No progress on Hamhuis, Gonchar
Title pretty much says it all. It's looking increasingly likely that the Penguins won't sign either of them before the beginning of free agency tomorrow.

It’s looking increasingly likely that the Penguins won’t sign either of them before the beginning of free agency tomorrow.
Which isn’t surprising, or necessarily discouraging.
Gonchar hasn’t flat out rejected the Pens or announced he’s going to look somewhere else, so if you want him back that has to be a good sign. He knows the 2 year deal is the best Pittsburgh can/will do, now it’s all a matter of who might give him 3-4 years and will that team be good/good fit for him.
Hamhuis is still taking the pitch into consideration and only days away from the open market. It’d be foolish if he did sign, why not see what offers are out there? Still have no reason to believe Pittsburgh doesn’t have the inside track, the Pens have everything to offer that he wants (role, money, competitive team) except living on the west coast, which his agent said wasn’t a huge concern.
So we’ll see. Probably another day of the waiting game. I’m not concerned or surprised.
my problem with the Hamhuis negotiations is that we traded a pick for his rights. If we get bupkis from him, I’d call it a waste of a perfectly good third rounder.
By giving up an asset, being one the inside track is not good enough. Besides, he’s seen the pitch from the Preds & the Flyers. If we still have to go into the open market for him, I’d rather keep the pick and bide my time waiting for free agency.

I agree that it is very depressing to know that if we do not sign Hamhuis, we gave up a 3rd round pick to Philly for absolutely nothing. At the same time, I understand what Hooks has said before and that this could still benefit the Pens during open discussions with him after F/A begins. I would have not been upset with a 5th – 7th round pick, but a 3rd is hard to swallow.
I am still holding out hope though…
Very depressing? It’s a 3rd round pick. Obviously you never want to piss away assets, but as far as a 3rd round pick goes, come on. It’s not really a big deal.

okay, the term “very depressing” is a little over kill. I am not THAT depressed over it. However, it still seems like some good talent can be gained in the 3rd round. You are right that the opportunity to win is now and I can see how it would be worth sacrificing picks for the future.
Yeah, I have to admit that if they don’t manage to sign him, I’ll consider it wasteful, even if it wasn’t a terribly valuable pick that they surrendered.
The only part that would be depressing
is if he signs with the Flyers after all this nonsense. At least he’d be easy to hate that way.
No sure things.
Good risk to take, imo.

A 3rd rounder is no sure thing. Even if it was, by the time that player develops into an NHL player it would be 4-5 years down the road.
The idea is to win now. The window isn’t open forever. The idea to get inside positioning a top level defenseman in his prime makes it worth it.

Hockey is a business...
Just like anything else, in order to build a good product, every once in a while you have to take changes. You won’t get anywhere unless you’re willing to take a risk. In this case, it may pay not work, but just like HOOKS said, a 3rd rounder isn’t a sure bet either. That’s the way the game goes!

it’s not about going ballistic losing a third round pick…
my problem is just the giving up of assets in general. You guys are right, a third round pick may not pan out for us for a number of years if at all…. But mortgaging any semblence of our future depth is just hard to swallow…
Maybe if it was a 5 or 6 rounder.

I tend to agree, though I’ll withhold judgment from Shero until we find out what Hamhuis does in the end.

or whoever the Flyers draft with our 3rd and how he turns out… part of me just feels unclean about giving up a pick to the Flyers for potentially nothing.

Eh, he didn’t really see a ‘pitch’ from Nashville. Poile just let him go.
We have two defensemen better than him, and four that will be in three years. No reason to pony up 4M for a 27 year old when we can pay a 21 year old 1M to do similar work, y’know?

Tuesday night, Shero described his interaction with the Hamhuis camp as “ongoing discussions,” and rejected a suggestion that they could be characterized as negotiations.
This paragraph puts the nail in the coffin for me. It sounds like they haven’t even reached anything financial, and that Hamhuis is still deciding whether he’d even want to play for us.

The Media...
Ok, raise your hand if you think Shero is going to seriously tell the Media ANYTHING during negotiations like this? I, for one, do not think he would divulge any useful info when it comes to talking contracts with Gonchar and Hamhuis (or anybody for that matter). The media, and the fans, are on a need to know basis and honestly…nobody needs to know until that little text from the Penguins comes saying who is signed.
Don’t put any weight into the papers. With that being said, let the rumor mill run!

Have to believe at this point that we won’t have either next season.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
And frankly, I figured that’d be the case all along.
Love the Charlie Lau quote. I also liked the Bob Uecker one: “The way to catch a knuckleball is to wait until it stops rolling and then pick it up.”
Sad but true. And it’s sad to think how awful our defense could be next year. It’d be very unlikely that we could sign either Gonch or Hamhuis once they hit the open market, we won’t get Michalek or Volchenkov, and after that cluster there aren’t any top line pairing defensemen. What is Shero doing wrong here? It shouldn’t be hard at all selling this team to players.
It is a good quote, and I thought fitting as well as my uncle used to be a knuckleballer when he pitched. Another good one, I forget exactly, something like “Hitting Niekro’s knuckleball is like eating soup with a fork”
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
“Come play for the team that everyone (other than Pens fans) hates with a passion!”
Yeah, maybe the sales pitch isn’t everything we imagine it to be.
Also, I’m not sure I completely understand your certainty that we won’t be able to sign them after they hit the market. Presumably they both know already that other teams will be interested in them, so it seems to me that our chances of signing them after July 1 won’t be that much different than right now. Can’t blame either of them for wanting to test the waters first.
It’s like when I was buying a car several years ago. I knew I was going to get the Accord, but I still checked out some other cars first just to be sure I was making the right decision.

You’ll get booed everywhere you go in the NHL as a visiting team, it doesn’t matter who you play for. If you want to win, come to Pittsburgh, it’s as simple as that.

Right. I mean, he doesn’t “know what they’re thinking.” Sounds like he’s publicly questioning the direction of the team, and that’s usually reserved for people like prima donna wide receivers who have convinced themselves that they are integral to the team’s success.

Last summer I was extremely impressed with all the moves Burke made and I predicted a playoff spot for the Leafs (but none for Montreal and look at how wrong I was about both). Let’s see if anything happens with Kaberle tomorrow. But the Leafs, on paper at least, have a great team and I expect good results for them this coming season. I was hoping they would go for Sharp, Versteeg, and big Buff. 1 out of 3 ain’t bad.
Do you think Ladd will end up in the Eastern Conference? I was sort of hoping Pittsburgh would try for him too. Oh well…
Shero definitely would take a shot at him, but from what we’ve seen, I doubt we’ll get him. Shero’s priority is the D and we might not have enough left to convince Ladd to come here.

Ladd strikes me as a third line guy, pretty similar to Matt Cooke. I know the market is thin, so if we get him it’s not a bad move, but it shouldn’t be for a lot of money.

Center??
A first line with Versteeg as the left wing and Kessel as the right wing is impressive. Who is the center?? Savard?? I don’t see Tyler Bozak and Christian Hansen filling that role. If it is Savard who do they give up to get him??
Versteeg can play center too, though before it was just filling in at 3C.

The waiting game it’s what is all about for good managers. You don’t want to throw any more money than you have to, unless you are the Rangers. The palyers know it the GMs know it, who can blame them, it’s business. Not sports. After the dust settles it’s sports. Billy G has been around a long time, he’ll see if there’s anything out there, then the Pens will maybe come up with something or not, but it’s in his best interest as a professional to do it. Anyone else would do the same I hope if somebody offer them more money to do the same job. He already has the cup rings, and doesn’t have much time left to make money. Gonchar the same way. Folks we just have to wait and trust our man.
If Shero signs Leopold I’m questioning Shero and his intention of improving the defense. Having another puck moving defensemen isn’t good for this team. They locked up Letang and Goligoski for a reason. Maybe Shero should start to believe in them. He can’t continue to trade away draft picks and young players (Caputi) to get so called cheap but good replacement. (Ponikarovsky) Sooner or later he has to trust the young guys (Letang, Goligoski, Lovejoy, Johnson, Jeffrey and Tangradi
Good point.

Aside from Caputi, whose value we do not know yet, everyone he’s traded away has not been very good, so there’ no real net loss here.
Besides, that has nothing to do with re-signing Leopold.

i get where you’re coming from but I’m afraid of the precedent that this could set for us… we’re trading future assets for “loaners” who might not pan out (Poni) or if they do might not give us that many years of service (Guerin).
We’re still okay now since Sid, Geno, Flower & Staalsy are still young but where do we draw the line?
It may be 10 to 15 more years from now but I don’t wanna have to live through our pre-Sid, post-Mario dark ages again.

Offense is the best defense. The more time you spend in the opponent’s zone, the less time they have to score and the more tired and worn out they get. Good puck moving defensemen contribute to this style of play, and having Gogo, Letang, and Leopold as 3 of 6 starters does not handicap a team.
Now of course it’s important to have a guy or two who are really good at clearing space around the crease, and we have that with Orpik (hopefully one more like Hamhuis or Michalek). But it’s not a recipe for success to have a bunch of defensive minded defensemen at your blue line who are scared to play with the puck.
Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com
i still kinda subscribe to the cliche that defense wins championships. We can win in a system with more puck moving defensemen but there are definitely gonna be occasions where we need some stay at home D-men…
Free Candy’s our first, I’d be happier when we get a guy like Michalek, Tallinder or Hamhuis to help him close out games…

The whole “defense wins championships” mantra is difficult to apply to hockey though because offense and defense are really interdependent. Very talented puck moving defensemen help, imo, contribute to a very powerful offense which will win in the long-run.
Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com
i guess, but we still need d-men who can shut down the opposition and protect Flower. At least ONE pair who can consistently slam the door shut. And I think we’re all in agreement here that Tanger/FreeCandy is NOT a shutdown pairing.
