Didn’t Scott Niedermayer retire?

by rlsuth on Jul 1, 2010 11:40 AM EDT reply actions

heard about that but I thought he was just contemplating it… has it been confirmed?

I'm 21 now... I still feel 20 and I still feel way too old.

Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.

Heh.

Talk about breaking the bank. I think they’ll be regretting that deal by year 3.

By the way, Justin, what’s your source for these updates? I can’t find a good free-agent tracker anywhere – I’m currently using ESPN’s.

I’m not mad about that. Don’t waste our time saying you want to stay in Pittsburgh when 20 minutes into FA you take the first big deal thrown your way. I know he’s not going to do anything there, but still.

So long as he doesn’t undergo some career resurgence.

At 36 years old, this is definitely not happening. And I’d be hesitant about signing Volchenkov because he’s really over-valued.

Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com

by GoPens! on Jul 1, 2010 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

But, while I think Volchenkov wouldn’t be worth the money he’s asking, depending on interest, he may not command that much. (Shero has had a good recent track record with FA signings.) If no one bites on him for that much, wouldn’t he take less for a chance to play with the Pens? (Though, if they get Hamhuis before then, it becomes moot, I suppose.)

It sounds a bit high. But he faced the stiffest competition on PHX with pretty bad teammates and still kept a respectable adjusted +/-. And he’s a great shot blocker. I guess we’ll wait and see what the verdict is later.

Dupuis could put up Guerin’s totals if he saw the same amount of time Guerin had on Crosby’s line and on the pp. My point is that Guerin is very easy to replace.

Surprised at the amount, but maybe Shero felt he needed a big splash (especially if there are no big forward moves to make).

I know Martin was injured last year (lost his US Olympic spot because of it) and some are saying his horrible first round against the Flyers is a sign he was overrated/not worth as much, but I’d rather overpay someone so young/with so much potential vs. overpaying someone like Gonch that is looking for a deal into his mid-30s and has had increasing trouble on the injury front.

understood. Was meaning trade for a forward already under contract, rather than signing via FA (where we couldn’t afford to spend). obviously would need to clear another player (ie Godard, Dupuis or someone?) to get under the cap.

PLEASE GODARD. PLEASE.

Never fear, BillyG will sign for another year at the league minimum. :)

by rlsuth on Jul 1, 2010 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

How much cap space do the Penguins have left? Does this mean Cooke is definitely gone? Because I liked him. Also, with Gonchar gone, I wonder who will get his ‘A.’ Orpik, probably?

by kellyn on Jul 1, 2010 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

Cooke is already signed :)

Canada Rocks. Except for the Ottawa Senators.

Good! Like I said, I like him.

by kellyn on Jul 1, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Gotta be Brooks, I think.

by JustinM on Jul 1, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he most definitely deserves it. And he knows more English than their other alternate, who, judging by my lip reading skills, only really knows the swear words.

by kellyn on Jul 1, 2010 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s hockey. What other words does he need? :)

by rlsuth on Jul 1, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Sid only needs one of them, actually.

About 2 mil

Let's go Pens!

Just to add some context, Martin has been the Devils’ #1 D-man over the last 3-4 years. $5M is definitely a lot, but it looks like we’re getting a very talented player in return.

Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com

by GoPens! on Jul 1, 2010 2:56 PM EDT reply actions

As someone who has watched Martin for most of those three to four years, trust me, you are.

by kellyn on Jul 1, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

So you’re vouching for this guy? Cause if he screws up, it’s on you ;-)

The Pens will be back.

by PensAreYourDaddy on Jul 1, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll take my chances and vouch for the guy.

by kellyn on Jul 1, 2010 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Want to give us a scouting report?

Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com

by GoPens! on Jul 1, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s a solid two-way defenseman. He won’t put up as many goals as I think Pens fans would want from one of their defenseman, but he’ll definitely prevent more than his fair share down at the other end. As a player who spent all of his career up onto this point in the Devils system, you know he is capable of playing well defensively or he wouldn’t have been playing more than 25 minutes per game. He doesn’t get many points, but he’s great at starting the rush with an outlet pass up to a forward and out of his own zone.

by kellyn on Jul 1, 2010 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus, maybe he can tell our forwards how to get a puck past Brodeur.

Canada Rocks. Except for the Ottawa Senators.

by PopRocks on Jul 1, 2010 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Is he mancrush worthy? :)

by JustinM on Jul 1, 2010 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely. I have a girlcrush on him, even if he looks kind of like a muppet.

by kellyn on Jul 1, 2010 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Excellent. If it was just because he was hot or something, I can’t claim to care about that. :)

by JustinM on Jul 1, 2010 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a feeling he’ll see a bump in his offensive totals because he’s going to be playing with a couple of dudes named Sid and Geno…

Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com

by GoPens! on Jul 1, 2010 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Getting time on a better power play would definitely help his offensive totals increase.

by kellyn on Jul 1, 2010 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope our PP is, in fact, “a better power play” next season!

Canada Rocks. Except for the Ottawa Senators.

by PopRocks on Jul 1, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh. It’s probably better than the Devils’ power play. They decline penalties.

by kellyn on Jul 1, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

So did we, for awhile last season (and the season before when we were without Gonch).

Canada Rocks. Except for the Ottawa Senators.

by PopRocks on Jul 1, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Did he get much PP time?

by JustinM on Jul 1, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

He saw about 3:30 pp time/game with the Devils

Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com

by GoPens! on Jul 1, 2010 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, on the Devils first power play unit. He played down by the blue line. I think that’s called the point or something.

by kellyn on Jul 1, 2010 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

If you add a ‘precious’ to the comment, I’ll start to get really worried, Gollum.

by kellyn on Jul 1, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

What has it got in its pocketses?

by JustinM on Jul 1, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Paul Martin.

Canada Rocks. Except for the Ottawa Senators.

by PopRocks on Jul 1, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

He won’t put up as many goals as I think Pens fans would want from one of their defenseman

Two words, Brooks Orpik.

If Martin does the job defensively, I think he’ll be forgiven for not lighting the lamp on the other end.

The Pens will be back.

Looking at the cap room:

by OOTer on Jul 1, 2010 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

i think it means the Pens have about 3.5 under the cap
if they use 1.0 for midseason moves
that leaves 2.5, right?

yuck. i like the Ducks. Lydman, not so much.

by Diomedes7 on Jul 1, 2010 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

If that’s their choice to replace Nieds, that isn’t much going to do the job, I don’t think.

by OOTer on Jul 1, 2010 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

speaking of...

the Ducks
i hope Shero has called Selanne to say…if Anaheim’s situation doesn’t appeal to you, you can have the rest of our cap space and play w/ your choice of 87 or 71!

by Diomedes7 on Jul 1, 2010 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Would be a nice move for Selanne. haha (He’s got to have all the money he can need, right?)

by OOTer on Jul 1, 2010 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

OK, so no Ray Whitney. I’m guessing Pens still don’t have enough money for Hamhuis, so I think the rest of the day will be trying to finagle a top 6 winger.

by OOTer on Jul 1, 2010 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

I doubt we’ll see anything more from the Pens today.

Rumor: Souray possibly being traded to NJ

by JustinM on Jul 1, 2010 3:22 PM EDT reply actions

That actually doesn’t surprise me. I had a feeling Lou wasn’t pushing as hard for Martin for a reason, and a deal for Souray could be it.

by kellyn on Jul 1, 2010 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

So the overall feeling is good for our two signings? Don’t know much about them. Don’t we need to add a winger or two still, that’s what people have complained about lack of skill for our centres to play with?

by andrew21nz on Jul 1, 2010 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

All that work ...

He probably asked too much. Look he isnt signed anywhere yet.

Let's go Pens!

by nut1976 on Jul 1, 2010 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

How long before he realizes options are slim, demands are too high, and realizes with the Pens move obtaining him from Philly, they wanted him, and relents and signs for lower with them. (Is $2.2 too low for him? In his mind, I’m sure it is. And seeing other D who have signed for more today, I can’t imagine he couldn’t get more somewhere. But, with all the talk now of trades/signs of Souray and the fact that Volchenkov is still out there too, who knows what’s going on.)

Scary thing is that the Caps haven’t yet been heard from yet. They have lots of room left.

by OOTer on Jul 1, 2010 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I was wondering about the Caps, too. Maybe they’re still working on Kovalchuk.

Canada Rocks. Except for the Ottawa Senators.

by PopRocks on Jul 1, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not worried about Hamhuis and I’m definitely not worried about dishing the third rounder to talk to him. Whatever. If he doesn’t want to play in Pittsburgh, screw em.

How is Vancouver still in the Hamhuis talks? I thought they had guys to sign. Plus, they had/have TONS of D. I’m guessing some folks in Vancouver are getting jettisoned if they plan to bring aboard Hamhuis. (Unless I’ve heard wrong all day.)
