PITTSBURGH - APRIL 30: Jordan Staal #11 of the Pittsburgh Penguins leaves the ice favoring one leg after a collision against the Montreal Canadiens in Game One of the Eastern Conference Semifinals during the 2010 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs on April 30, 2010 at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Yesterday Penguins fans were encouraged to see Jordan Staal back on the ice. Even if it was only a brief test run and he didn't have any gear on, simply skating just a few days after surgery to repair an injured tendon in his foot. Today Staal has taken another tangible step in his recovery by taking a full practice.
Before we get too excited and pencil Staal in the lineup for Game 4, James Mirtle on Twitter reported that Staal was "fighting that foot injury". An injury of this awkward type will probably require a full range of motion in the foot and the comfortability to play as well. That may take a little while, but given Staal's encouraging progress it may prove to be sooner than we realize.
