I guess he can change his mind, but I’d be surprised.
I wish we were playing GM mode in NHL 10, with no salary cap, right about now.

Heh.
Talk about breaking the bank. I think they’ll be regretting that deal by year 3.
By the way, Justin, what’s your source for these updates? I can’t find a good free-agent tracker anywhere – I’m currently using ESPN’s.

Yep, they’ll be regretting that signing about halfway through the deal. Or when it dawns on them he doesn’t really play D anymore.
Exactly my thoughts. If you want to give an over the hill D man 10% of your cap total…well, go for it.
I’m not mad about that. Don’t waste our time saying you want to stay in Pittsburgh when 20 minutes into FA you take the first big deal thrown your way. I know he’s not going to do anything there, but still.
"Half the game is mental, the other half is being mental." - Jim McKenny
I’m not surprised he took the first big deal thrown his way, because he sure wasn’t going to get anything like that deal from anybody else (including the Pens).
How do you know it was the first/only big deal thrown at him?

I’m not saying it was, I just think it was strange that it took him 14 minutes or whatever it was to decide on it.

I don’t see why you’re upset with him. He made his demands clear, and the Pens wouldn’t meet them. But the (godforsaken) Senators would.

I think Gonch is in a different situation than most since he’s a lot older and he’s not as mobile or agile as others who could diminish the impact of big hits.
Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com
I remember Gretzky saying that hockey is the toughest sport on your knees. After all the years Gonch put in, and Ovi’s hit last year in the playoffs, I’m going to wager quite a bit that his knees aren’t in the best shape.
Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com
Wow, we all just turned into anti-Gonchar fans in about 10 seconds.
I still like the guy. And I’ll still fear his shot from the point. But for what he wanted, and what the Pens were offering, you have to cut ties. Sorry buddy. And sorry Sens fans.

Sorry, I don’t know Ottawa’s cap situation. Are they normally right up against it? If not, then Sarge’s $5.5 million doesn’t really hurt them.

So Long Laser Surgeon
Sigh…I loved him as a Cap and a Pen. I’d rather see him in the West than the Sens, at least a team that can give him a chance at another Cup.
Everything sucks about Philadelphia.
So, Sarge is gone. Kind of wistful, but not TOO sad. (So long as he doesn’t undergo some career resurgence.)
But, where do the Pens go now? Hamhuis might be nice, but all along, I’ve hoped for Volchenkov.
So long as he doesn’t undergo some career resurgence.
At 36 years old, this is definitely not happening. And I’d be hesitant about signing Volchenkov because he’s really over-valued.
Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com
But, while I think Volchenkov wouldn’t be worth the money he’s asking, depending on interest, he may not command that much. (Shero has had a good recent track record with FA signings.) If no one bites on him for that much, wouldn’t he take less for a chance to play with the Pens? (Though, if they get Hamhuis before then, it becomes moot, I suppose.)
If he finds that no one wants him for the money he’s asking for, then I’d definitely want Shero to be interested in him.

Oh, he’s really really solid on D, 3.0 DGVT in just 22 games, but does it matter how good he is if you then don’t have any money left?
If the D shuts down the other teams offense, the same offense we had last season will look dominating.
But we’re out Guerin, Feds, and Poni at this point. They all had a positive influence on the O, even if only slightly.
Good points. We wont be replacing them with anybody from the Free Agency market. BillyG would be the most difficult to replace as he was, by far, the most productive.
as he was, by far, the most productive
There are a lot of guys in the league who can put up Billy G’s point totals with abut 5 min of pp time per game.
Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com
Regardless of what you pay them, Guerin wasn’t doing anything special this year. Radim Vrabata and Jim Slater were scoring at a better ES clip than Guerin.
Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com
But, we’re talking about this in terms of how the Pens get players to replace those AND fit in under the salary cap, which is why what we paid him is relevant.
Dupuis could put up Guerin’s totals if he saw the same amount of time Guerin had on Crosby’s line and on the pp. My point is that Guerin is very easy to replace.

Come on Danny, I know you’re reading this right now. It all makes perfect sense! (Sign for one year at a discount, see how it works out, and then you can decide next year if the big money is worth the perrenial championship chance.)
Not to be “that guy,” but they were worried about Gonchar asking for too much? Could’ve had him quarterbacking again for three years, $5 mill at that rate. I dunno. Just throwing it out there.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
Surprised at the amount, but maybe Shero felt he needed a big splash (especially if there are no big forward moves to make).
I know Martin was injured last year (lost his US Olympic spot because of it) and some are saying his horrible first round against the Flyers is a sign he was overrated/not worth as much, but I’d rather overpay someone so young/with so much potential vs. overpaying someone like Gonch that is looking for a deal into his mid-30s and has had increasing trouble on the injury front.
I suspect we are going to trade one of our defensive prospects like Strait, Sneep, Bortuzzo and a pick for a forward somehow. With Letang, Gogo, Orpik, ZMich, and Martin all signed for a few years, we won’t need much depth in the blue line
How much cap space do the Penguins have left? Does this mean Cooke is definitely gone? Because I liked him. Also, with Gonchar gone, I wonder who will get his ‘A.’ Orpik, probably?
Just to add some context, Martin has been the Devils’ #1 D-man over the last 3-4 years. $5M is definitely a lot, but it looks like we’re getting a very talented player in return.

He’s a solid two-way defenseman. He won’t put up as many goals as I think Pens fans would want from one of their defenseman, but he’ll definitely prevent more than his fair share down at the other end. As a player who spent all of his career up onto this point in the Devils system, you know he is capable of playing well defensively or he wouldn’t have been playing more than 25 minutes per game. He doesn’t get many points, but he’s great at starting the rush with an outlet pass up to a forward and out of his own zone.
I have a feeling he’ll see a bump in his offensive totals because he’s going to be playing with a couple of dudes named Sid and Geno…

How long before he realizes options are slim, demands are too high, and realizes with the Pens move obtaining him from Philly, they wanted him, and relents and signs for lower with them. (Is $2.2 too low for him? In his mind, I’m sure it is. And seeing other D who have signed for more today, I can’t imagine he couldn’t get more somewhere. But, with all the talk now of trades/signs of Souray and the fact that Volchenkov is still out there too, who knows what’s going on.)
