Pretty decent pay for a backup goalie, though.

Had to laugh. Biron was never a “great” goalie by any means, but I think we saw his best days in Philly. Maybe Buffalo. Up for discussion I suppose.

Ya, G, Wings, and Centers aren’t getting any love in these posts. Maybe after we sign another D man.

Well, I didn’t expect the G thread to be a hot spot, given that we aren’t going to touch this market. I’m a bit surprised about the wing threads, though.
Those don’t seem to have much movement to begin with though. Like we all have been hearing and saying, it’s a D free agency this year. I hope we land one more of these D man then I guarantee we start looking for a vet on the wing.

Over/under on how many games before Auld takes over as the Habs' starter?

That’s his third team in three years, isn’t it?

I think the same can be said of Biron. Philly, Islanders and now Rangers. At least he has a habit of staying in the division.

What do you think the odds are that Theodore and Turco are forced to take back-up jobs this season? Who’s really hurting for a goaltender right now, other than the Flyers?
I can somehow see Turco going to Philly if they can’t get Nabakov, which is looking less likely given the small amount of cap room.

Kind of a curious signing for them. Expensive for a backup who likely won’t play much, unless they’re thinking of finally backing Brodeur off a little.
Same thought I was having.

i always assumed that Nabokov and Turco were gonna be the first goalies signed… Not a bunch of journeyman backups… what a weird way to start the FA…

have no idea why… isn’t it still prudent to build your team from the goal outwards or have I fallen asleep since the Brodeur/Hasek/Roy days?

Scotty Bowman doesn't think so
Chicago and Detroit winning the cup says something about the need to have an amazing goalie. It seems like teams that win the cup have good shut down D-men. Even the Pens had good D, (top 10 if I remember correctly) in the year they won the cup. Look at the D-men on the cup winning and runner up teams since the lockout, Pronger three times, Keith and Seabrook, Lidstrom and Rafalski twice, Gonchar when he was a bit younger and Scuderi twice, Scott Neidermayer, Volchenkov and Redden, (I think he was good at one point, wasn’t he?). Out of the 10 teams, three seemed to buck the trend, the Pens twice and the Hurricanes. Seems pretty good to me.
I agree with Scotty, and so do most of the statistical analysts out there.
I’d rather have great people who make the goalie’s job easier than I would a great goalie, because that’s several million you could use elsewhere to have a proportionally much larger impact.
okay… so competent goalie + awesomeness D.
I think Flower qualifies as awesomeness and I’m getting warm fuzzy feelings inside about our D…
Is it OCtober already?
