Sidney Crosby a finalist for Mark Messier Leadership Award
Always an honor to be nominated right?
The three finalists for the 2009-10 Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award presented by Bridgestone are Sidney Crosby of Pittsburgh, Shane Doan of Phoenix, and Ryan Miller of Buffalo. The announcement was made by Messier himself at Wachovia Center in Philadelphia on Wednesday prior to Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final.
The award will be announced later this month in Las Vegas when they hand out the rest of the real awards.

I can see this going to Miller. But it’s definitely Sid’s for the taking… ANyone know of any history behind this award or is this the first year?
I'm 21 now... I still feel 20 and I still feel way too old.
Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.
This is not the first year – might be second or third. I recall seeing Messier taking about it last year at the cup finals

first awarded in ‘06-’07.
STAAL FOR SELKE. SIDNEY FOR EVERY OTHER ONE OR JUST THE HART AND THE MESSIER LEADERSHIP AWARD. THAT IS ACCEPTABLE.

Yeah it was like 4 years ago…
I actually think Sid won the first one.
So wait, I thought this award was just about leadership? The way they were talking about it on Vs was that it was leadership AND community service.

chris chelios won it the first year. however, it used to be awarded monthly, and sid won it one month.

How was Mike Richards not nominated? For that matter, how has this not been renamed the Mike Richards Leadership Award?

Because Pierre McGuire isn’t giving out the award.

He had a few conflicts with the media earlier in the year, they’ll rename the award next season when things have cleared up ;)
How the NHL missed the opportunity to create another Crosby-Ovechkin battle is still baffling me. Are the guys that write the articles about ‘another chapter in the Crosby-Ovechkin rivalry’ busy or something?

Good point. I mean seriously, who even knows who Shane Doan is or that Phoenix still has a team? Replace Doan with Ovechkin, and whatever the award is, change it to look like a gold medal so that Sid, Ovie and Miller can fight it out again.
I was googling to find out what the award looks like, and came across this pic. R.I.P., Gary Coleman. Maybe they can rename it the Mark Messier and Gary Coleman Memorial Leadership Award.

Still by far one of the weirdest pictures in sports history.

I only want Sid accepting the award if it’s shape like Messier’s head.

That’s exactly what I want the trophy to be shaped as.

Does anyone else find it kind of amazing that Sid is still 5th in scoring and assists despite not making it past the 2nd round?

I have a feeling Sedin will win the Hart (deserved or not), so I’d love to see Sid get this one. He took his team further in the playoffs then the other two guys, plus winning the Rocket and getting nominated for the Hart will hopefully help his cause. Id hate to see him go home completely empty-handed this season. well save for the Gold medal of course :)

and the Rocket (but even that’s shared).
Sid won’t win the Hart, but I could definitely see him winning this award this year for two reasons. He was nominated last year and didn’t win and he really stepped it up in the community service this year (his foundation, the suite he buys for the kids, the 1200 kids he’s given hockey gear to).
