He’s a big body and a good shot blocker…

Maybe I’m forgetting him playing terrible, but I honestly can’t remember him being bad… He seemed to be one of the better defensemen in the playoff and he will probably be cheaper than Leopold. I often wondered why he was a healthy scratch so many times in the playoffs.

I would probably lean less McKee and more Leopold if I knew we were not getting Gonchar back. Leopold has a big shot(not as big as Gonchar) and puts the puck on net pretty well and could probably at least diminish some of the loss on the powerplay if we lost Gonchar… but I’m still hoping we get Gonchar back which would mean we wouldn’t have as big of a need for another offensive d-man.

The biggest issue I saw with McKee during the playoffs was his lack of speed. He was solid positionally, but anytime a forward got the corner on him they blew by like he wasn’t there.

That’s the exact problem I had with Hal Gill next year….but somehow he was allowed to bear hug Crosby into submission.

Leo...

and if McKee can be signed for something like 1 Mio/year may be both…

You have to see it for yourself...

I picked McKee even if he is kinda slow. Leo’ recent concussion is a concern and I don’t think it is his first one. He didn’t seem the same afterward. The first game back he was good but then the other games….maybe he came back too fast. My friend’s 10 year old son had a concussion and the neurologist said DO NOTHING for 6 weeks, no video games, or text messages. After 6 weeks he will be retested. These guys come back way too soon

I think Leopold because he’s a better fit in Bylsma’s system and he’s three years younger (and possibly less expensive).

Pittsburgh sports all the way

Leopold. McKee can’t keep up with the Penguins anymore and I’m not so sure he is going to take a small contract again.

I honestly believe the Pens should only resign 1 FA defenseman and Leopold would be the best fit to return. The defense couldn’t cut it last year so bringing everyone back isn’t going to work. Fill in around the rest

McKee

definately McKee….when he was in the line-up,he was blocking shots and getting back on D. They should keep McKee and Eaton.

my worst fears have been realized….

After about a year and a half, I've finally got around to giving myself a profile. Yay me!

Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.

Same.

I about cried, really :(

Ugh, I refuse to root for the Hawks or Habs.
I suppose it’s come down to the Flyers.
I dunno :/

by AppleSweetRose on May 24, 2010 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Flyers… Only cause I used to root for Buffalo & Briere’s from there during the Hasek days… That and Hossa lifting the cup would just make me throw up blood.

There I said it, now I need a swim in a septic bath!

I don’t know. I am rooting for the Flyers to beat the Habs but I still want the Blackhawks to win it all. Love Toews and Duncan Keith (poor guy) and I think Hossa has been cursed enough. Besides, with the upcoming loss of personnel to free agency and cap considerations, I think the Blackhawks deserve it. Do they not remind anyone else of the Pens?

by silvsiara on May 24, 2010 5:55 AM EDT up reply actions

but wouldn’t you like to see Hossa’s dejected mug one more time? I know i would.

by AronV on May 24, 2010 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the Hossa thing needs to be let go…he didn’t owe us jack shit and we got revenge last year. I’m without a doubt pulling for the Hawks, it would be much much worse with Philly winning.

by JasonGoPens on May 24, 2010 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Nothing against the Hawks but I kinda think Hossa deserves ONE last cup final loss… I’ll be off his back after that…

My sister is convinced the Hossa curse is alive and well and that the Cup will go to Philly this year. I am not so sure. I think the ‘Hawks are just too talented to not win. Sure his dejected mug would be great but that having been said, I really like all the other players and would be very sad for them. My dream final would have been Pittsburgh-Chicago but since that won’t happen, I have to give props to the ’Hawks. Besides, I only want the Flyers to eliminate the Habs. After that, I want Chicago to win.

by silvsiara on May 24, 2010 9:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m with you there. Hossa (finally!) winning is definitely the lesser of two evils. Maybe he’ll just continue to slump through the playoffs, and make his 12 year contract look foolish.

Go, Shero, Go!!! And also Brian Burke.

by PopRocks on May 24, 2010 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

A friend and I were talking about his contract last year when he got it and while there is no doubt that the man is extremely talented, I am not sure he deserved the contract he got. And anyway, the big names in this campaign have been Toews, Byfuglien, Niemi, Keith (and especially yesterday after losing 7 teeth), Bolland, and a number of other players. Even Kane has done so much better than him. Hossa hasn’t scored many goals and he hasn’t been spectacular but the rest of the team is wonderful. I will definitely live with Hossa finally winning. I don’t think I could stomach Montreal winning their 25th Cup (yes, I still think they could come back) and anyway, my support for the Flyers lasts only if/until they eliminate Montreal.

by silvsiara on May 24, 2010 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Hossa has been playing with Bolland from what I’ve seen. Hes being used in more of a defensive role lately. He still I think should have a few more points than he does. I thought he played awsome in game 4

by genomachine-O on May 24, 2010 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I guess the complaint is that for what he’s paid, he should have been better. But the team has so much depth that I don’t think it matters. Besides, I think he’s due for a break. He lost last year against the team he left. Anyway, Go ’Hawks!

by silvsiara on May 24, 2010 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Heh … I was actually going to say "lesser of three evils … except I can’t decide whether I’d prefer Hossa to lose or the Habs to lose.

I’m obviously not quite over my Hossa-hate just yet. And I don’t have to live in a city over-populated with Habs fans ..

As for Hossa’s production: except for his run with the Pens, he’s generally known as a playoff disappearing act.

Go, Shero, Go!!! And also Brian Burke.

by PopRocks on May 24, 2010 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

That is true about Hossa. Oh well, I still think I want Chicago to win.

I was in Montreal as we had a long weekend and Habs’ fever is on, obviously. The Habs’ training facility is a stone’s throw from my parents’ house and it took all my courage not to look at it. Sounds like I am exaggerating but it’s been harder than I thought it would be. They really need to lose tonight, even if it is to the Flyers.

by silvsiara on May 24, 2010 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

outside of Hossa, I kinda like this Hawks team… Really want them to succeed…

I’m almost over my Hossa-hate… Just one more loss. He’s the first to make 3 finals with 3 different teams. One more loss and I’ll get off his back…

No one deserves to lose 4 times… Ever

The ‘Hawks are fantastic and again, they really remind me of the Pens. After watching tonight’s game though, I am not sure they will sweep the Flyers. A lot of people are bringing up the Hossa curse again but let’s see. Also, the ‘Hawks stand a good chance at losing Ladd, Versteeg, Sharp, and maybe Byfuglien after this season so I think I would like the group to win. Let’s see how it plays out. Should be exciting though.

by silvsiara on May 24, 2010 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

its going to be a tough series. As much as I hate to say it the Flyers are playing great right now. I think they hit their peak. I dont think CHI is playing their best hockey yet. We’ll see, I’ll be rooting my heart out against Philly. I could see it going 7 games.

by genomachine-O on May 25, 2010 7:22 AM EDT up reply actions

The Flyers have been great. They really woke up after Game 3 in Montreal and Richards was just fantastic last night. I, too, will be rooting against the Flyers even though I like Pronger and I am really excited for Chicago. Either way, I think it’s going to be a great series.

By the way, is it just me or has this year not produced the kind of classic series like last year’s Pens-Caps match-up? Okay, Game 7 was a letdown because I expected it to be close but that series definitely goes down as one of the best I have seen and I don’t just say that as Pens’ fan. Actually, let me rethink that. The Flyers coming back from a 3-0 deficit in the series and Game 7 against Boston was pretty darn good.

Same here

The Hossa thing was evened up last year for me, so GO HAWKS!
And yeah, they could live to regret that contract, mind boggling in this day and age.

i’m just surprised that the NHL let teams sign contracts for more than 10 years. How many players can even play 10 years in a physical league like this?

i’ll have to say Jordan Leopold over mckee. But i was wondering if sutton would sign for less than 3 mill. Just because it apparent that the pens need some size on the back end

We just inked Engelland… Odds are we’re not keeping Jay… At best his lack of speed makes him our healthy scratch d-man. That we have plenty of in Lovejoy, Engelland and the rest of the farm guys.
